The Sanctuary Core pulsed once.
Then again.
Deep beneath the Council Hall, ancient gears awakened after centuries of silence.
Stone grated against stone.
A circular section of the floor slowly descended, revealing a staircase spiraling into darkness.
Cold air drifted upward.
It carried the scent of old parchment, crystal dust... and forgotten history.
Vespera looked toward Darius.
"You knew this was here."
The Black Knight inclined his head.
"I suspected."
"The Royal Archive was said to preserve the memories of every Abyss Sovereign."
"And no one ever entered?"
"No heir ever returned."
Silence settled over the chamber.
Those words carried more weight than any blade.
"I'll go," Vespera said.
"I'm coming too," Lirael replied immediately.
Darius rested a hand on the hilt of his sword.
"I will guard the entrance."
"If these records survived this long..."
"They are worth protecting."
The elderly ogre stepped forward.
"My Queen."
"The sanctuary is safe."
"We'll keep watch."
Vespera smiled.
"Then don't call me 'Your Majesty' while I'm gone."
The old ogre chuckled.
"I'll try."
The staircase seemed endless.
Crystal lanterns embedded in the walls awakened one by one as Vespera descended.
Their pale violet glow illuminated murals unlike any she had seen before.
Not battles.
Not conquest.
Families.
Children learning.
Scholars debating.
Monsters cultivating fields beside humans and elves.
The Abyss had not always been a realm of fear.
Someone had changed its story.
At the bottom stood a pair of obsidian doors.
No handles.
No lock.
Only a single inscription.
Knowledge belongs only to those willing to bear its weight.
Vespera placed the First Royal Key into a shallow indentation at the center.
A soft click echoed.
The doors opened.
The Royal Archive stretched farther than the eye could see.
Towering shelves reached into darkness.
Floating crystals drifted silently between them.
Thousands of books remained untouched by dust or decay.
It felt...
Alive.
The System appeared.

Lirael's eyes widened.
"This..."
"...is impossible."
She ran her fingers along a nearby shelf.
"Some of these books disappeared from history over a thousand years ago."
As Vespera stepped deeper into the archive, a small crystal orb floated toward her.
It circled her once.
Then projected a translucent figure into the air.
A woman.
Tall.
Elegant.
Her long silver hair flowed almost to the floor.
A serpent-shaped crown rested upon her brow.
She smiled gently.
"Welcome home."
Vespera froze.
"Who are you?"
"I am not she."
"I am only an echo."
"The final memory left behind by the First Abyss Queen."
Lirael instinctively bowed.
The projection raised a hand.
"There is no need."
"I possess neither life... nor authority."
She turned to Vespera.
"You have inherited a kingdom."
"But not its wisdom."
"That..."
"...must be earned."
The projection waved her hand.
The shelves around them shifted.
One book slowly floated into Vespera's waiting hands.
Its cover bore no title.
Only a coiled serpent surrounding a star.
The moment she opened it—
The world vanished.
She stood beneath an endless night sky.
Not alone.
A bustling city surrounded her.
Humans bargained in open markets.
Elves played music in crystal gardens.
Monster children chased one another through crowded streets.
No fear.
No hatred.
Only life.
A voice spoke beside her.
"This..."
"...was the Abyss."
Vespera turned.
The First Queen stood there in the flesh—or so the vision made it seem.
"They called us monsters."
"We called ourselves guardians."
"What happened?"
The Queen's smile faded.
"They became afraid."
"Fear is patient."
"It whispers."
"It divides."
"And eventually..."
"...it rewrites history."
The city around them began to burn.
The laughter vanished.
Screams replaced it.
Vespera reached forward instinctively.
But the vision dissolved.
She found herself back inside the archive.
Her breathing was uneven.
Tears traced silent paths down her cheeks.
Lirael gently touched her shoulder.
"What did you see?"
"A world..."
"...that should have survived."
The projection's expression grew solemn.
"There is little time."
"The Devourer is only one symptom."
"The true disease still sleeps."
She looked directly into Vespera's eyes.
"If you seek answers..."
"You must find the remaining Royal Keys."
"They protect more than treasure."
"They protect the truth."
The projection slowly began to fade.
"Wait!"
Vespera stepped forward.
"Why me?"
"Why was I chosen?"
The projection smiled sadly.
"That answer..."
"...belongs to Priya."
With those final words, she disappeared.
The archive trembled.
Not from within.
From above.
The Sanctuary Sense skill activated on its own.
Vespera's awareness surged across the sanctuary.
Someone had crossed the outer boundary.
Fast.
Alone.
Not a monster.
Not an imperial soldier.
The System flashed crimson.

Vespera snapped the ancient book shut.
"Lirael."
"We're going back."
The two sprinted toward the staircase.
Far above...
A lone hooded traveler stood before the sanctuary gates.
She carried no banner.
No visible weapon.
Only a staff carved from white wood.
When Darius appeared atop the wall, the stranger lowered her hood.
Golden eyes met his.
"I've come," she said calmly,
"...to speak with the Abyss Empress."
Behind her, hidden beneath the folds of her cloak, a pendant bearing the crest of the Holy Empire caught the crystal light.
