Benign sighed, looking up at no one in particular. ’My luck getting transmigrated and being stuck with this guy.’
He stared down at the creature, Icarus. It must be the absurd births biologically engineered by Olien. The creature was neither man, nor lizard, nor fish. It was especially far from being a dragon.
Shaking off the uncertainty of going forward, Benign continued down the dune. There was nothing for miles. Just vast brown sand stretching and occasionally rising to form dunes. The shifting sand under his boots had begun to wear on him.
"When will I see the elf girl, by the way—"
RUMMMBLE...
Benign held the sickle in an attack stance, keeping his balance and his eyes sharpened. Not only was the ground he stood on vibrating, but also two dunes ahead shook.
Blurry figures approached quickly.
"What is that?"
[Use your eyes, Benign]
Benign peered ahead, using a hand to cover his eyes from the sun. All he saw were tongues flapping about, and the creatures running to him were similar to the hostile, but he didn’t remember the first hostile making a sound in the sand as it ran. These caused vibrations.
"They’re here for revenge."
And all he had was a sickle and a revolver, with his sides slowly bleeding.
He slid down the dune and made his way towards the dead army, where weapons lay.
Something slammed his body, and he nearly lost his balance. He swung the sickle behind him, slashing the one incoming. A green tongue fell by his feet, shaking like a worm.
"From that distance? These lizards..." He looked at his hands and saw a mark from the one that hit him. He had definitely been marked.
A dozen of them charged towards him with a sickle at their waist and clawed hands. He reached the sea of dead soldiers and clutched the first weapon he saw.
"Why!"
He reached for another weapon, but like the first, it didn’t come off the ground. They were all stuck in the sand. He fired at the sand, but it didn’t budge.
He stopped firing to save bullets, as he had no idea how many bullets he had, and continued running through the sea of dead bodies.
"Damn it. I just got here, and these things want to kill me?"
[You killed one of them. As per your principles, wouldn’t you avenge any death against your unit?]
"You said I could kill it!"
He turned to the creatures, and they weren’t chasing him any longer. They stopped at the beginning of the sea of dead bodies, specifically at the bird-like creatures, and snarled at him. Were they scared of dead bird-like creatures?
"Go back. They might wake up."
The biggest of the dozen hissed at him, waving his arms in a ’threatening’ motion. It said some words, but Benign didn’t understand them.
He shook his head. "Imagine getting shot by a lizard and then getting cursed at by his older brother later. This is shit."
[Alert! Unique Skill Loaded.]
He looked at his bleeding elbow. He had experienced worse, but in this new place, he’d prefer having fewer injuries. "Okay, we’ll be trying it pronto. We have test subjects with us."
[Hell’s Rain has successfully integrated with you.]
He nodded at the name of the skill, and his eyes swept over the sea of dead bodies. Seeing the men lying side by side, some holding each other, made him reminisce about his first war and how he mourned when his comrades had been killed.
"I don’t have the time, but I’d like to bury all these bodies along with the hostiles. Burial by fire will be sufficient, yes?"
[Burial by fire will be sufficient.]
"Let’s do it." His eyes scanned the area where the majority of the bodies lay. "I have to measure the target area and calculate possible impact..." He paused. Just as his eyes moved above him, he sighted a figure in the air. He had been spotted, but it wasn’t by lizard men.
"An elf... girl?"
She floated in the air, hiding behind a cloud. Her eyes glowed deeply from the distance, and they were the most pronounced feature he saw. He stared at her longer than he should have, and then the blue screen popped up in front of him.
[Commencing... Hell Rain]
"I hope she’s not a hostile," he muttered to himself, just as another screen popped up.
[Hell Rain... Level One... 20%]
A bright ray of sun pierced through the clouds. More rays made patches in the sky. Their intensity increased, and under the rays, they formed massive, scorching balls of heat that stayed above the ground, then descended.

[Commenced.]
[Mission Alert!]
[Seek Shelter. Heat can rise to scalding limits]
"Don’t worry, I can handle a little—" Benign didn’t complete his words before he started a sprint away from the bodies. Instincts took over his body, and the familiar sting of a death flag pricked him.
The sun rays parted more parts of the sky, far more than he had bargained for.
"Did I make a miscalculation? It should’ve only barraged the area I wanted it to."
[Mission Alert!]
[Save the Elf Empress from Hell Rain Detonation.]
"What?" Benign kept up his sprint, the sea of bodies slowly becoming the size of a lake behind him. "She is a what? And isn’t she safe up there?"
[Error.]
[Save Glitched Olienian Dragons from Hell Rain Detonation.]
[Error.]
[Save yourself, Benign Crocs.]
"Which one is it?" Benign could guess that the only place to save him from his own undoing was where the sun’s rays didn’t part the sky. He paused, breathing heavily.
This was harder than during the lizard-man chase because it’d truly be shameless to die by his own hand. He resumed the sprint.
[Worry for yourself, Host.]
BOOM!
THUD!!
BOOM! BOOM!
THUD!!
Deafening. Resonating. Benign watched from the distance as balls of fire, the size of a fist, made juddering impacts on the pitiful ground. He could still feel the vibrations from where he stood.
The sea of bodies was merely a puddle now, and more than a mile away, the sun rays had stopped parting the skies. The fire rapidly consumed the corpses and the surface they touched. An intensity that made flesh peel without contact.
This wasn’t a peaceful funeral. It was grand. The lizardmen had been reduced to ash.
"How could such a formidable skill come so easily?"
[Hell Rain. Difficulty: Beginner.]
"Beginner?" He rubbed his hands across his face. "That’s definitely another malfunction."
