Granny Mae frowned, displeased by Auntie Sterling’s attitude.

"Sigh..." She sighed and shook her head. "Jewel, this is rather disappointing."

Auntie Sterling cursed inwardly. ’Damn old hag! Didn’t you promise to keep my secret? Why are you backing out now?’

She forced a sycophantic smile. "Auntie Mayer, you must be joking. Please, clear things up with Miss Dawson so she doesn’t get the wrong idea."

Granny Mae’s sunken, cloudy eyes stared at her, her tone growing stern. "Jewel, Yuna is giving you a chance. You should just confess on your own!"

Ms. Dawson: "..."

’I have no intention of giving Auntie Sterling a chance.’

Auntie Sterling refused to admit anything, laughing hollowly. "Auntie Mayer, I really don’t know what you’re talking about."

Granny Mae couldn’t believe how stubborn Auntie Sterling was being!

She shook her head in disappointment and glanced at her granddaughter.

Ms. Dawson got the message. She strode up to Auntie Sterling, fighting the urge to slap her. "Julia Sterling," she said coldly, "you made my grandmother fall down the stairs and then forced her to keep it a secret. Have you no shame?"

Auntie Sterling gritted her teeth and glared daggers at Granny Mae. "Auntie Mayer, you went back on your word! You promised you’d keep my secret!"

"You took my money but didn’t help me feed the little ones. You have no conscience, so I’m not helping you anymore," Granny Mae said in a huff, lowering her head to stroke the cats’ and dogs’ heads.

"So you admit it?" Ms. Dawson shot her a disgusted look. "Why did you push my grandmother down the stairs?"

"I didn’t push her on purpose. If you have to blame someone, blame her for being unsteady on her feet," Auntie Sterling said, jutting out her chin self-righteously. "Besides, it wasn’t a serious fall, was it? She’ll be fine in a few days."

"Fine in a few days? She’s almost eighty! For someone her age, a fall can be life-threatening! Do you have any conscience at all?" Ms. Dawson’s face was livid as she pointed a finger at her. "You just wait. The Dawson family isn’t finished with you."

"What do you mean?" Auntie Sterling asked suspiciously. "What are you going to do?"

"You’ll find out. Now get out." Ms. Dawson didn’t want to waste any more breath on her; she was planning to sue.

"What does that mean?" Auntie Sterling pressed. "Tell me!"

Ms. Dawson rolled her eyes, pointed at the front door, and enunciated each word. "Get. Out."

Auntie Sterling’s face fell. "You’re firing me?"

"Isn’t it obvious?"

"Fine. Settle this month’s wages with me." Auntie Sterling held out her hand, her expression a mask of greed. "You’re the one firing me without notice, so you have to pay me for the full month, plus another month’s salary as compensation."

"Get out," Ms. Dawson said in a low voice. "Don’t make me slap you."

A hint of fear entered Auntie Sterling’s eyes. She gritted her teeth. "Then transfer the money to my account. If you dare to withhold my pay, I’ll report you to the labor board!"

"So you know about the labor board." Ms. Dawson scoffed and pointed toward the door. "Get out. Sue me."

As she was leaving, Auntie Sterling shot another glare at Granny Mae, muttering under her breath, "Damn old hag, why didn’t you just fall and die!"

Hearing her curse Granny Mae, Goldie instantly tensed up. Its floppy ears shot up, its black eyes narrowed to slits, and a low growl rumbled in its throat. "WOOF! You wicked person, how dare you say bad things about Granny Mae!"

It bared its sharp teeth, its back arching as it tensed. Then, its hind legs kicked off the ground, and it shot forward like a gust of wind.

Goldie’s front paws slammed hard onto Auntie Sterling’s back.

With a yelp, Auntie Sterling stumbled and crashed to the floor. Her knees slammed hard against the tiles, and she sucked in a sharp breath as her face twisted in pain.

Goldie stood on her back, barking ferociously. "Bad person! You wicked person! Granny Mae is so good, how dare you speak ill of her!"

Seeing this, the other cats and dogs swarmed over to stand up for Granny Mae.

"WOOF WOOF! You stink, Auntie Webb! Who said you could bully Granny Mae!"

"MEOW~ Don’t you dare bully Granny!"

"..."

Goldie quickly reminded them, "WOOF! Everyone, no biting!"

The little ones didn’t bite Auntie Sterling. They just batted and kicked at her with their paws. One mischievous dog even peed right on her head.

"You damned little beasts!" Auntie Sterling shrieked, scrambling to her feet and stumbling out the door.

Granny Mae watched the scene unfold, stunned.

Renee Jennings spoke up at the perfect moment. "Granny Mae, the little ones are standing up for you."

Granny Mae looked at them, her sunken eyes glistening with tears. Deeply moved, she said with a catch in her voice, "They’re all such good children. Their hearts are every bit as good as any person’s."

"No kidding," Ms. Dawson said grimly. "Julia Sterling is worse than a dog."

Granny Mae wiped the corner of her eye. "Yuna, I won’t ask what you plan to do about Jewel, but I do have a request."

"What is it?" Ms. Dawson asked.

With a trembling hand, Granny Mae pointed to the cats and dogs. "Could I... could I keep them?"

The Dawson family had never kept cats or dogs because Granny Mae’s late husband had been extremely allergic. He would start sneezing uncontrollably if he came into contact with even a little bit of fur.

Every time she came home from feeding the strays, she had to take a shower and change her clothes immediately.

Her husband had passed away three years ago.

Because of her grandfather, Ms. Dawson had always kept her distance from cats and dogs. But after witnessing them protect her grandmother and help punish Auntie Sterling, she was starting to find them rather cute.

She nodded. "Alright, we can keep them. But we should ask if they want to stay."

Hearing her granddaughter’s approval, a flicker of joy crossed Granny Mae’s wrinkled face.

She instinctively looked toward Renee Jennings and asked in a gentle voice, "Young lady, could you ask them for me? Ask if they’d be willing to stay with me."

Before Renee Jennings could even ask, a chorus of excited barks and meows erupted.

"WOOF WOOF WOOF! We want to! We really want to!"

"WOOF! We love Granny Mae! We want to stay!"

"MEOW MEOW MEOW~ This is great! This is great! I can stay with Granny Mae forever!"

"..."

A gentle smile bloomed in Renee Jennings’s eyes as her lips curved upward. "Granny Mae," she said slowly, "did you hear them? They would love to stay with you."

Granny Mae beamed, unable to contain her smile. "That’s wonderful! Just wonderful!"

Ms. Dawson made a phone call and asked two people to come over and look after Granny Mae for the time being.

The two must have been nearby, because they arrived very quickly.

Ms. Dawson gave them some instructions, then turned back to Renee Jennings and her friends, her serious expression replaced by an apologetic smile. "I’m so sorry to have kept you all waiting. We can go for that milk tea now."
