- Chapter 1: Officer Robson
"What?" Odin was startled. He put down the cloth he was using to wipe his silver spear and tucked it into his pouch.
He set the silver spear aside and stood up. His body was a little numb from squatting for so long.
"Do you feel like something’s wrong?" Hans asked, staring ahead. The moonlight was currently obscured by clouds, making it difficult to see any movement below.
Odin’s expression turned serious as well. Although his friend was usually unreliable, his intuition was always uncannily accurate.
Soon, the clouds were parted by the moonlight, and its yellow glow once again illuminated the land.
"Something’s moving!" Odin spotted a gray shape.
No! It was a lot of gray! A dense, sprawling mass! Specks everywhere!
An attack!
"Enemy attack! Enemies!" Odin shouted.
"Quick! Go ring the bell! Tell John the horn blower! No, we should tell the officer!" Hans blurted out a stream of words, but was ultimately unsure what to do.
"You go report to the officer! I’ll wake up the resting brothers!"
...
"Enemy attack! Enemy attack!"
"The Beastmen are here! Get up!"
"Still sleeping?! Get up! The Beastmen are here to take your head!"
Gradually, news of the attack spread across the entire fortress wall. Torches flared to life one by one. The Third Regiment, stationed here, poured out from the watchtowers and the barracks below, rushing to the top of the wall.
Before long, the sound of horns echoed throughout the fortress, one after another.
The clang of iron armor gradually became audible. At the city gate, the First Regiment had begun to assemble, and the fifth-tier Archers were gathering to head for the walls.
"Hurry! Pick up the pace! Where are the crossbows? Go distribute them, quickly."
"Quick, go notify the Priest Corps to prepare the Divine Water!"
"You, go report to the Viscount!"
Bo Yang was on the wall, commanding a group of Soldiers. Having been through several wars, Bo Yang was no longer the clueless Knight he had been at the start.
Facing the enemy assault, Bo Yang’s methodical and proper command already gave him the air of a general.
Turalyon, Commander of the Third Regiment, stood to the side, observing Bo Yang’s orders.
Turalyon had been recommended by Viscount Leo and accepted by Robson to serve as a military Commander under him.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three deafening booms came from the distance.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Immediately after, the fortress walls began to feel a slight tremor.
...
"Attack!"
"They missed! You bunch of idiots!" Marin stomped his feet in anger as he watched the commotion on the enemy’s wall.
Marin had naturally heard the horns from within the enemy’s fortress. Since they had been discovered, Marin dropped the pretense and directly ordered the attack.
Everything had been going smoothly, but the performance of his own Magic Crystal Cannon Team was giving him a serious headache.
They were clearly aiming for the gate, but every shot flew towards the wall instead, and one didn’t even reach the wall at all.
Moreover, the enemy’s wall didn’t seem to be too badly damaged.
"Well, my lord, it can’t be helped. The Empire doesn’t have any high-concentration Magic Ore. These Magic Crystal Cannons..."
"I don’t need your excuses! Just keep attacking!"
Marin sighed. He was, of course, aware of the Beastman Empire’s situation. He figured these were probably the best artillerymen Prince Kase could provide.
"Hahaha! What is this thing? Are they setting off fireworks?"
"I told you, if you followed me to the human side, then..."
Marin snapped shut the small box hanging in front of him, and the world around him instantly became much quieter.
"Have the Foxman troops follow!" Marin ordered his adjutant.
...
At this moment, at the very front, the Third Regiment and the Kobolds had already begun to clash.
The Dogman Chief Jones was currently charging at the very front, carrying his warhammer and shouldering a siege ladder.
This was the Kobold way of war. For most races, population was everything, especially for a race like the Kobolds, whose own Extraordinary combatants were not strong and who possessed a high degree of collectivism.
In Kobold wars, the chieftain would mostly charge at the very front to prevent excessive casualties among his tribesmen.
But at this moment, Jones felt a rare sense of fatigue. Even with his Bronze Second Tier body, he was still worn out after so many days.
Ever since passing through the forest fire zone a few days ago, they had barely rested.
First, they were told to pack up because a fire was about to sweep through. Then, they were told allied forces were surrounded and to rush to the rescue.
Finally, yesterday, they were setting up camp, and not long after they had lain down, the higher-ups started ordering them to attack the fortress.
Up to this point, Jones hadn’t even had a few sips of water.
Licking his somewhat pale lips, Jones propped his siege ladder against the enemy’s wall.
His Kobold kinsmen below were brandishing wooden clubs, clamoring to charge up. However, seeing their weakened state one by one, they were probably exhausted as well.
’It would be great to receive the Beast God’s blessing right now,’ Jones thought. But that was impossible. The Beastman Empire’s Potions were not infinite, and for grunts like them, they almost never saw such precious things.
Jones grabbed his iron saber and began to climb. The one thing that made him slightly happy was that the enemy hadn’t pushed the ladder down.
...
Meanwhile, inside Qimo Fortress, Ais, who had come to deliver the message, bounded up the stairs and walked toward Robson’s bedroom, only to be stopped by the guards standing watch outside.
These guards were mainly responsible for Robson’s daily life. It was a job that should have been done by maids, but unfortunately, Robson hadn’t brought any with him. Not just anyone could be trusted to be by his side at all times.
"Adjutant Ais? What are you doing here?"
Ais looked at the guard and handed over his sword, which the guard accepted.
"A message... I’m here... with a message. Enemy attack! Did you know?" Adjutant Ais said breathlessly. He was, after all, only a mortal.
The guard took the sword and opened the door. If it had been anyone else, the guard would have certainly had to ask for permission himself, but Adjutant Ais was an even closer "confidant" than they were.
"My lord, my lord, enemy attack! En... you’re awake." Ais stepped into the room, about to wake Robson, but saw that Robson had already woken up at some point and was at the window, watching the commotion outside.
The highest point in all of Qimo Fortress, aside from the watchtower, was the Commander-in-Chief’s room. Further up was Master Kosen’s room, which was the Mage Tower of Qimo Fortress.
Robson had been awake for a while. He always left the system notification sounds on when he slept, so he could be aware of the situation at the front line at any moment.
"Ais, are the three Magic Crystal Cannon Teams awake?" Robson asked.
"Not yet. Or perhaps they are. I came to report the news at the first opportunity." Seeing Robson’s calm demeanor, Ais found that, for some reason, his own agitated heart began to calm down as well.
"Good. Send someone to wake them up at once. Tell them to get ready. They’ll probably be spending the next two days and nights on the wall."
"By the way, has the First Regiment been deployed?" Robson asked.
"The First Regiment? Knight Boyang has already ordered them to the front line. The situation now might be..."
Ais didn’t get to finish before Robson cut him off.
"Have them stand by on the wall and hunt down any enemies who get up there.
Send up the Second Regiment. The Fourth is on reserve," Robson commanded.
According to the information Robson had pulled from his panel, the opposition was just a bunch of weaklings. The enemies he was seeing the most of right now were Dogman Tribesmen.
’What kind of army is this? How is this any different from them just coming here to die?’
’These giant bags of experience are perfect for grinding levels for my other two legions. As for the Fourth Regiment...’
’We’ll see. If there’s a share for them, Lord Robson certainly won’t hold them back, but for now, my own people come first.’
Ais didn’t quite understand, but since his lord had spoken, he didn’t dwell on it.
"Yes, my lord."
"Also, go wake up Emil Knight and Sir Leo and have them get ready. Notify Claude to assemble the Cavalry Team. They’re not to attack; have them rest at the First Regiment’s camp," Robson commanded.
As a Silver-tier Extraordinary, Robson’s eyesight was naturally excellent. What’s more, he was also a third-level Mage Apprentice with a bonus to his Spiritual Domain, so he could see the scene outside the city clearly.
’The enemy even brought out Magic Crystal Cannons?’
’Magic Crystal Cannons... what a rare sight...’
