As Adrian stood by the windows of his suite, his datapad pulsed to life. A message unfurled across the glowing screen, commanding him to report immediately to the Vanguard Hall. Beneath the golden text, a three-dimensional waypoint appeared, showing the path forward.

Adrian immediately turned his back on the view, and he exited his isolated suite, the doors sealing shut with a soft hiss behind him. He followed the waypoint through the labyrinthine corridors of the Academy.

Eventually, he reached his destination. The Vanguard Hall was vast and imposing, a colossal chamber.

Adrian’s footsteps slowed as his eyes locked onto the glowing runes in the walls. Though he couldn't understand their exact meaning, a sense of familiarity washed over him. He recognized isolated fragments and partial geometries here that mirrored the runes he had studied on the pages of his father's F-Rank Fireball skill book. And seeing them physically etched into the walls of the hall filled his mind with lots of questions.

There should be a purpose for these being etched in the wall. Perhaps it's to test, suppress, or amplify the volatile energies of the elites within.

Pulling his attention away from the walls, Adrian focused on the center of the room. Already gathered inside, standing in a perfectly spaced formation, were the six other students chosen for the Vanguard Program.

Each of them carried themselves with the hardened, unshakable confidence of individuals who had been explicitly trained since childhood.

At the front of the hall waited a middle-aged broad-shouldered man, the instructor. The deep scars crisscrossing his jaw and neck showed the brutal battles fought on the blood-soaked fringes of the Wastelands.

Adrian moved silently, taking his designated place in the line among his six peers. An expectant, suffocating silence stretched endlessly between them.

Then, the instructor finally spoke, "I am your instructor, Thorne," he announced, his gaze locking onto them. "An A-Rank Defender, and wielder of the Space affinity".

"Listen closely," Thorne continued, "I have waded through the blood of A-Rank behemoths whose mere roars would shatter your ribs and turn you into ash."

"You are here because the crystal told you that you are special. But out there, the Wastelands do not care about your potential. When you face true nightmares, some of you will inevitably break under the pressure, your minds shattering before your bodies do. But others... others will forge that terror into a blade. Others will rise".

He crossed his arms, "Introduce yourself. Names, affinities, and potential. That is all I want to hear".

"I do not care about your elite family backgrounds, and your parents' names mean nothing to me in this hall," Thorne added, "Your worth here begins and ends strictly with the power you can manifest on the battlefield".

A silver-haired youth took a half-step forward, "I am Kai. Space affinity, S-Rank potential".

To Kai's right, a girl with long golden hair said, "I am Seraphina. Celestial Light affinity, S-Rank potential".

One by one, each cadet spoke, revealing rare and lethal affinities, every one of them ranked at least S by the crystal.

"I'm Marcus, Metal affinity, S-Rank potential."

"I'm Elena, Ice affinity, S-Rank potential."

"I'm Damon, Poison affinity, S-Rank potential."

"I'm Lyra, Sound affinity, S-Rank potential."

"I'm Adrian, Echo affinity, SSS-Rank potential."

When Adrian spoke, every single gaze in the hall snapped toward him. Everyone here had heard the rumors regarding the unprecedented SSS-Rank awakening; it had been the most trending news across the globe over the past few days. To hear something and stand next to the anomaly in the flesh was clearly a different matter entirely.

Instructor Thorne studied Adrian with interest, "So... you are the one everyone has been endlessly discussing".

Adrian nodded silently as he looked at Instructor Thorne.

Thorne held Adrian’s gaze for a second longer before turning his attention back to the entire group. "You all possess incredibly rare affinities and historically high potential, yes," Thorne stated, his tone thoroughly unimpressed. "But you must carve this into your skulls right now: potential is not strength".

He uncrossed his arms, clasping his hands behind his back. "If you cannot wield these gifts with precision, they will only serve to betray you. Out on the battlefield, a single moment of hesitation and a fraction of incompetence mean only one thing: death".

Thorne began pacing before them, "You should have already received the detailed orientation files on exactly how the Vanguard Program operates".

"Your training here will not consist of safe drills or holographic simulations," he declared, dismantling the safety nets most students enjoyed. "You will grow strong by facing real battles. You will be thrust into life-and-death trials designed specifically to strip away your illusions, burn out your weaknesses, and forcefully reveal whether you have the fortitude to endure".

"That is the only viable path for wielders of affinities as exceptionally rare and dangerous as yours," Thorne continued, "Humanity possesses very few veterans who can adequately guide you. Therefore, your only true, unbiased teacher will be the battlefield itself. You will understand this harsh truth intimately very soon, when your very first mission is officially assigned".

"But before that happens, you will face a preliminary test. Alone". Thorne stopped in the center. "Each of you should have already received an F-Rank skill book tailored for your affinity upon your acceptance. Correct?"

The seven cadets nodded in unison.

Adrian maintained his stoic expression, but internally, he was momentarily taken aback. He had received an F-Rank Fireball skill book, yes, but that had come directly from his father's private vault.

But thinking back on his father's exact words that the Vanguard Program explicitly allowed them to pass down only one single skill book, Adrian fully grasped the strict logistics of the Academy.

While he possessed elite A-Rank parents who could provide skill books for him, some of the prodigies standing in this very room might hail from entirely different, less privileged circumstances. To maintain fairness in this crucible, the Academy ensured that every candidate possessed exactly one F-Rank skill book for their respective affinity to learn before the trials officially began.

"Did you all properly learn the skill codified within?" Thorne demanded, his voice echoing sharply. "Or did you foolishly squander your one week of preparation time?"

Kai lifted his chin, "I learned the skill"

"I learned the skill," Seraphina echoed quietly.

One by one, the confirmations followed down the line, a chorus of prodigies asserting their readiness. Adrian, matching their tone perfectly, finally said, "I learned the skill".

Thorne offered a curt, approving nod. "Good. Then you are adequately armed for the test".

"Your objective is straightforward. Each of you will venture individually into the Academy's expansive forest zone. Your target is to track down and hunt a Rank E monster".

Adrian felt his muscles tense slightly. He had battled against the holographic projection of an F-Rank Razorcat with mere physical combat techniques before his awakening. So now, with his Fireball skill combined with his combat ability, he felt he should be able to deal with this.

Thorne seemed to read their collective thoughts. "Do not be deceived by the low classification of 'Rank E'," he warned, "You may have just learned an offensive or defensive skill, but it is merely an F-Rank manifestation. An E-Rank beast is a hardened, supernatural predator, vastly stronger, faster, and more resilient than any normal human. If you underestimate its ferocity, it will result in your immediate death".

"This hunt is explicitly meant to test your fundamental worthiness to fully enter the Vanguard Program. Every single one of you should have undergone rigorous physical combat training since early childhood. Now, you must seamlessly merge that foundational learning with the destructive application of your newfound powers to defeat your prey".

"If you cannot synthesize your combat instincts with your affinity, you will die. And if you somehow survive but fail the hunt, the unworthy among you will be permanently removed from the Vanguard Program in disgrace".

Thorne raised two fingers. "You will have exactly two days to complete this objective. There are no second chances. Your datapads will continuously update with the necessary intelligence regarding your specifically assigned prey".

As if on cue, Adrian felt his device pulse warmly against his palm. Around him, the subtle shifts in posture indicated the other six cadets were experiencing the exact same updates.

"When you succeed," Thorne emphasized the word 'when', a heavy inflection that carried both a brutal challenge and an expectation, "you must physically scan the monster's corpse with your device for official confirmation".

"That is all".

With a dismissive wave, the instructor ended the gathering. "You are dismissed. Train diligently, prepare yourselves for the bloodshed, and survive".

Without uttering a single word to one another, the seven prodigies broke formation. The immense, crushing weight of the imminent, life-or-death trial had already entirely consumed their focus.

There was no room left in their minds for pleasantries, networking, or casual talk among peers. One by one, Kai, Seraphina, Marcus, and the others vanished silently into the shadowed corridors that led back toward their respective private suites.

Adrian, however, remained in the vast hall for a fleeting moment longer. He stood in the oppressive quiet, his gaze intensely studying the glowing runes that continued to pulse within the walls.

Then finally, he turned away.

His footsteps echoed loudly in the chamber as he departed. Thorne stood in silence, his eyes watching Adrian's retreating form until the SSS-Rank anomaly finally disappeared into a dark corridor.
