Evil, demonic energy pressed down on her, and her knees lost strength. She crumbled on the spot, her knees hitting the cold floor.

That wasn’t mana.

The energy pressing down on her. It was evil. It almost felt... demonic.

No... that couldn’t be. Demons weren’t supposed to be in human territory. There was simply no way.

But as the malevolent energy emitting from her classmate, Aura Acheron, pressed down on her, Freya Lockhart couldn’t think of any other explanation.

She had killed her assassins.

The courtyard went silent.

No one moved.

"Aura," the man said. "Ease up. You’re scaring her. Humans at certain stages cannot handle the effects of demonic energy well."

The crushing, evil sensation on her shoulders suddenly subsided, and Freya took a deep breath of air.

S-So it was demonic energy. Rank 2 Aura Acheron is a demon?

"You," Aura said. "Stand back up. I have not killed your allies. Worry not."

But Freya didn’t look up. Her chest was pounding.

"Look what you did," the masked man said. "You scared her. How is she supposed to trust us now?"

Trust? They were talking about trust?!

Aura Acheron simply clicked her tongue.

No, Freya thought. They haven’t killed me yet. That means this masked man... he needs me for something. Get back up, Freya! This amount of fear is nothing compared to what awaits!

Easier said than done, however.

Freya grit her teeth and forced herself up. Her chest was pounding, and her hands were shaking, but she steadied her gaze and looked straight at the rabbit-masked man.

"What..." Freya began. "What do you want from me?"

"Finally, ready to talk?" The man said.

He didn’t sound angry.

"If you think I’m upset at you for bringing these guys," the man said, gesturing to her unconscious assassins. "You are mistaken. Honestly, I’m quite happy I was right about you. You’re not stupid enough to come here alone."

Freya nodded hesitantly. She would play along. She wasn’t in control right now; she knew that. Right now, the priority was to get out of here.

"Your note..." Freya started. "You said you were... a potential ally of the branch family, is that correct?"

"That depends on you."

"Depends on... me?"

"That’s correct," the man said.

It was only now that Freya realized how eerie his innocent-looking rabbit mask looked.

"So can I assume you didn’t call me here to make me your pawn?" She asked.

"Of course not. People aren’t chess pieces."

"I see," Freya muttered. "Are you proposing an alliance?"

"You’re smart."

"Why me?"

"Why you?" the man tilted his head. "Because you’re capable."

Freya’s eyes narrowed. "That’s vague. You could say that about numerous people in the academy."

"Not like you." The man sounded pleased. "You don’t wait. You don’t hesitate. You don’t second-guess."

He paused.

"But most importantly, you have ambition. You have an unyielding will to achieve your goal."

"Then wouldn’t it be wise to try and control me?" She rebuked.

"You act as if I do not know you, Freya Lockhart," the man said, his voice mirthful. "If I tried to control you, you would betray me at the first chance you got."

Freya internally scoffed. He didn’t know her. Nobody knew her.

"And you don’t think I will do so if we are allies?"

"I do not," he said simply. "You are trying to do everything alone. Gathering pawns, raising your reputation, becoming a powerful mage, gathering information... plotting Iris Lockhart’s death."

Freya’s eyes widened. He knew.

"How–"

"But you’ll find that having an ally that can help you from behind the scenes will be beneficial. Beneficial to me, and certainly beneficial to you."

"You sound certain."

"You could say that," the man said. "After all, look at my pet demon here. She loves working with me, and we are equal allies."

Aura Acheron shot him a violent, bloodthirsty glare at his joke, but she did not say anything, understanding the situation.

He can joke in a situation like this? Freya thought.

"But you still seem skeptical," the man said. "So let me give you something you’ll surely find useful."

The man stopped, and he pulled out a piece of paper from his back pocket. He scribbled something on the paper and then extended his hand out to her.

She grabbed the piece of paper, but didn’t open it up to read it just yet.

"The information may seem incomplete, but there is a semblance of truth in it," the man said. "Investigate thoroughly. When you find out I’m right, come talk to Aura. She will tell you what you need to know."

Freya gripped the paper slightly.

"That’s all for today," the rabbit man said. He turned around and started walking towards the exit of the courtyard. "Here’s to a long, fruitful friendship, Freya Lockhart."

Aura glanced back at Freya one more time before she followed behind him.

The air turned heavy, and Freya was left alone in the courtyard, her three assassins knocked out next to the fountain.

After what felt like minutes, Freya finally let out a breath of relief.

She’d survived. That was the important part. But that was not due to any effort of her own. That man... he didn’t plan on killing her in the first place.

Freya slowly unfolded the sheet of paper he handed her.

But when she saw the contents of the message, her heart came to a stop.

Her fingers gripped the note, and she grit her teeth.

Delay your plan against Iris Lockhart. She currently has a powerful ally that will thwart your plans and set you back multiple steps. Wait until after the inter-class war, which will be announced in a week’s time. I will assist you when that time comes.

So he knew about my plans, Freya thought sharply. It wasn’t a massive surprise considering what he had already known, but still unpleasant nonetheless.

And what was this inter-class war he spoke of? He claimed it would be announced in a week’s time, but even with her massive web of information, she had never heard of this.

Insider information? She thought.

She knew, of course, that the Ravencrest family had a large influence on the Academy’s structure. It was very possible this person was among the Ravencrest family, which narrowed things down.

She knew he was a student at the school from the way he had spoken and the information he had just provided her.

No... not just the Ravencrest, she thought. He could be an ally. The Ashbourne family and a few minor noble families have deep ties with them. But one thing is certain: the Ravencrest family is somehow involved in this.

Freya gripped the note in her hand, and it burst into flames.

She looked down coldly at the unconscious assassins.

They knew far too much.

First, she would have to deal with them.
