Chapter 36: Heart of the Ocean

A fresh morning.

Chrome sat comfortably on the sofa, one leg crossed over the other, a steaming cup of black coffee in one hand and a luxury lifestyle magazine in the other. The scent of freshly ground Arabica beans gave his coffee just the expensive touch it needed.

From the corner of his eye, he caught movement.

Lana emerged from the bedroom, and Chrome’s fingers froze mid-page turn. She’d put on one of the outfits he’d bought her at Forbes Mall... a cream-colored silk blouse that hugged her curves in all the right places, paired with tailored charcoal trousers that accentuated her long legs.

Chrome quickly looked back down at his magazine as he flipped a page nonchalantly.

Damn.

He snuck another glance. Lana was adjusting her cuff with a small smile on her glossy lips. She knew exactly what she was doing.

Back to the magazine.

Then another peek.

"You know..."

An amused Lana said without turning around.

"If you keep doing that, your neck might get stuck."

Chrome cleared his throat.

"Ahem."

He flipped another page, feigning deep interest in an article about luxury yacht interiors.

"I was just thinking... since I have all this money now, you wouldn’t need to overwork yourself anymore. And yet here you are, looking for a new job."

Lana sighed, finally turning to face him.

"Oh, come on. You know I’m not that kind of person. I don’t want to stay at home all day doing nothing while you do all the work."

Chrome shrugged, still not looking up from his magazine.

"Well, I’m fine with it sooo..."

Lana chuckled softly. She walked over to him as her heels clicked softly against the floor.

"I need to do this on my own. I appreciate your help, but you’ve already done enough by getting me all these nice clothes, okay?"

Before Chrome could respond, she leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek.

"You’re a darling."

Chrome felt the warmth spread across his face.

He smiled and focused on his magazine.

Lana grabbed her purse and headed for the door. Just as she was about to step out, Chrome called out, "Can you at least tell me the place you got an interview at so I can send you some flowers?"

Lana peeked her head back through the doorway.

"Nice try. But I won’t fall for it."

She smiled and left.

Chrome waited a while, then set down his magazine.

"Well. I should probably get to lectures."

He rose from the sofa and made his way to the walk-in closet in his master bedroom. The floor-to-ceiling shelves were lined with designer pieces organized by color and occasion.

First, a crisp white button-down shirt from Brioni that cost $3,800. The trousers were from the same brand, a perfect match at $1,500.

He reached for a belt... Hermès, alligator leather with a palladium buckle worth $35,000. The socks were from Pantherella, cashmere blend at $1,800.

Total: $44,440. And that was just a casual Tuesday.

Chrome examined himself in the full-length mirror.

"Not bad. Not bad at all."

He grabbed his handbag and headed out the bedroom.

The living room opened up before him, and Chrome spotted Laura and Micah curled up on one of the guest sofas, still fast asleep. They’d claimed they didn’t trust their daughter with Chrome, so they’d "volunteered" to stay here to "keep an eye on things." But Chrome knew the truth. They’d tasted the luxury lifestyle—heated floors, the smart home system, the fully stocked kitchen with imported ingredients, the walk-in showers with rainfall settings—and they weren’t about to let go.

Not that Chrome minded.

He’d planned to have them come stay here anyway.

’Ehhh, they deserve a break...’

Chrome made his way to the front door, but the moment he stepped outside, he stopped short.

A group of women in sharp black suits surrounded him. All of them wore the same cold face, their eyes hidden behind sunglasses. Chrome recognized them instantly.

The Forbes family’s personal security detail.

He raised an eyebrow.

’Hm. Knew I’ve seen these guys somewhere before.’

One of the guards extended a black card with a golden imperial seal embossed on its surface.

"You. The seal on this card means you can’t turn down the offer. You’ve been ordered to attend dinner by Matriarch Matilda Forbes. You will make sure to stick to it."

Chrome’s eyes widened slightly.

’Ohhh. Now it makes sense.’

He took the card and studied it closely.

’She probably wants to know why her daughter and I were smashing lips together in a dressing room. The women in this world are crazy. I’m not too keen on this meeting.’

Chrome sighed regretfully.

"Fine. I’ll be there."

When he lifted his head, the place was empty.

All the guards had vanished.

Chrome’s eyes went half-lidded.

"Not dramatic at all."

---

The Business Faculty at the university was quite busy with activity when Chrome arrived.

He entered the lecture hall and spotted Nate who was vibrating with excitement.

"Chrome! There you are!"

Nate grabbed his arm and pulled him into a seat.

"I don’t know how it happened, but my parents now have a TV, a new bed, a nice sofa, a freezer, and new locks for their home! It’s fucking amazing, dude! We don’t know where it came from, but whoever did it must be some kind of Robin Hood or something!"

Chrome yawned and leaned back in his chair, listening to Nate’s rambling.

’Nate is the best friend of the body’s original owner. Must be for a good reason. So I decided to transfer all the stuff I got at my old apartment to Nate’s parents’ place.’

Chrome tried his hardest to look surprised.

"Wow, that’s crazy. Robin Hood. Yeah."

"I know, right?"

Nate continued, oblivious.

"My mom was crying, my dad was speechless—"

A hand slammed down on their desk.

Chrome didn’t need to look up. He only needed the sweet scent of vanilla and lilacs to guess who it was.

He raised his head and saw Quinn Hilton.

She had a very stern look on her face.

Nate scrambled to fix his hair and straighten his clothes, clearly flustered.

"Good day, Ms. Hilton! What do we owe such a—"

"Get out."

That was all Quinn said. Nate scrambled out of his seat and bolted down the aisle without looking back.

The other students in the lecture hall started whispering.

"Why hasn’t Quinn given up on this guy?"

"Is he that special to her?"

"He’s not even all that."

"His clothes have changed though... must be Quinn spoiling him with her family’s wealth."

Chrome ignored them all.

Quinn frowned, leaning in until their noses were almost touching. Chrome found himself studying her features up close. Her nose was so smooth and pointed—she could probably be a model. He’d always known she was pretty, but this close, she was something else entirely.

"I’ve been patient with you for a very long time. But I’m done playing games now. You’ll accept my offer then I’ll take you out for shopping. You don’t have a choice anymore."

Chrome sighed and waved his hands dismissively.

"I’ve told you before. You think your wealth makes you a god. But to me, your multi-billion-dollar conglomerate is nothing but a sandbox. I don’t need your charity, and I certainly don’t need your permission."

Quinn’s face flushed red. The humiliation of being talked down to by a man would have driven any other high-society woman to fury. But looking at Chrome’s perfect, dominant face, her pride broke just like that.

She reached into her blazer and pulled out a velvet-lined box. Inside sat a deep-blue crystal pendant.

The system chimed in Chrome’s mind.

[High-tier rejection scene detected!]

[Female lead: Quinn Hilton]

[Emotional fluctuation levels: Extreme]

[Reward: Rank-Up Materials x3]

Chrome’s eyes widened slightly.

’That’s... the Heart of the Ocean. A mythical spiritual artifact worth over $30 million. It can accelerate a martial artist’s energy refinement by tenfold.’

Quinn’s hand trembled slightly as she held out the box.

"This is my offer. Take it, and everything I have is yours. Refuse me again, and..."

She didn’t finish the sentence. She didn’t need to.

The entire lecture hall had gone silent.

Every student was watching in disbelief.

The Heart of the Ocean was legendary.

People had died trying to obtain it.

And Quinn Hilton was just handing it over.

Chrome looked at the pendant, then back at Quinn’s flushed beautiful face.
