A bullet whizzed through the air and struck the silver-haired man in the shoulder. Terrence Grant immediately drove a kick into the wound, knocking him unconscious before making a swift retreat.
Hughes had also defeated The Holy Lord, but not without sustaining serious injuries himself.
Seraphina Sterling’s prediction had been correct; there was indeed a second group looking to take them out. Her original plan was to simply injure the first group and let the second one engage them—let dog eat dog.
But the farther she ran, the more she felt something was wrong. ’Why is it completely silent behind us? Based on the sounds from earlier, there should be a lot of them. If they really clashed with the silver-haired man’s group, there ought to be a huge commotion!’
’Did they not fight? Impossible. The silver-haired man was only unconscious. With Terrence Grant’s intelligence, he must have thought of the same plan I did. He wouldn’t have dealt a fatal blow! As long as the second group caught up, they would have to fight the silver-haired man’s men!’
"Stop thinking about it. They’ve all gone to report to The Underworld," Terrence Grant said. A single glance was all it took for him to know what was on Seraphina Sterling’s mind.
Seraphina Sterling stopped in her tracks, stunned. "How is that possible? I didn’t hear a thing!"
"Pick up the pace if you don’t want to die!" Terrence Grant’s tone was grave. "Do you know why that silver-haired man is called king? It’s because of his uncannily precise and unpredictable marksmanship. In the world of international mercenaries, king is a god of guns. As long as he has a gun in his hands, he can’t be beaten, no matter how many people surround him."
’But why would such a major figure come to assassinate me? Right now, I’m just a young master of the Grant Family and nothing more. Even if someone had a grudge against me and wanted to make a move, they wouldn’t go to such lengths as to hire king himself!’
"What about you versus him? Who’s better?" Seraphina Sterling was dying to know. Watching them clash just now had been absolutely exhilarating.
"I don’t know." Terrence Grant picked up his pace again. Other than this encounter, they had never formally faced off. But king’s reputation in the business was legendary; anyone he targeted had virtually no chance of survival.
Seraphina Sterling, however, had her own take. ’If it were a contest of marksmanship, king would undoubtedly have the upper hand. But in close-quarters combat, Terrence Grant would be superior. On the battlefield, though, victory is never decided by a single skill. Whoever survives is the winner.’
After two hours of trekking through the mountain forest, the three of them finally made it back to the main road. Four men with two cars were already there, waiting for them.
"Boss!"
Terrence Grant got straight into the car without a word, his expression grim.
"Let’s head back first." Hughes, who already had a poker face, looked even more forbidding as his expression darkened. Paired with the bloodstains on his arm, it was obvious he had just been through a vicious fight.
The car was dead silent. The driver was someone Seraphina Sterling had never seen before. ’They arrived so quickly. It looks like Hughes contacted them the moment we were attacked.’
As the minutes ticked by, Terrence Grant watched Seraphina Sterling, who had at some point fallen asleep beside him. A rare flicker of tenderness showed in his eyes. ’Thank god we made it through safely this time, and she’s unharmed. It looks like I really have to keep her away from my world. Otherwise, who knows how many more attacks like this there will be.’
"Take her home first." They had finally reached the town, and Terrence Grant broke the silence. Seraphina Sterling woke up just then.
The only sound in the car was Hughes giving directions. Seraphina Sterling looked at Terrence Grant’s cold, unapproachable expression. She wanted to say something, but swallowed her words and got out of the car.
"Seraphina Sterling, don’t be fooled by Wyatt Gallagher’s smiling facade. He’s the shrewdest one in the Gallagher Family." In the end, Terrence Grant couldn’t hold it in any longer. He’d been bottling that up the entire ride.
At his words, Seraphina Sterling paused. "It seems the arrogant and reckless Mr. Grant has another side to him as well. Everyone hides their true self, don’t they?"
Terrence Grant’s expression turned exceptionally grim, and his tone grew icy. "I’ll be waiting for you at the estate next week."
Seraphina Sterling gave a warm smile. "I hope you’re still alive by then. You can be the first person to successfully survive an encounter with king."
This time, Terrence Grant was so furious he was speechless. He just slammed the door shut, and the two cars sped off, kicking up a cloud of dust. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
When Seraphina Sterling entered the house, the living room light was still on. Kimberly Jennings was practicing calligraphy. Bathed in the warm, dim light, Kimberly Jennings, dressed in ink-wash style loungewear, held a calligraphy brush. With each deliberate stroke, she exuded a serene elegance, as if she had stepped right out of an ancient scroll.
"Seraphina, what took you so long? I called you so many times. Why didn’t you answer?" Kimberly Jennings set down her calligraphy brush and walked over.
"Sorry, my phone was on silent, so I didn’t hear it. Mom, I had no idea you were so talented! Your calligraphy could rival a master’s!" Seraphina Sterling quickly changed the subject. ’Thank goodness I tidied myself up before coming inside,’ she thought, ’and even more so that I wore dark clothes today. Even after trekking through the forest, I don’t look too messy.’
"You’re just flattering me. It’s not that good." Kimberly Jennings smiled and immediately headed for the kitchen. "Go wash your hands. It’s time for dinner."
Only then did Seraphina Sterling let out a sigh of relief. Watching Kimberly Jennings’s busy figure and her gentle smile, she felt a small fire kindle in her heart. Waves of warmth spread through her veins, making her feel cozy all over.
’No matter what,’ she vowed to herself, ’I have to protect this warmth, to hold onto this feeling.’
A deep chill hung in the late autumn morning air. A light fog draped a mysterious veil over the beautiful little town.
Seraphina Sterling was up very early, for she had something important to do today.
