- Chapter 1: Officer Robson
Before Qimo Fortress, the city gates opened. The ones leading the way were, once again, the Extraordinary Knights.
"For the King! For Frank!"
Shouting their slogan, a host of noble Cavalry streamed out of the fortress and quickly charged toward the retreating Beastman Army.
Following them was the Infantry corps, which, despite appearing chaotic, was actually moving with disciplined order.
...
Robson was at the very front, leading the charge. ’This is exactly the experience I need!’
Huang Na followed close by, periodically launching a pair of fireballs at the surrounding Gnolls.
The Gnolls at the rear had intended to put up a fight, but the Extraordinary Knights simply charged right through them.
Had they been Bloodthirsty Jackal Wolfmen, they might have been able to put up some resistance. But ordinary Gnolls like these, daring to stand against the Extraordinary Corps?
Forget the Extraordinary Corps; they couldn’t even stop a charge from regular Heavy Cavalry.
Qimo Fortress was built on high ground to begin with, and now Robson’s army was fighting downhill, giving them every possible advantage.
The Frank Cavalry, in particular, charged forward relentlessly, as if their lives meant nothing.
The Beastman Army had already been attempting an orderly retreat. But now, seeing the enemy pursuing them with such ferocity, they dropped all pretenses, threw down their weapons, and simply ran for their lives, wishing they could sprout two more legs.
...
"The humans are coming! Run!"
"Wait for me! Chieftain! Wait... urk..."
Robson led a contingent of Extraordinary Cavalry, charging at the very front. The entire Beastman Corps was in a state of collapse, completely unable to organize an effective counterattack.
Furthermore, the army Robson led would be considered an elite force even on the main battlefront.
With a flourish of his lance, he skewered several Beastmen, but the experience he gained was pitifully small.
’This won’t do! I need to find some Extraordinary Beastmen!’
Robson frowned. If he couldn’t level up soon, he might not get another chance in a battle of this scale.
’So many Magic Crystals!’
Robson’s eyes widened. In the distance, he saw a group of figures carrying crates of Magic Crystals, attempting to flee!
Magic Crystals contained high-purity Magic Power and were incredibly heavy. Without a doubt, anyone who could run while carrying them had to be an Extraordinary-level warrior at the very least.
"Where do you think you’re going!" Robson roared, unleashing his Silver Sixth Tier battle aura and spurring his warhorse straight ahead.
Along the way, Robson put his masterful knightly skills to use, cutting through enemies with ease, his path completely unobstructed.
At first, a few foolhardy individuals charged forward to meet him in battle.
Gradually, everyone realized this human Knight was a little too ferocious, and he seemed to be charging single-mindedly in one direction.
The Kobolds and Foxmen who caught on simply gave up, clearing a path to let the human charge through as he pleased.
This, however, made things difficult for the fleeing Marin. All of a sudden, it was as if everyone was desperately trying to distance themselves from his group. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
"What do we do? That human seems really strong!"
"General, what should we do?"
"Damn it! We’re dead either way! Let’s give these humans a fight!"
At last, the Foxmen, who had been holding back for so long, could take it no more. They set down the Magic Crystals and Marin, drew their weapons, and prepared to fight the approaching human to the death.
"That’s right! If we win, we save our lives! If we lose... well, death is the worst that can happen!"
"Damn it! Let’s fight!"
Having steeled their resolve, the Foxmen no longer shrank back. Instead, they raised their blades and charged forward.
"Human! Die!"
...
"[Ding! You have successfully slain a Bronze Third Tier of the Snow Mountain Fox Clan. +30 experience.]"
"[Ding! You have successfully slain a Bronze Second Tier of the Snow Mountain Fox Clan. +20 experience.]"
"[Ding! Your experience has reached the maximum. You will now level up...]"
Robson cleared out the surrounding Extraordinary Foxmen, even taking a moment to deliver a finishing blow to a half-dead one on the ground.
Looking around, he saw that a vacuum had formed around him; not a single Beastman dared to approach.
’It’s finally full!’
’After all this time in this world, I’ve finally reached this point!’
Even with Robson’s usually steady heart, he couldn’t help but feel a stir of emotion.
In an instant, Robson felt a tremendous change sweep over his body.
The very first sensation was, unexpectedly, pain!
An indescribable, agonizing pain assaulted Robson’s Life Seed, a feeling so intense it was almost suffocating.
Looking at his surroundings, Robson realized he was in a difficult situation.
The Beast Race Soldiers didn’t dare charge him now, but that was purely due to the power Robson had displayed earlier.
Robson had no doubt that the moment he showed the slightest weakness, they would rush him like Jackal Wolves, intent on tearing him to shreds.
’Damn it, nobody told me advancing to the Gold Tier would be this painful!’
This was the price of his family’s weak foundation. In the entire Odogin Family, combining the main and branch lines, there were barely a few at the Silver Tier, let alone the Gold Tier.
With no one at the Golden Tier, there was naturally no related knowledge passed down.
"Robson! What’s wrong?" asked Huang Na, who, in her canary form, was perched on Robson’s shoulder.
’That’s right! I still have Huang Na!’ Robson breathed a sigh of relief. Although he was somewhat incapacitated, Huang Na was more than enough to intimidate those Gnolls.
"Huang Na, revert to your true form..."
"Okay!"
Without a moment’s hesitation, Huang Na instantly transformed into her true form: a magnificent fire turkey.
While a bit comical, the method was undeniably effective. The Beastmen who had seen Robson’s stillness and were becoming eager to attack now grew wary once more.
With Huang Na backing him up, Robson let out a long sigh of relief. However, the intense pain within his body continued unabated.
"Sir! What are you doing? Hurry up and get the Mole Energy out of your body! Quickly! The Duo’an Seedling is about to sprout!"
Robson froze. ’Where did that voice come from?’
’What is Mole Energy?’ Robson searched his memories. It seemed to be an ancient elven term; he recalled hearing it from Ed before.
’What is this so-called energy? What’s a Life Tree Seedling?’
"Listen to me! Guide it! Guide your qi, can you feel it?"
"The qi emanating from your Duo’an... from your Life Seed!"
"Guide it! Let it flow through your bones and vessels!"
’What the hell? Why is he talking about qi now?’
Robson only understood one term from the mysterious voice: Life Seed.
’The qi from the Life Seed? Is he talking about my battle aura?’
"Hurry! If you don’t guide it soon, it will be reabsorbed by your Life Seed, and then your Life Seed will explode!"
Sure enough, Robson could vaguely feel something flowing within him. Not daring to hesitate, he sank into a meditative state, even with his eyes wide open.
But Robson had never felt this before and had no idea how to guide it.
Slowly, Robson felt a current of qi inside him begin to assault his Dantian, causing immense pain.
"This is bad!"
Just in the nick of time, a white, fluorescent glow suddenly emanated from Robson’s body.
’The Mount & Blade System!’ Robson stared at the glow emanating from his body. During his previous promotions, these same specks of light had appeared. It was because of them that he had never bothered to learn the specifics of battle aura.
Of course, this was also due to how jealously knowledge was guarded in this world, as well as the fact that Robson had been too preoccupied to investigate ever since the war began.
"What is this? This energy feels so familiar!"
It was that voice again, speaking directly into Robson’s ear, which was a hair-raising experience.
Gradually, as the fluorescent light grew brighter, the roiling energy within Robson began to calm down, even starting to proactively nourish his entire body.
Robson also entered a strange state, something akin to a Mage’s ability of introspection.
’Could the ridiculous rumors be true? Is the essence of a Golden Tier warrior just... a physical Mage?’
Robson couldn’t help but think of those parody rumors.
"What’s going on? Why isn’t it over? This shouldn’t be happening... how is there this much energy?"
It was that voice again, but Robson had no time to heed it. He felt as if every channel in his body had been cleared, an indescribably pleasant sensation.
It was like waking up at the perfect moment, opening the curtains to the first rays of morning sun, and the feeling of utter, bone-deep satisfaction after a long, luxurious stretch.
As the energy continued to spread through his body, Robson felt an unprecedented sense of clarity and flow, from head to toe.
An unknown amount of time passed—so long that even Robson felt it was dragging on. When the release of energy finally reached its peak, a white aura suddenly radiated from his entire body.
From the perspective of his introspection, Robson saw that his Life Seed had transformed into a small, white seedling.
"Huh?" Huang Na turned her head. Looking at the white seedling, she felt a strange sense of intimacy.
After scanning the surroundings and confirming there were no threatening enemies nearby, Huang Na changed back into a canary and landed on Robson’s shoulder.
Feeling the energy radiating from Robson, Huang Na suddenly felt herself growing drowsy.
"He succeeded? How in the world did he succeed?"
