After looking over the profile twice, Benign was convinced he had really not read as many webnovels as he had thought.
"Are Tristab and Trobuct the weapons in my hands?"
[Yes.]
He looked down at the sickle and the revolver he took from his last kill. "I see." He looked up at the profile again.
Having no luck didn’t surprise him with the type of system he got, but he didn’t understand why the other attributes were more than 100.
’Hopefully that isn’t a glitch, and it will benefit me later.’
He looked down at the last few lines, then dismissed the profile. "My class means that I only get unique skills, but how often will there be unique skills? Also..." he raised his injured hand.
If his memory served him right, his first basic skill, Regeneration, should heal him without consciously triggering it.
"My regeneration skill hasn’t been activated."
[It is Lv 1. It wouldn’t happen quickly.]
[You have to max out its five levels before you meet a worthy opponent again.]
Benign scoffed. If by worthy opponent, his system meant an ancient dragon trapped in a lizard’s body, then the situation looked hopeful.
[Complete two more missions to upgrade to Lv. 2.]
[Host, you really have to grow quickly.]
Benign inhaled and exhaled. "Go on. What first move do you advise?"
[Recovering the Primordial Core. It balances the realms and stops the glitches.]
[Afterward, convince the gods to resume their duty of sustaining the Primordial Core, or else the realms would inevitably clash again.]
Benign nodded slowly, taking everything in.
He had to start with Noria and survive. Stop the wars between the realms, then start looking for some core before searching for its caretakers. Somehow, everything sounded familiar.
"Do I have a time limit?"
[As long as you are alive, and the core doesn’t get permanently destroyed.]
In other words, as soon as possible.
"That Primordial Core, if it is worth sustaining, the gods wouldn’t have tossed it aside."
Benign felt a spasm at the back of his head. He smirked, feeling genuine amusement since he arrived. "Did that upset you? Are you linked to the Primordial Core somehow?"
[...]
He waved in dismissal. "You don’t need to answer. I’d handle it anyway. I survived three wars, with seven years of experience, and am young enough for new ones."
He looked back at the aftermath of Hell’s Rain. The balls cooled into lava rocks, making the area resemble a river of igneous stone. The skies were already close.
"Hmm, that skill isn’t a skill I can use in one-on-one combat at all." He folded his arms and shook his head. "It even threatened to kill me. How can I get more skills with different ranges?"
[Complete missions. Missions pop up when there’s a threat to your life or to find the core.]
"Only?"
[They also pop up when there’s an ally you need to acquire or to move your mission forward.]
Benign dabbed his shirt with his gloved hands. He had sweated a ton within the last ten minutes. "When can I select the skill I want?"
[You gain SPs to buy skills too. But right now, they are not available.]
He paused, tilting his head. ’Available?’ That wasn’t a good thing. There really shouldn’t be something like that.
[Alert! Novice Package Available.]
[Integrate Novice Package - Passive: Language Comprehension (Lv. 1) and Spatial Storage?]
"Always."
Benign felt a lightness in his hand. A simple black ring materialized on his finger. He focused on the sickle at his waist. Quickly, it vanished into the void.
"Convenient," he muttered. "No more carrying things around."
"By the way, this has been bothering me." He changed the topic, continuing away from the ruin of Hell Rain. "Could you sound more human? Maybe change your voice settings to something more familiar."
Hearing him talk for a long time made him realize he wanted a change.
[Like your comrade Kendrick’s?]
’Why that one?’ He only mentioned him once. "No. Just a male voice. I want to forgo the past."
[Any preference?]
"Do you have one for someone competent?"
[Error.]
"What?"
[Understood.]
But Benign regretted it the next second as his system went through numerous voices: an old lady, a young child, a Vocaloid, and then a rodent. It finally settled on one after a minute of pronouncing ’Benign Crocs’.
[Voice settings changed.]
The soldier shrugged. The robot now sounded like a man in his thirties. Easily someone he’d take advice from.
"Speak informally, too. You are the first member of my unit. Do you have a name?"
[It is LEG 101.]
"That’s a mouthful. We’ll stick to Lego. You also butcher my name anyway"
[...]
[Alert!]
[Mission: Recruit Elf Empress!]
Benign cracked his knuckles. "Okay, let’s start venturing."
He needed to find a village — or someone sane — in this desert to rest, gather food, and obtain more information.
He was also inexplicably hungry after all that running, and the exhaustion made it harder to stand. Heat mirages almost got to him.
"To the land of the notorious elves, it is."
[You are already in their land.]
"Then to meet the Elf Empress, it is."
The desert was simple to navigate. There were no harsh winds, sinking sands, or anything outrageous like the deserts of his world.
Within hours, he had walked a good distance toward a possible sanctuary. He could tell... or hope.
By dusk, he finally sighted a small shack, and by its side stood the figure of a lady, gallant at the entrance. He stared at her for a long time as his eyes slowly processed the sight.
"Is that the elf girl?"
[Use your eyes, Host.]
Benign rolled his tired eyes. The machine didn’t gain empathy despite sounding more human.
He squinted at the elf now facing him, holding her steel rod tightly. She didn’t look like a warrior. Her skin was pale, and her hands bore no scars from battle.
Her simple clothes were certainly no armour—just a short dress humans would wear to a club. She was tall, and her hair was a colorful mix of pink with blonde streaks.
He strolled toward her with his last streaks of confidence and hope entangled together. "She’s kind of pretty," he muttered after closer observation. "Hopefully less murderous than the last thing I met."
Her ears were pointy as expected, but her eyes were deep purple, giving her an otherworldly look. He was out of his world anyway.
He kept his weapons behind him to avoid scaring her or appearing threatening. "I come in peace, young elf," Benign said as he raised his arms and approached. "I am but a humble wanderer looking for a place to rest."
He expected confusion to flash in her eyes, but anger flared instead. Her lips curved down in disgust.
He arched his brows.
"This isn’t a place that can be a sanctuary for beggars," she said flatly. "Scram."
Benign dropped his arms, processing her words. He could understand her thanks to his skills, but why did those harsh words have to be the first he’d understand?
"I said scram, or I’ll kill you," she continued, gesturing in a shooing motion.
Elves were friendly in those novels, and even if Noria was the least friendly, this felt excessive. ’She clearly hasn’t met a human before.’
Benign reached for the gun behind him.
"Care to say that again?"
