The Last Legendary System

Chapter 3: First Kill

Benign slowly rose from his kneeling position.

By his right was a sea of sand and dead bodies, while on his left, a creature with a gun.

The creature pointed the revolver at him, but Benign stood still. The revolver was too far away to be a serious threat. That was no sniper or even a rifle.

"What are you—"

BANG!

The bullet grazed his right arm. Benign let go of the man’s hand he had been holding, and started a sprint down the other dune.

He couldn’t hear the creature chasing him, but he heard their shooting and knew they were coming.

"To activate my skill, I need what?"

[To be alive.]

"NO SHIT!"

Another shot cracked past him, and he slid to a stop and faced the creature. He hadn’t done anything to be marked.

’Is it the way of this realm? Kill whatever you see?’

He glanced back at the man he had spoken to. ’It might be the way of this place. Shooting down a weak person. Am I even allowed to kill?’

He wouldn’t hesitate, but he was brought here as a savior to balance and restore.

’Or did my savior complex conclude that?’

The creature looked nothing like an elf or a man, so Benign concluded that it might be a glitched man who lost his mind. Another bullet grazed his elbow.

He frowned and touched his bleeding arm. "You are just picking a fight, aren’t you? And what’s with those lousy aims?"

[Mission Alert!]

"Perfect timing."

[Mission: Hug Olienian Dragon to activate first skill.]

"Fuck you. And that creature is a lizard."

[Error.]

[Mission: Eliminate Olienian Dragon to activate first skill.]

[Reward: First Unique Skill.]

A calm smile spread across Benign’s face. "Eliminate. Finally, a word I understand."

He locked eyes with the creature as it got closer. It was more of a lizard-man than a fish, as he had earlier thought. Or dragon, as his incoherent partner implied. It pointed the revolver at him again and said something, but he didn’t understand.

"Don’t worry," Benign waved. "I’d give you quick lessons on aiming. You’re welcome."

The creature sprayed bullets. Benign shifted his shoulders. One bullet tore through the air where his head had been. Another buried itself in the sand behind him. He could easily tell where they would hit.

The revolver intrigued him, though it probably wasn’t called that in this realm.

Each hit didn’t seem lethal, and he questioned what would happen if it did hit him squarely. But he didn’t plan to do anything with curiosity until he had handled the problem.

He got closer and swiped an uppercut at the creature, held its arms, and bent the wrist. The revolver dropped. It seemed the creature had no basic combat skills. Good enough.

"I’m keeping the weapon. No arguments there." He spotted a sickle on the creature’s waist.

Morality flickered in his mind as he was about to kill a weak and defenseless creature. But his fast adaptability, honed with merciless acts on the battlefield, steeled his resolve. "If you’re the unfortunate one, then I’d pay for my sins someday."

He grabbed the sickle and stabbed it at the creature’s throat. "Sorry, bro."

The creature let out a wet, gurgling cry. Benign released it.

The creature held its throat, choking on its blood and staggering back.

Benign distanced himself from it, feeling a burning sensation in his hands as its green hot blood splashed on him. He shook it off, hissing.

He grabbed the revolver and shot at its neck thrice. It lost its footing and tumbled down the dune. When it stopped, it didn’t move, and green liquid oozed out of its neck.

Benign stared at the creature, waiting three seconds until the creature stopped twitching. "Confirmed," he muttered to himself.

He picked up the revolver. "It looks like a revolver, but it has a wider range."

He picked the sickle. It had a triangular shape rather than the normally curvy sickles in his world. "Well, weapons acquired. Start the activation of the skills. I need to heal."

He wiped the blood off his uniform.

[Death of Creature Icarus, Olienian Dragon, confirmed.]

[SP (Survival Points) +10]

[Reward Granted]

Benign hummed. "He truly wasn’t from Noria. Where is that?"

[It is among the three realms currently clashing: Noria, home to ancient magic and elves. Olien, home to unconventional technology and births. Karnak, home to mythical beasts and werecreatures.]

[The injured man was a Karnak citizen in his human form. The Olienian dragon is from Olien.]

[Current Location: Noria. Home of elves. And it is the most hostile of all realms, and especially toxic to foreigners."

Benign turned back to the sea of bodies, trying to imagine them in any other form than human. "So Noria killed these warriors?"

[Olien did. The realms are always at battle with each other since a turning event, Ragnasenso.]

[The bodies came to Noria, but the elves abandoned the bodies and the victims outside their kingdom.]

"Cold, but practical."

If the Noria people didn’t understand the glitches, they could presume it was contagious. The government of his ’realm’ would’ve burned the bodies to avoid an outbreak.

He let out a deep breath. "In summary, restore balance. Anyhow. Save these realms the headaches. Stop glitches."

[Precisely.]

"Typical."

Another mission within hostile nations.

Another mission that threatens the lives of innocents and removes autonomy from people.

"I’m in."

[Of course, you are. You are already registered as. Legacy System.]

A line formed on Benign’s forehead. "Really?"

His hands hooked on his waist. "So that has already been decided, huh? Now that I think of it, I never signed a contract or anything. What happens if I die?"

[You die.]

Benign scoffed, bringing his hands to lay on his chest. "You are even worse than the systems in those web novels. Less competent too."

[You have survived for less than an hour.]

[Performance review seems premature.]

"Well, in your grand incoherence, you couldn’t give me a Revival skill. Isn’t it finished for me if I die?" He shook his head. "To make a soldier willing to give their life for a cause, you need to make the cause worth it and the benefit enticing."

Raising his head to the skies, Benign judged.

"You did neither." He scoffed again. "The guts to call yourself a legacy system. Fancy word with nothing to prove."

He lowered his gaze. "And I am stuck with that incompetency. For life."

Silence stretched between them.

A screen flashed in front of Benign.

[Are you done?]

The line on Benign’s forehead tripled.

"Yes," he said begrudgingly. He needed that moment. There was no ’un-transmigrating’ in those web novels. At least, not until the mission had been solved.

[Now, back to the mission.]

[Your reward is available.]

At the sound of that, Benign’s expression brightened. His hands dropped from his chest. "Show me."
