The buried infrastructure under the old transit grid was a service corridor that hadn’t held a service in thirty years.
The Hacker pulled the maintenance hatch open with a tool she hadn’t brought to a maintenance hatch before. Flat. Magnetic. Ringed at the head. The hatch came up without complaint. Caleb watched her clip the tool back to her belt and decided not to ask.
They went down a ladder.
Caleb tested the first four rungs and found them sound. He stopped testing and trusted the rest.
The corridor at the bottom had lights in the ceiling sockets and no power in any of them. Dust on the floor. One set of boot prints leading the same direction they were headed. The prints were a man’s size. The man hadn’t been hurrying.
"He came in ahead of us," the Hacker said.
"By how much?" Caleb asked. "He’s not coming back."
"The dust pattern says days, not hours," she said. "He’s not coming back tonight."
Caleb counted strides as they walked. Three minutes by his count. Iharu trailed two paces back with his scatter-gun low. Tali was on telemetry from the surface van, useless inside this much rock. Hiro was on the hatch up top. Kikaru held a cordon two streets out. The bottom of the ladder could wait until they had a name for it.
The corridor opened into a vault.
The vault was round. The ceiling was high enough that the lamp sockets along the walls would have needed scaffolding to set. Twenty sockets. No fixtures. The whole room had been wired and abandoned at the same time.
The Hacker’s lamp lit the floor.
Twelve plinths stood in a circle around the center.
Eleven of them held statues.
The twelfth was empty.
The room made the number feel deliberate in a way a diagram never could.
On paper, twelve points were a theory.
Down here, twelve points were architecture. Somebody had carved the space around that number, wired light around it, built a city over it, and then trusted darkness to keep the count.
-----
Caleb held still for a full breath.
The Hacker held with him. Her breathing had gone quiet beside him. Quieter than her comms-breathing.
Iharu stepped one foot into the vault, saw the room, and stopped without being told to.
The statues were the size of a man, but a man was the wrong shape to call them. Four limbs. Vertical posture. The proportions came out wrong on inspection. Shoulders narrower than the hips. Arms too long. The head set too far forward off the neck. They were plated in the same dark plating as the sample in the cell six floors under Seventh Division. Each one was marked along the plating with the vocabulary Caleb had been learning to read for three months without admitting to himself that he was learning a vocabulary.
The longer he studied them, the less they seemed carved.
Stone had tool marks. Cast metal had seams. These had neither. The plates flowed over their bodies as if the bodies had grown tired in the middle of moving and chosen stillness over death.
He counted the marks on the closest one.
Twelve.
The next one. Twelve.
By the fifth one he made himself stop counting. The number wasn’t going to change. The number was the point.
Caleb’s eyes went to the empty plinth.
The dust on top of it wasn’t even. Four small points of it had been shielded from settling. Four contact-shapes curled inward toward the center of the plinth. A forearm-sized object. Plated. Curled.
He knew the shape that fit those four contact points.
It was in a containment cell six floors under his building, in a Rank C-tagged corridor he’d walked past every shift for three weeks.
The Hacker spoke beside him without looking at him.
"He’s been moving them."
"He moved that one to Sector Nine for the drop."
"Yes."
"How many of the others are still here."
She lifted the lamp and panned it around the circle. The dust around the base of every remaining plinth was even. No shielding patterns. No contact shapes.
"All of them," she said. "Still."
"How long do we have."
"He took the smallest first. They put that one in a cell because nobody had a category for a forearm-sized animal that stayed inert and refused to decompose. The other eleven are bigger. He needs different math to move them."
"He’s collecting them back."
"He is collecting them back." The words made the empty plinth seem occupied, not by the missing sample, but by the intention behind it.
Caleb studied the circle again and understood why the room was wrong.
It was not a tomb. It was storage. And someone had opened inventory. Recently.
-----
Iharu stepped further into the room. He stopped beside the closest statue and tilted his head toward the geometry that was almost a face and wasn’t.
"Caleb," Iharu said. "I want a count on the exit corridors."
"There’s one. The way we came in."
His scatter-gun came up to a low ready. "Bad room. Round room, one door. Whoever built this meant for the things inside to stay here."
"They built it for the statues."
"Statues that stood here a long time, plated like the thing in our basement, marked like the plate above the knee of the drudger you killed in Sector Six." Iharu checked the dust between plinths. "And a man’s been walking through this room recently."
"For days. Not hours."
"He walked past these. Past all of them. Walked over to the empty plinth." Iharu’s jaw worked once. "Caleb. Where’s the file on Sample R-9-Omega this week."
"Locked under Iris," Caleb said.
"Who has clearance above her?"
"Two division captains. And Soma."
Iharu’s jaw worked again. "Soma was in our building Wednesday."
"He was."
"And the sample was the only thing he asked about that wasn’t on his sheet."
The Hacker turned her head a quarter inch toward Iharu. The lamp swung with her, throwing the shadow of the empty plinth across the wall behind it.
"Who is Soma?" she said.
Caleb kept his eyes on the empty plinth. "SSS. One of seven."
"That wasn’t in your summary."
"You weren’t on this comm for that one."
Her attention returned to the empty plinth. Her knuckles around the lamp handle went a shade whiter.
-----
Iharu’s voice lost its joking edge. "Hacker. What are they?"
"I don’t have a word."
"Try."
"I’ve been trying for eleven years without finding one."
"Try tonight."
She faced the statues. Eleven of them. The empty twelfth.
"They are the thing the city was built on top of so the city could pretend they never existed. They are what the sample is a child of. They are what my mother died telling me to find."
The last sentence came out faster than the other two. She heard herself say it and let it stand.
She wiped the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand. Then she straightened. The lamp went steady. Her voice came back to the register it was supposed to be in.
"That is what I have for you tonight."
Caleb let that sit in the room.
He stepped toward the closest statue. He pressed the heel of his glove to the plate above the knee. The same spot the drudger’s plate had touched him in Sector Six. The spot the violet streaks on his ribs were anchored under right now.
The plate on the statue was warm.
His ribs were warm in answer.
The warmth came from somewhere under the skin. The statue was no heat source. The spiral marks under his coat had registered something in the plate and were registering back, and the warmth was a conversation happening on a frequency Caleb’s body could only translate as temperature.
He pulled the glove back.
"It noticed me."
"They notice each other," the Hacker said. "All of them have been noticing the sample for thirty years. The sample has been listening. Now you’re in the room. They’re noticing you."
"Are they going to do anything?"
"Not tonight." Iharu’s scatter-gun rose another inch anyway.
-----
A long way above their heads, in a room they had not found yet, a man set down the kettle he had been drinking from.
He had eleven to go.
