Pushing a heavy slab of shattered asphalt off his legs, Caleb dragged filtered oxygen through his teeth. His canvas trousers smoked where stray acid droplets had landed.
The concussive wave from the Mimic’s detonation left a high whine ringing deep in his ear canal.
His ribs ground against the ballistic weave of his undersuit.
The anomaly behind his sternum thrashed, asking for food he did not have to repair the damage across his back.
The protein block he ate in the staging tent was already gone, leaving his stomach twisted into a hard knot.
Rolling onto his knees, he coughed up soot.
"Sound off!" Rina shouted. Her voice cracked over the local squad link, harsh and urgent. "Hiro! Give me a status right now!"
Caleb forced his head up. The Rank C veteran was already moving. Scrambling over the broken rocks, Rina swept her kinetic rifle across the dark corners first, then started calling names.
"I have my weapon," Hiro stammered from the far end of the bottleneck. The teenager crawled out from behind a fallen stalagmite, wiping ash from his cracked visor with a trembling hand. "Optics are down. I’m intact."
"Hold the left flank," Rina ordered. Her boots slipped in the mud as she pushed toward the center of the trap. "Do not break your elevation."
Caleb looked toward the center of the ravine.
Jaxson was not intact.
The blast had caught the veteran at point-blank range. Acid pooled around a melted crater in the floor. The neon armor plates were reduced to boiling slag. Black fluid scraped against the stone, eating through the polymer weave and the flesh beneath it.
The smell hit Caleb’s filters. Burning hair, melted plastic, and roasting meat.
Bile rushed up his throat. He gagged, throwing a hand over his respirator. He looked away, his chest heaving. Jaxson had just been yelling at him. Now he was a dissolving puddle of gore in the dirt.
He had cleaned dead things for years. This was different.
Reaching the edge of the acid pool, Rina stopped. She lowered her rifle a fraction of an inch, staring at the smoking remains of her squadmate. Her jaw locked tight enough to crack a molar. Her shoulder jerked once before she forced it still.
She forced her voice into a tactical clip. "Jaxson is gone. Keep your eyes on the dark. Mercer, get your weapon up."
Swallowing the acid taste in his mouth, Caleb staggered to his feet. His boots sank deep into the wet sludge. A plasma rifle lay in the mud near a severed mechanical strut. The weapon casing bore deep scratches, but the battery indicator glowed a steady green.
He picked it up with his left hand. The grip felt slick with coolant. His fingers shook violently.
Rina banged a fist against the side of her helmet. "Command, this is Assault Squad Three. We have a casualty. Requesting immediate grid reset and extraction."
Static answered her.
"I said requesting extraction!" Rina yelled. She spun toward the massive iron gates at the rear of the cavern. "Why are the bulkheads sealed?"
Raising the plasma rifle, Caleb aimed the heavy barrel directly at the twitching glass dome of the hollowed-out Mimic.
His military HUD flickered.
The green crosshairs vanished. The ammunition counter dissolved into static.
Purple code cut across the cracked visor, violently overriding the operating system.
[??? : His arrogance ruined the framing.]
Caleb locked his jaw. He kept the rifle raised. Tapping the manual override button on his gauntlet, he attempted a hard reset. The screen ignored the command. The military firewall offered zero resistance against her access keys.
[??? : He stepped directly into your shot. I despise people who steal your light.]
Caleb brought up a secondary diagnostic panel on his wrist console, typing a rapid command to route a distress ping through Hiro’s damaged optical frequency. The line died before the data packet compiled.
"You dropped the comms," Caleb whispered. He kept his volume barely audible over his internal microphone so Rina wouldn’t hear him talking to empty air. "You sealed the doors."
[??? : The bulkheads sealed before your squad knew it happened.]
The purple text scrolled smoothly across his field of vision, illuminating the falling ash in a neon glow.
[??? : The military feed is gone. I am the only signal still reaching you.]
Lowering the plasma rifle a fraction of an inch, Caleb stared at the text. The pieces lined up too fast.
The Hacker had not closed the doors. That did not make the answer better.
Quarantine protocol.
That was the only answer that made sense. The kind written for infection zones, failed cave teams, and threats command could not afford to let climb.
[??? : Someone built a box around you. I only found the window.]
The words stayed too pleased. She hadn’t orchestrated the slaughterhouse, but she was absolutely reveling in the access it granted her. The doors were closed, the grid was gone, and she was the only voice still reaching him.
"They quarantined the sector," Caleb breathed. He gripped the rifle tight enough to crack the plastic stock.
[??? : They consider you dead. But I know what you are capable of. Show me the knife work again.]
Checking the top corner of his visor, Caleb saw the viewer count holding steady. One hundred thousand. A locked ceiling.
"Mercer, secure the rear!" Rina commanded, her voice echoing off the canyon walls as she moved toward the sealed bulkhead. "We are cut off. I need a perimeter check while I try to manually bypass this door."
Caleb looked at the veteran trying to pry a welded lock open with her bare hands. The reality of their isolation set in. He used the only leverage he possessed.
"This is a containment zone," Caleb whispered into the private channel. "We have rookies in the back. Rina cannot pry that door open alone. You have backdoor access. Unlock the bulkheads. Give us the grid back."
[??? : You are negotiating for people who treat you like garbage.]
"I need the public broadcast," Caleb countered, sweat stinging his eyes. "You want me to hit Rank C. I need public engagement to clear the metrics. Open the feed."
[??? : You do not need their cheap currency. I own your debt. I own your visibility.]
The purple text pulsed, shifting into a larger font that dominated the glass.
[??? : Let them watch from the back. I want to see you survive this on your own terms.]
"The machine is hollow," Caleb argued, his voice tightening. "The fight is over."
[??? : Then why is the ground moving?]
The text dissolved. The military blue interface booted back online, restoring the green crosshairs.
Caleb stared at the restored display. The claustrophobia of the subterranean ravine pressed heavily down on his shoulders. He was trapped in a quarantine zone, and the only signal still reaching him refused to open the door.
He stepped toward the ruined Mimic, his finger resting on the trigger.
The ground beneath his boots vibrated.
Caleb stopped.
He waited for the Mimic’s optical sensors to twitch again. He watched the heavy iron legs anchored in the mud. The machine remained completely motionless.
The vibration increased. It traveled up through the soles of his boots, rattling the bones in his knees. It lacked the erratic, clicking rhythm of a scavenger swarm. It did not match the grinding gear-shifts of a Siege-breaker.
The vibration felt older and heavier than the Mimic.
Spinning away from the sealed door, Rina dropped her center of gravity. She leveled her rifle at the cavern floor. "Hiro! Give me a seismic read right now!"
"I don’t have a read!" Hiro yelled back, scrambling higher onto the rock shelf. "The seismics are blank! The grid is empty!"
Caleb stumbled backward.
The gray moss ten feet away split open. Boiling mud bubbled up from the fracture.
The bedrock ruptured with a deafening crack.
