- Chapter 1: The Life He Was Meant to Live
Grace walked back from the meeting with Irene and Luca beside her, her expression calm, serene even. The mask she’d worn for weeks was now settling comfortably over frustration she refused to show.
That didn’t go how it should have.
The accusation hadn’t been perfect of course. Cole’s anger, Darius’s calm testimony, the timing, the setting – all designed to create uncertainty.
It wasn’t perfect, but it should have been more than enough for someone like Ronan Ashbourne to handle.
Instead, Ronan had turned it around rather easily.
Irene broke the silence first. "Did it fail?"
Grace didn’t respond immediately. She walked steadily, hands folded loosely in front of her as she fixed her gaze ahead.
"No," she said finally. "It did what it was meant to do."
Irene’s brow furrowed. "Cole and Darius accused him directly. Class B didn’t turn on him."
"The accusation was never meant to destroy him immediately." Grace’s tone remained gentle, thoughtful.
He hadn’t panicked. He hadn’t defended himself hastily, and he hadn’t revealed too much.
Technically it wasn’t that impressive. No, it wasn’t very impressive at all. If someone like Iris or Freya had done it, Grace wouldn’t have batted an eye.
But that was the problem.
Ronan Ashbourne wasn’t supposed to be this kind of person.
In the story she’d written, Ronan was emotional, desperate, reactive. A character whose failures existed to highlight the protagonist’s growth. He made impulsive decisions, trusted the wrong people, and collapsed under pressure.
The person she’d just faced was none of those things.
"He’s different," Grace murmured, more to herself than Irene.
Irene glanced at her. "Different? Have you met my brother before?"
Grace considered her answer carefully. She couldn’t explain too much.
"Different from the rumors."
Irene nodded, understanding. It seemed she’d had similar thoughts as well.
Grace dismissed Irene and Luca once they reached the edge of Class S’s territory, claiming she needed time alone to review some things.
Neither of them questioned it. They’d grown accustomed to her occasional withdrawals, mistaking them for prayer or some form of personal contemplation.
She waited until their footsteps faded before veering toward the isolated grove she’d claimed days ago when this exam first started.
The moment she crossed into its shelter, her shoulders sagged. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖
Grace pressed her palms against her temples and exhaled slowly.
She remembered the day it happened. Late evening. Her apartment. The cursor blinking at the end of Chapter 412.
She was struggling to figure out what to write. She’d been stuck on that Chapter for a week, unable to continue the story and the backlog of Chapters was catching up to her...
Then nothing.
Darkness.
She woke in Grace Light’s body, disoriented, terrified, confused... and briefly thrilled.
Her own world. Her own characters.
She’d be able to see Luca become the hero she’d envisioned.
Watch Iris’s political arc unfold, and guide the narrative from the inside.
Except there was something wrong.
She quickly realized that.
The world wasn’t how she had written it.
Not completely.
Aura Acheron wasn’t supposed to be here.
Not at the Academy.
Not free.
In her outline, Aura remained imprisoned – mana-sealed – until Luca rescued her in a later arc.
Yet Aura was here.
S-Class.
Second-ranked.
Exactly as Grace had written her personality-wise, down to the arrogant detachment and bored superiority.
But wrong somehow. She couldn’t explain it.
Then there was Iris. The engagement with Ronan – one of her major story arcs – had been broken before Grace even arrived.
And Irene was different too. Sharper. More uncertain about her brother than she had written.
But the biggest anomaly at the center of it all?
Ronan Ashbourne.
Grace had written him as emotional, reactive, desperate. A minor noble whose failures existed to make Luca’s success more meaningful.
That was literally it. That was his purpose in mind when she had written him into her story.
Someone who made impulsive decisions, trusted the wrong people, and collapsed under the pressure of him responsibilities.
The person she’d just faced at the meeting was not like that. No, he was nothing like the Ronan she had written.
When Cole accused him of attacking Darius, Ronan hadn’t panicked or defended himself hastily.
He’d reframed the situation, exposed the manipulation, and turned Class B’s doubt back on Cole.
That wasn’t the Ronan I wrote.
And that engagement – he ended it. The original Ronan would never have done that. His obsession with Iris was supposed to drive half his early failures.
Grace sat on a moss-covered stone, staring at her hands.
What changed?
She’d considered every possibility. Her transmigration altering events. Aura’s presence creating ripples. Some external force rewriting the story.
But Ronan felt different in a way she couldn’t explain.
Not like a character evolving naturally. Like someone had replaced him entirely.
Could he be like me?
A transmigrator.
A random person also sent into her world.
Or maybe he was someone who had read her novel.
It could also be divine intervention. I have to be careful about that too. The gods shouldn’t be active yet, but that doesn’t mean anything given everything.
She pulled out a small leather journal she kept hidden in her robes – not for prayers, but for notes. Observations.
She flipped to the page marked Ronan Ashbourne and added a new line beneath the others.
Calm under accusation. Reframed Cole’s testimony. Predicted my strategy. Deflected suspicion without hesitation.
She stared at the words, frustration curling through her chest.
And she wrote a few more lines.
Grace sighed.
She closed the journal and tucked it back into her robes.
I need to watch him more closely.
If Ronan was another transmigrator, he was dangerous. He’d know the story’s structure, the major events, the character arcs.
Even if he didn’t he would be dangerous solely because he was an unpredictable factor.
She had been sent here for a reason. That much she understood.
Someone or something had sent here her for a purpose, and Grace knew how this story ended. She knew the ending she had planned for these character – her characters.
And it was not a happy one.
She was going to rewrite that ending.
But what if Ronan was trying to do the same...?
I need to figure out what he wants.
