He took note of Scarface Liu’s firm stance.

’This man is someone worth getting close to. When it counts, he really comes through.’

As they were being rebuffed, rumors began to circulate in the Court.

Was the son of Zheng Haoran, Marquis Zhonglie, the Richest Person Zheng Xiu, truly so principled and loyal?

Scarface Liu was long accustomed to Master Zheng’s "sleepy" disposition. Wasting no words, he got straight to the point. "His Highness! His Highness has come in person! He wants to see you!"

Zheng Xiu had been in the Ghostly Realm, locked in a fierce, back-and-forth sword fight with Wang Cangyun. Hearing the voice outside, he promptly stuck his neck out to get himself killed, then opened his eyes, his interest piqued.

"Oh? Which Prince?"

"It’s the Second Prince! He’s prepared a grand banquet upstairs and is waiting for you to come out. He said there’s... something important to discuss!"

Zheng Xiu smiled, his eyes narrowing meaningfully. "So, it’s the Second Prince!"

Scarface Liu moved to unlock the cell door.

But Zheng Xiu didn’t even make a move to get up from his Grandmaster’s Chair. He simply gave his embroidered brocade robe a shake and shook his head.

"Just go tell him that I am a prisoner under watch and absolutely will not leave this cell. If he truly wishes to see me, then let His High-and-Mighty Highness... come in for a seat."

Master Zheng closed his eyes again and leaned back.

’Oh, for fuck’s sake!’

Upon hearing this, Scarface Liu’s legs nearly gave out. He cursed the injustice of the Celestial Dao, which treated all living things like dogs.

He tried every way he knew to persuade him, pleading that the Second Prince was not a man to be offended.

The stalemate lasted for about an hour.

"The Richest Person in the Imperial City, the only son of General Zheng Haoran. Who doesn’t know you?"

The man’s tone was icy, clearly intended as a show of force to intimidate Zheng Xiu.

Zheng Xiu shook his head, his eyes narrowing into a smile. "You know of me, but you don’t truly know me. Are you aware that when the Holy Emperor bestowed the title of ’Marquis Zhonglie’ upon the Zheng Family, he issued a special decree? It stated that I, the Marquis, am exempt from the ritual of kneeling—even before the Holy Emperor himself—unless I am attending the imperial court. This was to honor my father’s spirit in Heaven."

This was one of the reasons Zheng Xiu had no desire to become an official.

’I don’t have to kneel outside the court, but I’d have to kneel if I attended it.’
