The sanctuary gates remained closed.
Darius stood atop the ancient wall, his hand resting upon the hilt of his sword.
Below him, the lone traveler waited without fear.
She neither demanded entry nor attempted to force the gates.
She simply stood in silence.
Vespera emerged from the Council Hall with Lirael at her side.
The refugees watched anxiously from behind the battlements.
The memory of the recent siege was still fresh.
"Is she alone?" Vespera asked.
Darius nodded.
"I've searched the surrounding valley."
"No hidden soldiers."
"No assassins."
"Only her."
The System appeared.

"Open the outer gate," Vespera ordered.
"But leave the inner gate sealed."
The massive doors groaned open just enough for one person to enter the outer courtyard.
The traveler stepped forward calmly.
She lowered her hood.
She appeared no older than her mid-twenties.
Long chestnut hair framed a composed face, while intelligent amber eyes studied every detail of the sanctuary.
She noticed the goblin children peeking from behind a fountain.
The kobolds repairing damaged walls.
The ogres carrying supplies.
Confusion flickered across her face.
"This..."
She whispered almost to herself.
"...isn't what I expected."
"My name is Sister Seraphine."
She bowed respectfully.
"I serve the Holy Empire."
Lirael immediately tensed.
"The Empire doesn't send priests without soldiers."
Seraphine gave a weary smile.
"Normally."
"But I came against orders."
That caught everyone's attention.
Vespera folded her arms.
"You marched an army against us."
"You called us monsters."
"So why are you here?"
Seraphine reached into her satchel slowly.
Darius never loosened his grip on his sword.
Instead of a weapon...
She produced a weathered journal.
Its leather cover was cracked with age.
"I found this beneath the Grand Cathedral."
"It was hidden behind a collapsed wall."
She held it carefully.
"It shouldn't exist."
Vespera accepted the journal cautiously.
The moment her fingers touched it—
The System chimed.

"I couldn't read most of it," Seraphine admitted.
"But one passage survived."
She looked directly at Vespera.
"It says..."
She took a slow breath.
'The day history calls the Abyss our enemy... remember that we were the ones who broke the peace.'
Silence consumed the courtyard.
Even Darius closed his eyes.
As though hearing words he had waited centuries to hear again.
"You believe it?" Vespera asked.
"I don't know."
Seraphine answered honestly.
"My entire life I was taught monsters are born evil."
She glanced around the sanctuary.
"But I've been here less than five minutes."
"I've seen frightened children."
"Families rebuilding homes."
"And a queen who accepted refugees."
Her voice softened.
"None of that matches what I was taught."
Lirael stepped forward cautiously.
"Then why doesn't your Empire question its own history?"
Seraphine looked down.
"Because history is written by those who survive."
"And questioning it is considered heresy."
The Sanctuary Core suddenly pulsed.
The old journal began glowing.
Ancient letters appeared across its pages.
Only Vespera could read them.
The first line sent a chill through her body.
To the One Who Bears Two Souls...
Her heartbeat quickened.
Priya.
The journal knew.
Before she could continue reading—
The sanctuary bells rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
A scout goblin raced into the courtyard, breathing hard.
"My Queen!"
"The western watchtower!"
"We've spotted smoke!"
Darius climbed the wall in a single leap.
His expression darkened.
"It isn't smoke."
He pointed toward the distant crystal forest.
Black mist rolled between the trees like a living tide.
Everything it touched withered.
The grass turned gray.
Crystal flowers crumbled into dust.
Animals fled in panic.
The Devourer's corruption was spreading.
The System flashed crimson.

Seraphine stared toward the approaching darkness.
Her face lost all color.
"That's..."
"It reached this far already?"
"You've seen it before?" Vespera asked.
The priestess nodded slowly.
"There was a village."
"North of the Empire."
"They blamed monsters."
"But..."
She swallowed.
"...there weren't any monsters left."
"Only that black mist."
Vespera closed the journal.
She looked at the sanctuary behind her.
Then toward the approaching corruption.
Finally, she turned to Seraphine.
"If you're telling the truth..."
"Then help us stop it."
The priestess hesitated only a moment.
Then she knelt.
"I don't know if my Empire would call this treason..."
"...but I'll help."
A new notification appeared.

Far beyond the sanctuary...
Within the heart of the spreading black mist...

It had found what it was searching for.
Not the sanctuary.
Not Vespera.
The ancient journal.
