Caleb stepped into the Armorer’s alley at eighteen-forty-five.
Evening changed the Quarter. Morning belonged to recruits and vendors stacking crates. Evening belonged to off-shift Defense Force, drunks, and people who came to Yui’s because Yui’s was the last place in the sector that served a bowl for under a hundred credits and kept the broth honest.
The upper-sector billboards painted the corrugated roofs in a hard pink. The lanterns on the noodle stands were lit. Yui’s pot had been on since fifteen-hundred.
Caleb’s ribs were running warm under his coat.
This was different from the vault warmth: the second-line pulse Tali had named on his bypass two days ago, Soma’s resonance trail, the signal the bypass had been reading since the audit.
Tonight it was reading something else too.
[Hacker: I have you on three cameras. Two more than usual.]
He kept walking.
[Hacker: The kid is at his crate. The zip tie man is at his stall. Yui is at her counter. The boot fixer’s stall is open and you should not look at it yet. Walk to Yui. Order the bowl. We’re talking after.]
Caleb kept walking.
His attention slid to the boot fixer’s stall anyway.
-----
Wrongness sat in what was there.
The boot fixer was at her stall. She was standing behind her counter with both hands flat on the wood. The awl was in her right hand, suspended in the position it had been in when she stopped moving. She wasn’t looking at her work. She was looking at the figure standing beside her stall.
The figure was the size of a man.
It failed at being a man.
The plating on its arms and torso was the plating Caleb had seen on eleven plinths under the city. The marks on the plating were the marks he had been learning to read for three months. Twelve of them. The proportions came out of the vault. Shoulders narrower than the hips. Arms too long. The head set too far forward off the neck.
It was standing where a man would have stood waiting for boots.
It had been there long enough that the boot fixer had stopped noticing it.
-----
The marks under Caleb’s coat went cold.
That was new.
The cold was worse than the heat at the vault had been. The heat at the vault had been kin acknowledging kin. The cold was kin being seen.
His good hand closed around the grip of the phase-dagger inside his jacket.
The blade stayed in the sheath. Drawing it would change the situation in a way he was not ready for.
-----
The kid was at his right.
The kid Caleb had given a credit chit to two days back stood there. Eight, nine years old. Jacket two sizes too big. Dumpling on a stick.
The kid stopped next to him, lifted his face, and opened his mouth.
"You weren’t supposed to be born, Caleb."
Caleb’s own voice came out of the kid’s mouth. Not a copy. His voice. The voice he heard inside his own skull when he read out loud. The voice that came out of his throat when he answered the comm at oh-five-thirty.
The kid said it like he was reading a label off a can.
Then he turned and walked back to his crate.
-----
Yui’s mother appeared at the curtain of the noodle stand. Same voice. Same sentence.
A recruit Caleb did not know stopped at the alley mouth carrying a bag of dumplings.
"You weren’t supposed to be born, Caleb."
The zip tie man’s hands locked over his crate.
"You weren’t supposed to be born, Caleb."
The armorer stopped with one hand on the sanding block.
"You weren’t supposed to be born, Caleb."
Each one said it once. None repeated. The Quarter took turns telling Caleb who he was.
[Hacker: Caleb.]
Caleb gave her silence.
[Hacker: I’m hearing it through your comm. All of them.]
His throat stayed closed.
[Hacker: That’s not a chorus. That’s a signal. The thing in the boot fixer’s stall is using them like antennae. You are the receiver.]
Caleb faced the thing.
The thing held his attention right back.
-----
The figure in the boot fixer’s stall hadn’t moved.
It tilted its head a fraction toward Caleb.
The wear pattern on its face shifted into the closest geometry to expression its face had access to.
Its mouth opened, and Caleb’s voice came from the statue.
"You weren’t supposed to be born, Caleb."
The Quarter went quiet.
-----
The key in Caleb’s ribs woke up, recognition arriving before words, the old answer his body had been built to give.
The cold under his coat turned to heat. Then to burning. Then to pressure pushing outward from the lower ribs in a way nothing in his body had ever pushed before.
The purple spirals under his shirt began to glow.
He saw the light first as a faint shadow on his sleeve, where the spirals on his side bled color through the canvas. Then brighter. The whole left side of his coat was glowing purple. The same purple the cell windows had glowed in the chamber under the rupture zone, the night the thing under his skin opened what it was built to open. The light caught the dust in the alley. It cast a thin purple stripe across the floor of the boot fixer’s stall.
The boot fixer’s right hand twitched. First movement since Caleb had walked into the alley.
The kid’s attention locked on Caleb’s coat.
The recruit at the alley mouth fixed on the glow too.
The Quarter, every face that had said his line, turned toward the purple light.
[Hacker: Caleb.] Caleb kept silent. [Hacker: Your spirals are showing.]
Yes. He tried to stop it, and the key in his ribs ignored the order.
This was what the statue had come to see: the signal his body had been sending to kin for weeks.
The Mimic on the slab. The chamber under the ravine. The rooftop in the Upper Sectors he had no memory of climbing. The drainage grate at the base perimeter peeled back like cheap tin.
The Sector Nine pulse and the bypass’s second line were not separate warnings anymore. They were one body trying to talk to one family.
Soma had been right. The thing in Caleb’s ribs was making decisions, and it had just made one.
-----
The statue tilted its head the other direction.
It had what it had come for.
It turned. It walked out of the boot fixer’s stall, into the alley shadow behind the stall, and into the alley behind that one, and was gone.
The light under Caleb’s coat dimmed. The cold came back. Then nothing. Just the second-line warm of Soma’s resonance, which was the warm he had walked in with.
The chorus dropped mid-word.
The kid blinked, focused on his dumpling, then on Caleb, confusion loosening his face.
The armorer’s hand started sanding again, picking up the stroke where it had left off.
The zip tie man went back to organizing his zip ties.
Yui’s mother came back through the curtain with two bowls in her hands, already inside the rhythm of her work again.
The Quarter resumed.
The kid’s dumpling fell off the stick onto the ground.
His mother came out, swept it up, pushed a fresh one into his hand. The kid took it.
The kid never stopped watching Caleb.
The kid had seen the light.
Maybe his mind would smooth over the shape of it.
Maybe it already had, but he had seen it now. That was new.
-----
Caleb walked out of the Quarter. [Hacker: Caleb.]
"Yeah."
[Hacker: Whoever is steering them moved another one five minutes ago, while you were watching the first. Crayne pinged me three minutes in.]
"How many?"
[Hacker: Two of the eleven are loose now. Nine are still in the vault. The first is the one that just talked to you. I don’t have the second’s location yet.]
"Where is it going?"
[Hacker: I don’t know. Crayne doesn’t know either. But I have an idea about the first one, and the sentence is bad.]
He waited.
[Hacker: It came here because the math says you’re the twelfth.]
He stopped walking.
[Hacker: There were always twelve. The cell sample was the archived remains of the twelfth after the fourth generation broke it down for storage. Your father’s folder is the receipt for that disassembly. The key in your ribs is the part they did not manage to file away. When the other eleven wake up, they wake up around the twelfth. That means you.]
He stepped out of the alley onto the main road.
Soma was standing at the end of the block.
White trench coat. Fur collar. Hands in his pockets. The same detached stillness Caleb recognized across the audit table that morning.
Soma waited.
"I caught it from three sectors away," Soma said. The distance between them was forty meters; his voice carried like it was four. "Your spirals lit up half the lower city."
Caleb stopped at the curb. "You saw it. What was inside it?"
"You," Soma said, and started walking toward him.
"You said you’d kill me if it started making decisions before I did."
"I did," Soma said.
"It just did."
"It did," Soma said.
"Are you here to kill me?" Caleb asked as Soma closed to ten meters.
"No," he said. "I’m here to make sure the second one stays away from you until we know what it wants. You are the twelfth. The other six in my circle are about to find out what that means, and they are not as patient as I am."
He stopped two meters from Caleb.
"Get in the car," Soma said.
