Transmigrated as the Villain: I Will Destroy Fate

Freya Lockhart was never the type to dwell on issues.

She was someone who prided herself on taking action. Dwelling on things only made them more difficult to come to terms with. If one wanted to change the reality of a situation, they had to take action.

Freya internally clicked her tongue as she got out of the shower. Beads of water dripped down her mature figure, and she sat down on her bed.

She should have been feeling calm right now, maybe even satisfied. Her plans were going smoothly, and she had acquired an... ally amongst the third years. He was a bumbling fool, worried about how people saw him. Too worried about disappointing his family.

Idiots like that were easy to control. A few carefully chosen words, and he signed a contract with her that essentially gave his life away.

Everything was going as it should.

So why was she feeling so much unease?

Freya clicked her tongue as she took out a piece of paper she had stashed away.

It was a letter that she had gotten a few days ago. It was placed on her desk at the beginning of the week, and it was there when she woke up.

Someone had managed to sneak into her room while she was asleep and deliver her this... note.

She opened up the note again to read the contents inside for what felt like the millionth time this week.

Your cousin’s condition deteriorated rather quickly that winter.

The timing was precise, and you handled it well. Power struggles are difficult.

We should talk.

Meet me at the old courtyard behind the east wing at the end of the week. It is currently unmonitored by the academy, but I’m sure you already know that.

Come alone. It would be better for both of us if you did.

Her cousin’s death.

This person somehow... knew.

It wasn’t something she wanted to do. But her cousin had been incompetent to say the least. She was first in line to take over the branch family, and if left unchecked, she would lead the family into ruin.

Under no circumstances could someone like that be allowed to lead the branch family.

So after great hesitation, 13-year-old Freya poisoned her and framed it on her cousin’s most loyal maid.

It was terrible. It was cruel. Freya knew that, she knew that when she was 13, and she knew it now.

But that did not mean it didn’t have to be done. It simply did. If the branch family would rise to greater heights in the future – and if her siblings were going to have a future – sacrifices like those were inevitable.

But Freya was not careless. She covered her tracks thoroughly, so much so that even after a full investigation, nothing led back to her.

So how did this person know?

It wasn’t just the knowledge that unsettled her. It was the certainty. The tone of someone who had already seen everything.

And this person had asked her to come alone.

A trap? It was something she had to consider.

But for all she knew, the idea that it was a bluff was also very feasible. An educated guess based on existing power dynamics. Some people had obviously suspected Freya for a while in the beginning, but those suspicions died down quickly.

The idea of it being a bluff wasn’t off the table.

That didn’t mean she could afford to be sloppy, however. It was currently the end of the week. That meant that she would have to either meet this person today or have an unknown variable walking around.

The decision was simple.

Freya exhaled slightly.

Trap or not, it did not matter. She would go. Freya had subconsciously decided that the moment she had gotten the note.

There wasn’t much of a choice, and the sender made sure she knew that from how they had phrased it.

She raised her slender hand and pressed her opposite finger against the golden ring on her index. Hidden across the academy, several hidden figures shifted and stirred, awaiting her signal.

The figure had said to come alone, but Freya knew better than that. Was she so foolish to abide by the rules of a figure she did not know the identity of? 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Freya stood up suddenly and spoke in a soft, delicate voice right into her ring.

"Be silent. I will head to the old courtyard behind the east wing in an hour’s time. Three of you will follow me."

They were assassins from the upper years. Powerful, deadly, trained assassins that she had picked up prior to attending the academy. No one knew of them; only a select few allies in her family knew about them.

Freya lowered her slender hand. The message had been sent, and now all she had to do is wait. Midnight was only an hour away, yet it felt like she was having to wait an eternity.

Despite herself, anxiety crept in. She did not know who this person was, why they had contacted her, and most importantly, how they knew about her past crimes involving her cousin. Even though she was human, and feelings like anxiety, unease, and indecision creeped in her mind like a thin crack spreading through glass.

But Freya squashed those feelings as quickly as they came. This was not an unfamiliar feeling. Throughout her life, ever since that day when she had made the decision to kill her dear cousin, she had done numerous things that people would consider vile. Unforgivable, even. Even Freya would not disagree.

But Freya knew the main family’s plans for the branch family. She knew of their plans for Iris, her other cousin. She knew her sister and her brother’s place in those plans.

So she could not rest. She could not falter. She could not regret.

She simply needed to keep moving forward.

After all, that was the path she had chosen.
