The door hissed open, releasing a pressurized gasp, and in stormed a tall, imposing figure. Blonde hair, tied up in a loose braid, tumbled over her shoulders. Her formal pirate attire fit her lithe, muscular frame, exuding authority and presence.
Aster.
The Fifth Princess of the Kingdom. The exiled royal. And—perhaps the most pressing detail—one of the people Syn least wanted to deal with right now.
His fingers continued working on the present, peeling away the wrapping paper as if he hadn't even noticed her entrance.
"Syn! Syn!" Aster's voice thundered through the room, sharp and unrelenting. She stormed toward him, her boots clanging against the metal floor, her blonde hair whipping behind her like a banner of fury. Her hands slammed against the force field, the barrier shimmering with each impact as she yelled his name. "Syn! Don't ignore me, you arrogant bastard!"
Syn didn't flinch. He kept his back turned to her, his focus entirely on the half-opened present in his hands. The wrapping paper crinkled softly as he peeled it away, his movements deliberate and unhurried. He wasn't going to give her the satisfaction of a reaction—not this time.
Aster's fists pounded against the force field again, the sound reverberating through the room. "Didn't he cancel the contract yet?" she barked, turning her glare toward Vera.
Vera, lounging on the sofa at the far end of the room, shrugged nonchalantly. "Not yet," she said, her tone dripping with mock innocence. "He's been... preoccupied."
Aster's eyes narrowed, her frustration boiling over. She turned back to Syn, her voice rising to a shout. "Look at me! Cancel the contract right now, or else you're going to regret it later!"
The force field trembled violently as Aster continued to bang on it, her strength making the entire room seem to shake. "You think this is funny? You think this is funny?" she snarled, her voice cracking with rage.
Syn didn't respond. Instead, he started humming a tune, the melody soft and infuriatingly cheerful. It was a small act of defiance, but it was enough to push Aster over the edge. A vein popped on her forehead, her face flushing red as she clenched her fists.
"Vera, turn off this force field!" Aster shouted, her voice echoing through the room. "I don't care about the contract anymore. Just turn it off. I'm going to kill this bastard with my own hands. Just turn. It. Off!"
Vera shook her head, her expression calm but firm. "You know I can't do that."
Aster let out a frustrated growl and punched the force field again, the impact sending a deafening crack through the room. Syn flinched but didn't turn around.
"Listen," Aster said, her voice low and dangerous. "Don't get cocky just because I can't touch you. I can make anyone else torture you until you cancel the contract. It's only because we choose not to hurt you that you're still in one piece."
Syn continued humming, his fingers carefully unwrapping the present. The nerve on Aster's forehead twitched again, and she slammed her fist against the force field once more.
"Turn it off!" she yelled, her voice shaking with fury. "I don't care anymore. Screw the contract. Screw you. I just want to break his limbs one by one right now. TURN IT OFF!"
Vera stood up from the sofa and walked over to Aster, placing a calming hand on her shoulder. "Calm down, Aster," she said, her voice soothing but laced with amusement. "He's busy unwrapping my presents. Don't disturb him."
"Shut up."
Aster's eyes widened, her anger momentarily replaced by disbelief. "Why won't he look at me?" she asked, her voice softer now, almost pleading. "I just want him to look at me. Tell him to look at me."
Vera tilted her head, considering Aster's expression with something almost akin to pity. Then, she simply nodded.
"Ok. Ok. I'll say it. I'm sorry. Ok? Please. I'm sorry, Syn. Please say something now." Aster's voice trembled, her earlier anger melting into desperation.
Syn sighed inwardly. He had hoped that Aster, with her fiery temper, might be the one to break him free from this prison. But now, instead of raging, she was crumbling into sadness. He knew what was coming next.
Sniff. Sniff.
"Hey! Are you listening? I said I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. Ok? Sniff. Now say something. Don't ignore me." Her voice cracked, and tears began to well up in her eyes, streaming down her face in earnest.
Syn felt a pang of guilt. Aster was tall, strong, and unapologetically expressive. She wore her emotions on her sleeve—anger, sadness, happiness—all of them raw and unfiltered. And now, he had made her cry. This wasn't like Vera's calculated tears; this was real. Aster had always been this way, her emotions as vast and uncontrollable as the cosmos itself.
Reluctantly, Syn turned his head and looked behind him. Aster was kneeling on the floor, her shoulders shaking as she cried. Vera was nowhere to be seen; it seemed she had left the room, leaving the two of them alone.
"Stop crying, Aster. You've grown now," Syn said, his voice calm but firm. It was the first time he had spoken directly to her since she had stormed into the room.
Aster's head snapped up, her tear-streaked face lighting up with hope. "Syn!" she exclaimed, her voice a mix of joy and relief. She scrambled to her feet, her arms outstretched as if to hug him, but the force field stopped her short. She collided with the barrier, stumbling back slightly. "Fck this shit," she muttered under her breath.
"Syn..." she began, her voice trembling. There was so much she wanted to say, so many words bottled up inside her. But now, with him standing right in front of her, her mind went blank. All she could manage was his name. Yet, somehow, that felt like enough. She stepped forward again, trying to reach him, but the force field held firm.
Frustration surged through her, and with a cry of anger, she slammed both hands against the barrier with all her strength. The force field shuddered violently, but it held. The ceiling, however, wasn't so resilient. A metallic clang echoed through the room as a section of the ceiling collapsed, revealing a gaping hole above.
Syn's eyes flicked upward, and a small smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Thank you," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Before Aster could react, Syn moved. He leaped onto the bed, then onto the nearby table, and from there, he launched himself upward, grabbing the edges of the hole in the ceiling. With a grunt of effort, he pulled himself through, disappearing into the space above.
Aster stared in shock, her tears momentarily forgotten. "Syn! Get back here!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the room. But he was already gone, crawling through the narrow space above the ceiling. The area was a maze of electrical wiring and empty ducts, but thankfully, there were no cameras in such a cramped, unused space.
Syn moved quickly, taking turns at random, putting as much distance between himself and the room as possible. Aster's curses followed him, growing fainter with each passing second. He didn't look back. He couldn't. This was his chance, and he wasn't going to waste it.
