Hughes: ...
’Young Master, is it really a good idea to be so stubborn?’ Hughes thought. ’But for the sake of my own neck, I’d better keep my mouth shut!’
After dinner, Seraphina Sterling and Wyatt Gallagher went their separate ways. She had planned to head back tonight, but looking at the sky, she wasn’t sure if she could still catch the last bus!
Just as Seraphina was about to hail a taxi, a black sedan pulled up directly in front of her. Hughes rolled down the window. "Get in!"
’Did I seriously hitch a ride here just to hitch another one back?’ Seraphina was torn, but she had no choice if she wanted to keep her promise to Kimberly Jennings!
Seraphina had intended to avoid Terrence Grant by sitting in the front passenger seat, but only after getting in did she realize he wasn’t in the car.
Hughes saw the confusion in her eyes at a glance. Thinking of a certain someone who had sent him to pick her up while he himself went back to the hotel, Hughes was at a loss for words. ’The Young Master’s mind is too hard to read!’
"The Young Master is still at the hotel. We’ll go pick him up, then head back to town!"
Seraphina didn’t press for more details, even though she really wanted to know why Terrence Grant was staying at a hotel. Hadn’t he come for the auction?
The car pulled up to the hotel entrance, where Terrence Grant was already waiting.
Dressed in black casual wear, Terrence Grant’s tall, powerful build and handsome features drew the attention of many passersby. He, however, seemed long accustomed to such scenes, his gaze fixed calmly on the approaching black sedan.
Hughes dutifully got out and opened the car door for Terrence Grant.
Terrence Grant glanced at the passenger seat, then walked around to the other side and commandeered Hughes’s spot.
Hughes was baffled. ’What’s happening now? Have I been laid off as the driver?’
"I’m giving you the night off. You drive too slow. You’ll cut into my sleep time!" With that, Terrence Grant started the car, executed a flashy turn, and immediately sped off!
As Hughes settled into the comfortable back seat, he was utterly conflicted. The Young Master had never once complained about his driving skills! He glanced at Seraphina in the passenger seat. ’Could it be that the Young Master kicked me to the back just so he could sit next to her? When did he become so childish!’
There were barely any cars on the road back. Terrence Grant drove at a blistering pace, but the ride was smooth. At this speed, they would reach Tollan Town in less than an hour! 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
Seraphina stared into the pitch-black night, her eyes slightly unfocused. Everything was proceeding step-by-step according to her plan. The only thing that had exceeded her expectations was this arrogant young master beside her. He had taught her so much and helped her in so many ways, but she couldn’t keep being indebted to him! It always made her feel like she was a step beneath him in his presence. ’This relationship has to change!’
A sudden jolt of the car pulled her back from her thoughts. It was a faint sound, but one she knew all too well. Seraphina’s expression instantly turned grim, and behind them, Hughes had already drawn a pistol from his waistband!
"Young Master, there’s a car tailing us!"
"Hold on tight!" Terrence Grant said to Seraphina. The moment the words left his mouth, the already speeding car accelerated even more!
Watching the scenery fly past the window, Seraphina was surprised to find that she felt remarkably calm, like the still surface of a lake without a single ripple. This was true even though she was facing immense danger, even though she could be dead in the next instant!
Terrence Grant’s driving was superb, but it was clear the other driver was skilled as well. With two sharp PINGS, a pair of bullets struck the glass, only to be deflected!
Seraphina stared at the glass in astonishment, the corner of her mouth twitching. "It’s actually bulletproof? My dear Teacher Grant, just how many enemies do you have? No, I should be asking, just how afraid are you of dying?"
Terrence Grant remained unbothered, driving with an air of casual confidence, not at all fazed by the crisis. Seraphina’s use of the word "my" put him in a particularly good mood. "You’re not scared?"
"I’m Mr. Grant’s student, after all. If I don’t even have this much nerve, how could I ever graduate from his tutelage?" Seraphina found it strange herself. Why, in the face of such peril, did she feel not fear, but a surge of excitement from the depths of her heart!
Terrence Grant handed her a small, silver pistol. "Let’s see if your marksmanship has gotten rusty."
Without a second thought, Seraphina rolled down the window, aimed at the pursuing car, and fired. BANG! BANG! Two tires blew. The sudden malfunction sent the car swerving sideways, coming to a halt across the middle of the road!
"Seraphina, you’ve improved again!" Hughes gave her a thumbs-up from the back seat. After all, he was the one who had first taught her how to shoot!
"I’m starting to notice that the odds of getting shot at are exceptionally high when I’m with you two! Can’t you just find the mastermind behind all this and put an end to it for good?" Seraphina decided to keep the pistol. It would be good to have, just in case!
Hughes’s expression suddenly grew serious. "If only it were that simple."
Seraphina didn’t ask any more questions. Terrence Grant was the famous Mr. Grant of Aethelgard. If he were truly as arrogant, flashy, and idle as he appeared on the surface, how could he possibly become the future Mr. Grant whose very name would strike fear into the hearts of men?
The car continued to race forward. Suddenly, Seraphina’s eyes widened in alarm, and she threw herself at Terrence Grant. An instant later, a bullet pierced through the glass on her side, passed through the cabin, exited through the glass on his side, and vanished into the night!
One word immediately flashed through all three of their minds—sniper!
