Yan Jiji was of Birth to a family of builders; his ancestors had all made their living in construction.

It was said that Yan Jiji’s grandfather died in a collapse while constructing the Wei Imperial Mausoleum.

Yan Jiji’s father, in turn, had participated in the construction of the Imperial Palace.
