Naruto: Rebuilding the Hidden Sand

Sasori had begun preparing for the puppet body transformation long before now, but only recently had he actually started the process.

The puppet core technique was already fully developed and tested. He also understood clearly that to perform at the level the Third Ninja World War would demand, his current physical state was insufficient.

He had announced to everyone that he was conducting puppet research and was not to be disturbed. This included Chiyo. He had set traps around his residence to enforce it, anyone without the means to navigate them couldn’t approach. The windows were sealed. The door stayed shut.

Yuji knocked.

"Come in."

He pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Sasori was seated cross-legged on the floor in a long robe, working on a puppet component with a small tool. The room was dim, filled with sealed scrolls spread across the floor and the assembled collection of his work over the years. The arsenal of a man who had been building toward something for a very long time.

Yuji looked at the hand holding the tool.

The fingers visible beneath the sleeve were not flesh. They were puppet components.

"You’re finished already?"

"Not a complete replacement. Partial, for now." Sasori paused his work and extended the arm fully for inspection, his tone carrying the particular flatness that in him passed for pride.

"Well?"

Yuji studied the construction. The flexibility and precision of the joints were immediately apparent.

"Is that everything?"

"Still refining. But there will be no problems before the war arrives." Sasori returned to his work.

Yuji sat down beside him. He had not come to check on Sasori’s combat readiness, he knew the answer to that already.

He had come because Sasori was, among other things, the one person whose continued existence Yuji had genuine reason to monitor carefully.

From the way Sasori was handling the components, the puppet limbs functioned as natural extensions of his intent, indistinguishable in practical use from what flesh and blood had provided before.

What he was doing now was deepening familiarity, pushing the integration further. Without the limitations of a biological body, many ideas he had been unable to fully implement could now be realized in actual combat. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

The number of puppets he could control simultaneously would increase substantially. The architecture of what he could construct and deploy would expand into territory he hadn’t previously been able to reach.

The image Yuji had in mind was something like a sea of individual moving parts, a transformation of the Puppet Technique that operated at a scale that made the original almost unrecognizable.

"I’m not here to evaluate your progress," Yuji said. "I just wanted to confirm your condition."

"You’re either doubting my technique or your own judgment," Sasori replied, not looking up.

Yuji laughed.

Most of the work Sasori had done, he had done himself. Some of the more complex surgical procedures had required assistance, and Yuji had provided it.

The most critical component, the heart, the nucleus, Sasori had handled entirely alone. He was, in practical terms, half a medical ninja without the formal techniques, his knowledge of anatomy and physiology accumulated through research rather than training but reaching a functional level regardless.

Yuji looked around the room at the puppets lining the walls and felt something slightly complicated move through him.

For Sasori, this transformation was the completion of something he had wanted for a long time. The highest expression of his art. The culmination of everything he had been working toward since childhood.

For Chiyo, who knew none of this, the next time she saw her grandson, he would no longer be what she remembered. That knowledge sat uncomfortably.

"Sasori," Yuji said after a moment. "If one day I could bring your parents back, how would you feel?"

The sound of work stopped.

Sasori turned his head and looked at Yuji without speaking.

"Don’t misunderstand," Yuji said. "I’m not talking about forbidden techniques. I mean something that operates at the level of life itself, allowing them to exist in the world again through that dimension."

Sasori’s eyes went cold.

"Are you saying my art is inferior to yours?"

"I didn’t say that."

"You’ve developed medicine that’s changed how the village operates and given people a new understanding of what a Medical Ninja can be. You’ve elevated the field to another level." Sasori’s voice remained flat.

"I acknowledge that. But in our competitions, you’ve lost more than you’ve won. That doesn’t mean your art has surpassed mine. I will also redefine what the Puppet Technique can become."

The corners of Yuji’s mouth twitched slightly.

"I didn’t mention the competitions."

He hadn’t been making a comparison. He had asked a genuine question and somehow landed in a territorial dispute he hadn’t intended to start. That was Sasori.

The puppet core technique had begun spreading through the village to some degree, Sasori’s designs, mechanisms, and control methods were things other Puppeteers could study and absorb.

That contribution was real and meaningful. But the full scope of what Sasori had developed, including the self-transformation, was simply out of reach for anyone else.

The talent requirements alone were beyond what the village’s current generation of Puppeteers could meet. It challenged the conceptual frameworks most people operated within, and not everyone was equipped to revise those frameworks even when the evidence was directly in front of them.

They talked a while longer before Yuji stood to leave.

"I’ll come back in a couple of days."

Walking out into the street, he moved through a village that felt different from the one he had arrived in years ago. The faces around him were a mix of familiar and unfamiliar, merchants, travelers, residents, people drawn by the pharmaceutical industry’s momentum and the general sense that something had changed here.

The old desolation that had defined Sunagakure’s atmosphere for as long as anyone could remember had lifted.

People greeted him as he passed. Warmly, without any calculation behind it.

He looked at the faces around him and felt something settle quietly in his chest.

This made him feel ... all his efforts had n’t been in vain
