The celebrations lasted long into the night.
For the first time in centuries, the halls of the Abyssal Nest echoed with laughter instead of battle cries.
Orcs challenged minotaurs to drinking contests.
Goblin children climbed onto the broad shoulders of Stonehide warriors without fear.
Sylvana's enchanted flowers decorated every table, filling the ancient hall with the scent of spring.
Vespera watched it all from the royal balcony.
In her human form.
It had become the form she wore most often within the Nest.
Not because she wished to hide what she was...
But because it reminded everyone—including herself—that a queen's greatest strength wasn't always found in claws or venom.
A familiar voice interrupted her thoughts.
"You've built something unusual."
It was Darius.
The Black Knight stood beside her, his arms folded.
"Unusual?"
He nodded.
"I've served three Abyss Sovereigns."
"They inspired obedience."
"They inspired fear."
He looked down at the courtyard below.
"You inspire hope."
Vespera smiled faintly.
"I hope that's enough."
Darius was silent for several moments.
"It won't be."
She looked at him.
"You'll need strength as well."
The next morning, the Council Hall buzzed with activity.
Lirael unrolled another ancient map recovered from the Royal Archive.
"Our next potential allies live here."
She pointed toward a jagged mountain range where cliffs disappeared into darkness.
"The Ashwing Harpies."
Kragga groaned.
"They're impossible."
Gorvak crossed his arms.
"They've attacked every caravan we've sent through their skies."
Seraphine frowned.
"Then why approach them?"
Lirael answered quietly.
"Because they control every major air route in the western Abyss."
Darius nodded.
"If war comes..."
"We'll need eyes in the sky."
The System appeared.

By midday, the three companions had begun climbing the Skyfang Cliffs.
The path narrowed with every step.
Far below, clouds drifted through the deep chasms of the Abyss.
Suddenly...
A shadow swept overhead.
Then another.
Feathers drifted onto the mountain trail.
Kragga instinctively reached for her axe.
"They're watching."
"I know," Vespera replied.
She deliberately kept her hands away from her weapons.
"I'm not here to start a fight."
A sharp whistle echoed through the cliffs.
Dozens of winged figures descended from above.
Each carried a spear crafted from polished bone.
Their leader landed gracefully upon a rocky outcrop.
Her wings were black tipped with crimson.
A circlet of silver feathers rested upon her brow.
The System activated.

Kaelyra folded her wings.
"So..."
"The Queen who unites monsters."
Her golden eyes settled on Vespera.
"I expected something larger."
Kragga laughed loudly.
"Everyone says that."
Even several harpies chuckled.
The tension eased slightly.
Kaelyra became serious.
"We know why you've come."
"You seek another alliance."
"I do."
The harpy queen shook her head.
"Then you've climbed the wrong mountain."
"Our answer is no."
"Why?" Vespera asked.
Kaelyra looked toward the endless sky.
"Because we cannot leave."
She spread one wing.
Several feathers were stained black.
Not naturally.
Corruption.
"The Devourer's Blight has reached our nesting cliffs."
"Our young cannot fly through infected winds."
"Our hunters disappear."
"Our eggs no longer hatch."
She lowered her gaze.
"We're dying."
Before anyone could answer...
A deafening screech split the sky.
Every harpy looked upward.
The clouds churned.
Something enormous burst through them.
It resembled a giant bird.
Its feathers had rotted into black tendrils.
Six crimson eyes burned beneath a twisted crown of bone.
The System flashed crimson.

The monster dove.
Harpies scattered in every direction.
Its talons tore through the cliffs, sending boulders crashing into the abyss.
A nest perched near the cliff's edge began to crumble.
Inside...
Three hatchlings cried in terror.
Kaelyra lunged toward them.
Too far.
Too slow.
Vespera didn't hesitate.
Dark mist enveloped her.
For an instant, she became her Abyssal form, using the immense strength of her serpentine body to launch herself toward the collapsing cliff.
Then, in midair—
She shifted back into her human form.
Her lighter body twisted gracefully through the falling debris.
She caught the nest against her chest moments before it plunged into the abyss.
The hatchlings chirped fearfully.
"It's alright," Vespera whispered.
"I've got you."
She landed hard upon a lower ledge, protecting the nest with her own body.
Above her, Kaelyra stared in disbelief.
"You..."
"You saved them."
Vespera smiled.
"They're your future."
"They deserve one."
Far overhead, the Blight Roc turned.
Its crimson eyes locked onto the woman holding the nest.
Then it screamed.
The battle for the skies had only just begun.
