- Prologue
Torvain's crimson energy form surged through the void, and the moment his transformed existence stabilized, the entire balance of the battlefield shifted in a way that both sides could feel instantly.
The authority Torvain wielded now had risen to eighty percent, and when it clashed against Asteria's seventy percent authority, the division of reality changed at once. The contested authority split unevenly, forty-five percent pressing under Torvain's command while only thirty-five percent remained under Asteria's control. That ten percent difference was not a small advantage at their level. It was a blade held against the throat of reality itself.
Yet Torvain knew authority alone was not enough to win this battle. If authority had been enough, then the three of them should have already crushed Asteria before this. She had been deprived of her authority techniques for most of the fight, yet her terrifying movement, battle instincts, and physical refinement had allowed her to hold against them.
Without hesitation, Torvain dashed toward her, his crimson energy body stretching into a streak that cut through the void like burning blood. He layered his authority techniques, using his surplus ten percent to activate his offensive authority technique and make his afterimages real, while keeping the contested thirty-five percent stable and ready for negation the instant Asteria tried to use any authority technique of her own.
Asteria's eyes narrowed as Torvain came for her, the crimson energy form splitting into multiple images around her. She understood the situation immediately. If she wasted her own authority on a technique, Torvain's reserved authority would negate it. If she tried to force through with power, she would only burn more energy into a wall he had already prepared to counter. So instead of wasting energy, she relied on the one advantage that had carried her through the entire battle until now. Her Speed.
Her body shifted like a flash of red-gold light, avoiding each of Torvain's approaching afterimages before they fully closed the distance. She slipped backward, then sideways, then upward through the void, maintaining a long distance from every copy he created. She knew the mechanics of energy body arts far too well. Torvain was essentially burning his Rule Core to sustain this state, and as long as she survived until that flame devoured its own foundation, victory would come to her without needing to risk a decisive exchange.
But suddenly, Asteria noticed something wrong.
As she moved, Torvain moved with her.
The gap that should have remained between them vanished again and again. His speed, which had been noticeably slower than hers before, was now matching her closely enough that her usual evasions no longer created safety. Asteria's pupils contracted as panic pierced through her confidence for the first time since the battle began, and that brief instant was all Torvain needed.
Four identical afterimages blurred into existence around her, fanning out to encircle her from every conceivable blind spot. Through his offensive authority technique, every single one of those afterimages became real at the moment of attack, each wielding the same crimson energy blade Torvain held in his true body. The blades descended together, crossing through the void in converging arcs that left no ordinary path of escape.
"How is this possible?" Asteria snarled as she dashed back with everything she had, but even her retreat came too late to avoid the full assault. Crimson blades tore through her side, shoulder, and thigh, cutting into her body and forcing blood to spill into the void. It was the first time since the battle began that she had been seriously wounded.
For the first time, the foundation of Asteria's confidence cracked.
All this time, the main advantage she had depended on was her raw physical speed. That speed allowed her to survive even when her authority techniques were suppressed, to dodge the attacks of three Peak Rule Stage elders, to choose when to engage and when to retreat. If Torvain could now match that speed while also holding the advantage in authority, then what did that make her? It reduced her to a mortal facing a god, a warrior whose greatest weapon had suddenly been stolen from her hands.
Torvain did not give her time to think. His crimson form accelerated again, and his afterimages appeared ahead of him, beside him, and behind Asteria, each one real enough to force a response. Asteria twisted away from the first strike, parried the second with her forearm, and tried to slip beneath the third, but Torvain's true blade descended from above with terrifying precision. She crossed her arms and blocked, and the collision drove her downward through the void, her body tearing through layers of broken domain residue left behind by their earlier clashes.
Her face twisted with rage.
From far away, Varcain and Caelum watched the scene with disbelief thickening across their faces. They had pulled back because Torvain had ordered them to, but neither had truly retreated from the battle in spirit. Their domains remained prepared, their wills locked onto every fluctuation, ready to intervene the instant Torvain collapsed. Yet what they were witnessing made no sense.
"This should not be happening," Varcain muttered, his voice low and strained. "That art does not increase movement to this degree."
Caelum did not answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on Torvain's crimson energy form, following every movement, every acceleration, every impossible shift in position. He knew the energy body art Torvain had activated. All of them knew it. It was not some ancient secret technique passed down through lost ruins, nor an inherited art refined by an Astral Stage being. It was the common energy body art they had purchased openly through the wider market, the kind countless sects used because it was stable, reliable, and well understood.
Its effect was simple. It allowed the cultivator to dissolve their physical body temporarily into an energy form more closely aligned with their divine concept, increasing conceptual purity and raising authority. It did not grant sudden mastery over movement, nor did it transform a cultivator's instincts into something sharper than they had been before. So why was Torvain suddenly moving like that?
"He was never this fast," Varcain said, his jaw tightening as he watched Torvain force Asteria back again.
Caelum's expression darkened. "Yeah, he should not be able to follow Asteria's movements like this. Even in energy form, the art should only increase authority and conceptual purity. It should not make him move as if his body itself has been rebuilt for speed."
Even Torvain himself felt the contradiction. His battle focus remained absolute, but a part of his mind registered the change with growing confusion. The moment he had entered energy form, he had expected greater authority, greater conceptual weight, perhaps enough power to force Asteria into a corner through sheer pressure, but he had not expected his speed to rise to this level.
It was as if the energy composing him was moving along a more perfect path than he understood. His will would choose a direction, and before the delay of thought could form, his energy body had already aligned itself to the most efficient route.
What none of them could see was the miniature white-grey seed pulsing near the center of Torvain's energy form, close to where his Rule Core burned like a crimson sun. It was hidden beneath layers of crimson divine essence. It did not reveal its presence, nor did it release overwhelming power. It merely resonated with Torvain's transformed state, reading the structure of his energy body and correcting imperfections so subtle that even Peak Rule Stage perception could not notice them. His energy flow became cleaner, his movement became more efficient, and the wasteful resistance within the energy body art was silently erased.
The fight continued with brutal intensity, and Asteria barely managed to deflect another strike aimed at her chest. Her pride bled just as heavily as her body. She had fought countless cultivators across her life, crushed warriors from lesser sects, battled mercenaries, and survived wars that had turned star systems into graveyards.

She was Asteria of the Ashen Vortex Sect, one of the strongest beings beneath Ignis himself. She could not accept being butchered by an elder from a backwater alchemy sect who should have been exhausted and dying.
Torvain appeared before her again, his crimson blade cutting toward her neck. Asteria ducked, twisted, and kicked outward, forcing him back half a step, but even that brief victory did not bring relief. He was still there. He was still fast enough. Worse, his authority still pressed harder than hers. If this continued even for a few more exchanges, she would die.
"You bastard," Asteria snarled aloud, her fury finally overwhelming the restraint she had maintained. "You think you can corner me? Do not think you are the only one willing to burn your foundation."
She had never expected she would be forced to use her own energy body art against an elder from an alchemy sect. The humiliation burned hotter than her wounds, but she no longer had another option. If she refused to transform, Torvain would kill her before his energy body art consumed him.
Asteria's physical form instantly disintegrated. Red-gold essence erupted from within her, swallowing flesh, blood, and bone into a blazing humanoid storm. Her energy body stabilized in a violent flare, and the pressure she emitted rose sharply, forcing the surrounding void to ripple as her own authority climbed. The moment her transformation completed, she dashed forward without another word.
Torvain met her without retreating.
Their energy blades collided at the center of the void, and the explosion that followed pushed Varcain and Caelum backward despite the distance between them. Waves of crimson and red-gold essence rippled outward, tearing through the empty micro-dimension like the breath of two dying stars. Authority split evenly now, forty percent against forty percent, neither able to claim an advantage in the rules around them.
Asteria's speed returned to its previous dominance, but Torvain remained there with her.
She struck from above, her energy arm becoming a blazing spear aimed directly at his Rule Core. Torvain raised his energy blade and parried, the collision sending sparks of divine essence scattering through the void. He countered with three afterimages, each one attacking from a different angle, but Asteria's energy form twisted with terrifying fluidity. She blocked one, slipped past another, and kicked through the third before launching herself toward his chest.
Torvain crossed his arms, forming a crimson barrier at the last instant. Her blow smashed into it and cracked the energy construct, but he used the recoil to spin behind her and slash across her back. Asteria's energy form split around the blade and reformed as she dodged back, the wound closing but the loss of essence visible to everyone watching.
For several heartbeats, neither side gained ground. They moved too quickly for ordinary sight to follow. Crimson and red-gold streaks clashed again and again across the void, appearing in one place, vanishing, and reappearing thousands of meters away with every collision. Authority did not decide the battle now. Both held equal shares, and both denied the other any decisive rule modification. Speed did not decide it either, because Torvain somehow kept pace. Power did not decide it, because their energy forms met blow for blow. The fight had become one of endurance, instinct, and willforce.
And that was what worried Caelum most.
His expression grew colder as he watched Torvain's movements. The elder was holding his own, but the strain on his will was increasing with every exchange. Even with the strange improvement to his speed, Torvain had entered energy form while already exhausted. His willforce had been worn down throughout the earlier battle, and now every clash demanded impossible concentration. Asteria, despite her wounds, had conserved far more of herself before transforming. If this became a battle of attrition, Torvain would lose.
Caelum could already see the situation worsening. Torvain's energy form did not falter visibly, but the rhythm of his attacks carried a minute delay that only someone watching with complete focus could notice. One missed exchange, one slow reaction, one lapse in concentration, and Asteria would drive a blade into his Rule Core. Finally, Caelum started moving forward.
Varcain saw it, and he did not need Caelum to explain anything. He understood the situation and the next step instantly. His face tightened, but he moved with him, crimson essence rising from his body as his own physical form began to dissolve.
"Torvain will curse us for this if we survive," Varcain said, his voice heavy.
"Then let him curse us alive," Caelum replied.
Their bodies transformed almost simultaneously. Crimson essence erupted from them both, flesh dissolving into energy as their Rule Cores burned brighter. The same energy body art activated, wrapping them in powerful crimson forms. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
For an instant, both men braced themselves for the agony, the tearing sensation, the familiar terror of feeling their Rule Cores burn at the foundation. But the sensation did not arrive the way it should have. The transformation was smooth, almost impossibly smooth, as if something inside them had silently corrected the process before the damage could truly begin.
They had no time to understand it.
Caelum and Varcain dashed toward Asteria.
Asteria sensed them coming and realized immediately that the battle had turned into a nightmare. In one sense, this was the same old situation repeating again, with Caelum and Varcain suppressing her authority while Torvain fought her directly. But she knew very well it was not the same situation anymore. Torvain's speed now matched hers, and Caelum and Varcain were no longer merely supporting from the side. They were attacking, and from just their dashing toward her, she could see that their speed was terrifying.
Asteria tried to twist away, but the three crimson energy forms surrounded her in a near-perfect triangle. Torvain attacked first, forcing her to raise her blade and meet him directly. The instant she committed to the defense, Caelum appeared to her left, his energy blade aimed at the exact point where her Rule Core pulsed beneath her chest. She shifted her body to avoid the strike, but Varcain arrived from the right and drove his fist into the path of her retreat, releasing a concentrated burst of crimson essence that shattered the outer layer of her energy form.
Asteria screamed and retaliated with a wide slash, but Caelum and Varcain used their authority together to negate the technique before it could fully manifest. The command collapsed, and her attack became nothing more than raw energy, which Torvain split apart with a downward strike. He appeared above her in the same instant, his afterimages multiplying around him.
Tens of crimson figures appeared around Asteria, each one carrying the same lethal intent. Through Torvain's authority technique, they became real for the briefest fraction of time, and that brief fraction was enough. Caelum and Varcain added their own movements into the assault, their energy forms leaving streaks of crimson light as they struck from angles Asteria could no longer track.
Asteria tried to escape. She no longer cared about killing them, no longer cared about pride, no longer cared about the humiliation of retreating before elders of the Crimson Vital Sect. All that remained in her mind was survival. But the three surrounded her completely. Every path she tried to take closed before she reached it. Every movement she made was predicted, intercepted, and punished. Every attempt to use authority was crushed before it could form.
For the first time, true fear filled her.
"No," Asteria screamed, her red-gold energy form flickering violently as cracks spread toward her chest. "I cannot die here. I am Asteria of the Ashen Vortex Sect. I cannot die to you."
Torvain's voice emerged from his crimson energy form, "You should have thought of that before you raised your hand against our sect."
The final strike came from all three at once. Torvain's blade descended from above, Caelum's spear-like thrust pierced from the front, and Varcain's condensed fist drove in from behind. Their attacks met at the center of Asteria's chest, precisely where her Rule Core burned within the energy form. For a single instant, the red-gold light inside her body flared violently as if trying to resist dissolution.
Then her Rule Core cracked.
The crack spread through the core like a fracture across glass, splitting again and again until the entire structure began to disintegrate. Asteria's energy form convulsed, her mouth opening in a silent scream that no longer had the strength to become sound. Red-gold essence spilled outward, then dimmed, then dissolved into the void as the concept sustaining her body lost cohesion.
Within a few breaths, Asteria was gone.
Torvain, Caelum, and Varcain remained floating in the void, their crimson energy forms still burning around them. None of them spoke immediately. The silence after the battle felt almost unreal, especially after the intensity of the clash. Then Torvain slowly dismissed his energy body art, expecting pain, collapse, and the dreadful backlash that should have followed such a reckless transformation after prolonged combat.
His physical body reformed. He clutched his chest, bracing for the damage to his Rule Core. But nothing happened. His Rule Core was intact. It was strained, yes, and his willforce was low, but the terrifying damage he had expected was simply not there.
Torvain stared at his own hand, then at Caelum and Varcain as they also reverted back to their physical forms.
"How?" Torvain asked, his voice rough with disbelief. "What is going on here?"
Caelum placed one hand over his own chest, his expression equally stunned. "My Rule Core is intact. I felt the transformation, I felt the authority rise, but the burning that should have consumed the foundation never reached the core."
Varcain's face shifted between shock and relief before settling into confusion, "That is impossible. Energy body arts do not work like this. They always demand a price."
After a long silence, Caelum finally spoke, "Whatever happened, we are alive, and Asteria is dead. We need to help others."
Together, the three elders turned toward the deeper layers of the micro-dimension, their bodies weary but alive, carrying with them both victory and a mystery that none of them could yet name.
