The voice came again.
"...Help..."
Soft.
Weak.
Barely audible over the constant dripping of water.
Vespera froze.
It wasn't the growl of a monster.
It wasn't prey crying in fear.
It was... a person.
Her golden eyes narrowed as she focused on the faint pulse of life hidden somewhere beyond the tunnel ahead.
The passage grew older with every step.
Natural stone slowly gave way to carved walls.
Ancient pillars leaned at impossible angles, wrapped in roots that had forced their way through centuries-old cracks.
Symbols covered the walls.
Graceful curves unlike anything Vespera had seen before.
They weren't monster markings.
They were elven.
"Someone built this..."
The realization sent a chill through her.
This part of the dungeon had once been something else.
Not a nest.
Not a cave.
A temple.
A prison.
Another whisper drifted through the silence.
"...Is someone there...?"
Vespera followed the voice until the corridor opened into a circular chamber.
Her breath caught.
A cage of silver metal stood in the center of the room.
Dozens of glowing chains extended from its corners, each covered in intricate runes that pulsed with fading blue light.
Inside...
An elf.
Long silver hair spilled across the stone floor.
Her emerald eyes, dulled by exhaustion, opened slowly as Vespera approached.
Even weakened, she carried herself with quiet dignity.
One hand instinctively reached for a broken sword lying beside her.
When she saw Vespera's serpentine body, every trace of fatigue vanished.
She forced herself upright.
"I won't die quietly," the elf said, her voice hoarse.
"If you've come to feed..."
"...then you'll have to earn it."
Vespera stopped several paces away.
She had expected pleading.
Begging.
Instead...
Defiance.
"You think I'm here to eat you?" Vespera asked.
"Aren't you?"
The question hung in the air.
Vespera couldn't answer immediately.
Her hunger still lingered beneath the surface.
She could hear the elf's heartbeat.
Steady.
Strong despite her condition.
Part of her instincts whispered that the elf would provide an enormous amount of Essence.
Another part—the part that still remembered being Priya—refused to see her as prey.
"I don't know," Vespera admitted.
The honesty surprised them both.
The elf blinked.
"You're... different."
"So I've been told."
Silence settled between them.
For several long moments, neither moved.
Finally, the elf lowered her broken blade by a fraction.
"My name is Lirael."
The name echoed softly through the chamber.
"I'm Vespera."
"You have a name."
"I do."
"And you can speak."
"Apparently."
For the first time, confusion replaced fear in Lirael's expression.
"I've fought monsters for decades."
"They've never spoken."
Vespera glanced around the chamber.
The chains weren't ordinary restraints.
Dark energy flowed through every rune.
The magic wasn't keeping Lirael inside.
It was feeding on her.
"How long have you been here?"
"I stopped counting."
Years.
Maybe longer.
Vespera reached toward one of the glowing chains.
The instant her claws touched it—
Pain exploded through her arm.
The rune flared crimson.
The System appeared before her.

Vespera pulled her hand back.
"So even the System says no..."
Lirael laughed weakly.
"It usually does."
"You've seen these messages?"
"No."
She looked at the floating screen with surprise.
"I only guessed from your expression."
Before Vespera could reply—
The entire chamber trembled.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
One chain snapped tight with a metallic shriek.
A deep roar rolled through the corridors.
Lirael's face turned pale.
"No..."
"It found us."
Heavy footsteps echoed beyond the doorway.
Each one shook the ancient temple.
The air filled with the scent of blood and damp earth.
Something enormous approached.
The System chimed once more.

Vespera looked toward the tunnel.
Then back at the imprisoned elf.
She could leave.
The guardian would ignore her.
Lirael would die.
Or...
She could stay.
A slow smile touched Vespera's lips.
"Eight percent?"
She laughed quietly.
"I've survived worse odds already."
She coiled protectively between the chamber entrance and the silver cage.
Lirael stared at her in disbelief.
"You'll die."
"Maybe."
Vespera's golden eyes met the darkness beyond the doorway.
"But not before I make it regret coming here."
A gigantic shadow fell across the chamber entrance.
Two burning crimson eyes opened in the darkness.
The Dungeon Guardian had arrived.
