Mom was at home, as usual, casually attending to household chores while waiting for Heena to arrive. She had overheard my agonizing over the gift I'd chosen for Heena yesterday and seemed to have taken special care with her appearance today.

"Son."

"Yeah?"

While we waited for Heena and watched TV on the sofa, Mom addressed me.

"Do you have enough money for the beach trip?"

"I've saved up some allowance, and I made a good amount from my part-time job recently. I think I'm good."

"Have you sorted out where you'll be staying?"

Seeing my mother engaging with someone so joyfully was a first for me. The way Heena interacted with my mother was so respectful, it felt unfamiliar and even strange.

It was as if two strangers were conversing right in front of me.

For quite some time, they recapped our love story, from the day we first met to the many times Heena visited me at my part-time job over the past month.

As the conversation flowed, they eventually touched upon our upcoming beach trip planned for the first week of summer vacation.

"I heard from Yeonho earlier that you've made a hotel reservation for us," Heena mentioned.

"I did that because I was worried about Yeonho. Don’t overthink it."

"Thank you, ma'am. We promise to have a great time and return safely."

I half-expected Heena to politely decline, but surprisingly, she simply bowed her head slightly in gratitude.

Seeing this, my mother looked genuinely surprised and said, "How can someone be so well-mannered?"

"To think I was worried about the two of you going on the trip. Seeing you now, I realize there's no need."

"Yes. In fact, my mother mentioned she'd look into getting a room for us."

"Wait, this is the first time I'm hearing this. She's booking only one room?"

Taken aback by this unexpected news, I blurted out in surprise. But Heena's face didn't show the slightest hint of discomfort.

"I booked two single rooms... should I change it?"

I couldn't keep up with the rapid pace of the conversation.

It was a swap of photos from our middle school days. Ecstatic about the great deal, I quickly stashed the picture in my wallet, planning to revisit it from time to time.

After spending another hour reminiscing through the albums, we left my house.

With my brother's return uncertain, staying home felt pointless. Heena seemed curious to see what my brother looked like, but I wasn't keen on the idea.
