- Chapter 1: Officer Robson
Scenes like this were playing out all along the fortress walls.
Facing the endless stream of enemies, Robson already had a system of his own. Combined with the soldiers he had previously dispatched to the various regiments, everyone was well-practiced.
The weaker Kobolds couldn’t get past the defense line of the Third Regiment’s soldiers. Even if a few luckily slipped through, they would face the First Regiment’s soldiers, who were on standby on the walls.
These soldiers of the First Regiment were truly well-rested and had conserved their strength. They had rested for who knows how long and were no match for the exhausted Kobolds.
The seemingly endless Kobolds were slowly but surely being converted into a continuous stream of experience points in Robson’s ears.
The one who felt this most keenly was Marin.
Marin was a Mage, not to mention that inside the box-shaped pendant on his chest, there was an old monster of unknown power.
Although Marin’s Spiritual Power couldn’t envelop Qimo Fortress, the soul within his pendant knew everything crystal clear.
"I told you long ago, humans... are invincible."
"Look at these Kobolds! They can’t even get onto the walls."
"Why not surrender with me? Surrender to the humans, and a bright future awaits!"
Marin couldn’t help but shut the box again.
"Haven’t they reached the top of the walls yet? How long has it been?" Marin asked his adjutant, his face dark.
He was leading a night raid; the enemy’s preparations should have been insufficient. If he couldn’t take them down like this, his surprise attack would likely be a complete failure by the time the enemy fully reacted.
And at that point, who knew what methods the furious Prince Kase would use to deal with him.
"Well... perhaps we need the Magic Crystal Cannons to breach the walls..." the adjutant said cautiously.
"Rely on those Magic Crystal Cannons?" Marin snorted coldly.
Since the battle began, those three Magic Crystal Cannons hadn’t managed to hit a single thing. That would be one thing, but a moment ago, one of them had a catastrophic failure, blowing up and taking the surrounding Beastmen with it.
Marin even suspected that the Magic Crystal Cannons had killed fewer enemies than the number of allies they had just taken out with that explosion.
Unfortunately, the enemy’s walls were too sturdy...
"Well... the Gray Dwarves say they need to get closer. That might improve their accuracy," the adjutant said.
"Then let them move up. And have our own troops advance as well. Send out the Foxman Archers and those Gnolls!" Marin ordered.
"As you command, my lord."
...
At this moment, Robson stood atop the gatehouse, watching the endless stream of enemies and listening to the sound in his ears, feeling utterly delighted.
"My lord, the Second Regiment has arrived at the base of the walls. Viscount Leo and Knight Emil are already on the walls, and the Magic Crystal Cannon Team is in position. Also, Claude wishes to see you," Knight Boyang reported.
Robson nodded.
"Have the Second Regiment come up. The Third and Second Regiments will defend together; you divide the zones. Have the members of the Knight Order and the nobles of Qimo Fortress await orders," Robson commanded.
"Oh, right," Bo Yang said.
Seeing Bo Yang still standing in place, Robson asked, "Is there something else?"
"Claude, he said..."
Before Bo Yang could finish, Robson cut him off.
"Tell him to wait for orders. When it’s time to attack, I will give the command," Robson said, waving his hand dismissively.
Robson could guess what that war-maniac Claude wanted without even thinking.
"As you command, my lord." Bo Yang accepted the order and left.
...
Coming down from the gatehouse, Claude greeted him with a face full of anticipation.
"So? What’s the word? When does our Knight Team attack?" Claude asked excitedly.
Bo Yang stammered.
"He didn’t say. My lord said he’ll let you know when it’s time to move out."
"Ah?!" Claude’s anticipation instantly vanished, replaced by a deep sense of disappointment.
"Arrows! Arrows!"
"Enemy Archers!"
Suddenly, Claude grew excited again, pointing behind Bo Yang.
Bo Yang froze. He turned to look and saw the sky filled with a dense volley of arrows, momentarily stunning him.
"Shields! Shields!"
"Those without shields, get behind the battlements!"
’They’re shooting like this?’ Bo Yang was in disbelief. The Kobolds were still attacking the city.
In an instant, several thousand arrows flew over. A volley of this scale didn’t need any accuracy; as long as there were enemies, it would find its mark.
Fortunately, Robson had long ago assigned those veterans to serve as low-ranking Officers in the Second and Third Regiments. Now, it seemed, that had been the right decision.
Trained by the system panel, the reaction speed of those veterans was exceptionally fast.
Whether with shields or by using the crenellations, they quickly found the best way to respond. Furthermore, this was the enemy’s first volley, so their aim was poor, and not many arrows hit their targets.
Even for those that did hit, the soldiers had leather armor. This wave of arrows didn’t end up causing many casualties.
The humans suffered few casualties, but the Kobolds were a miserable sight. Since many of them were unprepared, this volley of arrows cleared out a wave of the Kobolds who were swarming the walls like ants.
Even the Kobolds’ assault slowed down. They weren’t fools, and they didn’t want to throw their lives away for nothing.
...
The enemy’s move not only startled Bo Yang, but in truth, Robson wasn’t feeling too great about it either.
By now, Robson had almost developed a conditioned mindset when fighting Beastmen.
In the past, although these Beastmen had Archers, their standard for success was simply being able to hit the general area of a person’s position.
Robson had almost forgotten that the Beastman Empire was all about diversity; it had all sorts of bizarre races.
He hadn’t encountered a race skilled in archery before, but that was only because he hadn’t run into one yet. Now that he had, like this Foxman Tribe before him, he was a bit stunned.
There were also some Centaurs who were very good at archery, but they had basically all been drawn to the central front.
"Hiss..."
Even though he was used to the scenes of war, Robson was still thoroughly shocked by this volley of arrows.
"Someone! Get Bo Yang in here!"
After coming to his senses, Robson couldn’t help but feel a surge of anger.
Although that last volley of arrows didn’t have many hits, you couldn’t argue with sheer numbers!
His entire panel had been a pleasing shade of green, but now a bunch of red names had suddenly popped up. Naturally, Robson’s mood soured.
’And even setting aside my, Lord Robson’s, soldiers... aren’t Kobold lives still lives?’
Watching the assault on the walls suddenly diminish, Robson felt a pang in his heart. That was all his, Lord Robson’s, experience! 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
’These guys actually dare to slaughter their own comrades! It’s too much! The benevolent Lord Robson can’t bear to see such a thing!’
"My lord, you called for me?" Bo Yang had only just left, but now he was back.
"Tell the three Magic Crystal Cannon Teams! Now! Watch for my cannon’s impact point! Don’t spare the Magic Crystals, open fire! Just hit the area around my shot!" Robson said fiercely.
"Yes, my lord," Bo Yang said.
Robson followed the direction of the arrows with his eyes and spotted the enemy’s Archer formation. He then descended from the gatehouse and hurried toward his own Magic Crystal Cannon Platform.
