Benign was certain this was his first time transmigrating, but the words of the Elf Chief made him question himself.
BAM.
Tall, slender elves broke through the door. Green markings curled over their pale skin, and their bodies were the hardened physique of warriors.
Benign stared with a scoff in his throat. ’So much for the delicate, pretty elves in fantasy novels.’
Every pair of eyes snapped toward Benign— the stranger standing over their chief and his daughter.
The tallest elf pointed at Benign. "Seize him!"
Benign reached for the gun in his belt.
"Stop! All of you!" The elf girl shouted.
They all froze.
The old elf still shivered from shock, and his daughter carefully rested him on the wall. "That is my father’s guest. Don’t dare show disrespect."
"Guest?" The tallest elf repeated. He scanned Benign from head to toe, as if checking if he was worthy. "My Lady, what is he? Human?"
Benign’s ears pricked up at the human. ’So they know about humans here? I thought it was just fantasy creatures?’
The elf girl held her weapon. "I suppose. But he is also a member of the protectors of the realms."
The men gasped, stepping away from Benign, who stepped backward as well. The elf girl smiled, turning to him. "Right now, he just saved our chief from glitching. What do you make of that? He’s special, isn’t he?"
The men quieted down and turned to their chief. "Glitch? How are you feeling, Chief? Did he really...?"
The chief breathed slowly. Most of his composure had returned to him. He nodded and spoke. "He is a strange man, but he did save me."
The murmuring increased, and the elf women standing behind the men tried to stand on their toes to look over. Some children stared at the guest in an admiring way, while some looked suspicious of him.
Benign endured dozens of curious states and stood there like a rare spectacle. Their lingering gazes pricked at a self-consciousness he buried years ago.
He adjusted his stance and turned away from the crowd.
"Nana, take him to rest. He’s had a long day." The elf girl ordered when her people were calm. "Also get Stun and Vergil. Hurry."
A girl jumped, raising a hand from behind the tall elf men. "Yes, my lady! Right on it!" She waved her hand. "Good, sir. This way."
The elf men didn’t move away for the girl. They only parted ways when Benign walked towards the door.
The girl stood at exactly five feet with hair all over her face. "Here, let me carry that for you." Her hands moved fast, grabbing the revolver at his waist. "This way, sir."
Benign felt for the weapon in his belt. Nothing. His jaw dropped as he watched her hop away into the village, leaving him armless with only a sickle. ’These elves can be dangerous.’
His eyes darted left to right as he moved into the village, but his shoulders loosened when he found that his resting place was beside a playground for elf children.
’That’s why she took my gun, huh?’
The children separated as if he carried the plague and gathered again after he passed. The piercing glares they gave him felt more dangerous than anything he could’ve done with a gun.
In front, there was a sizable hut attached to a large tree offering shade. The insides looked warm enough and mostly empty. There were no suspicious windows or cameras either. He breathed out.
"Thank you." He told the girl who remained by the door as he walked in..
"Welcome, sir."
The girl left him in the hut with a promise of a meal and his weapon returned. Benign fell on the bed, his muscles expanding and tension melting from his body. "Now, Lego." He rolled to his side. "Would it kill you to tip me off accurately?"
[I have never guided you wrong.]
[Also, you ordered, ’Don’t worry and relax.’]
Benign grunted. His system needed a vacation. It seemed it had been guiding hosts for so long that it went insane.
"Also, what did that old chief mean by what he said? Have I been here before?"
[Do you remember being here before, Host?]
Benign left where he rested. There was something about Lego’s tone that made him worried, like it was speaking with emotion again. "No, I don’t, because I haven’t."
[Then...]
[Take the words of the chief as delirious mumblings.]
From Benign’s experience with his higher-ups, that was code for ’don’t ask about it again.’ "You don’t know? Or are you keeping a secret from me?"
[Benign Cross has never existed within Noria, Karnak, and Olien before.]
[I am certain.]
Benign fell back on the bed, spreading his hands. "That’s fine then. I guess the glitches have a way of messing with the brain."
[It does.]
The room fell silent. Keeping his revolver under his head, Benign drifted off to sleep.
—
Blocking his midday sun, an eight-foot figure loomed over Benign’s six-foot frame. Squinting his eyes, Benign made out the face of an elf, and an axe hung over the elf’s shoulders. He yawned and rubbed his eyes, which were still too dizzy to register anything as a threat.
’Also, LEG didn’t pop up with a new mission. I must be seeing things.’
A few minutes ago, he had been asleep, woken up by a knock on the door. Seeing the elf girl and her father some steps away from the door reminded him of his current situation.
A steel rod was pushed into his hand. He looked down at it, and his eyes widened.
He turned to the elf girl who had brought him into the village. "Excuse me?" He asked calmly. It should be too early for any of that.
The girl didn’t meet his gaze, looking only at the giant beside her. "He wants to duel with you as a protector of the realms," she explained. "He had never fought with a Protector before."
She stepped away to reveal the man behind her.
But the man had been blocking the sun, so Benign certainly knew they were there. Like the warriors he saw earlier, green marks curled around his tanned skin, rising to his neck like a choker.
The elf grunted, possibly as a greeting.
Benign nodded once in response. He gripped the weapon.
He had no idea that protectors of the realms existed here, or that they usually fought with people built like trees to prove themselves.
’What have we learned from this, Benign? Never tell a lie.’
