Mei’s gaze slid to Damon, then back to Lark. "But this is a long flight. No need for such formality on board. We’re all... companions here."

She turned and led the way up the plank, her hips swaying in a rhythm that drew the eyes of every disciple on the dock.

Damon followed, with Lark a careful step behind.

The main deck was spacious, furnished with low tables and plush seating cushions arranged around a central mast.

A faint hum of energy vibrated through the deck as the ship’s formation arrays activated.

With a soft hum, the Sky Cutter rose into the air, the sect grounds shrinking below into a patchwork of green and white.

Mei settled onto a large cushion like a queen claiming her throne. She patted the space beside her.

"Damon, come. Sit. You must tell me how you’ve been entertaining yourself in Selene’s mansion."

Damon took a seat, leaning back against a padded rail. "Training, mostly."

"Mostly?" Mei’s lips curled.

"I find that hard to believe. The spiritual sense in that mansion has been... quite active at night."

She glanced meaningfully at Lark, who was busying himself with inspecting the railing on the far side of the deck.

"Don’t you agree, Lark? The nights on the mountain peak can be so cold. One seeks warmth where one can find it."

Lark’s shoulders tightened almost imperceptibly. He didn’t turn around. "I wouldn’t know, Elder. My body don’t feel cold."

"Hohoho~ what a shame. You’re missing the fun." Mei laughed.

"Damon, be a dear and pour the tea."

A jade pot and cups sat on the low table.

As Damon reached for it, Mei shifted, letting her knee brush against his thigh. Her scent wrapped around him.

’She’s playing games with me. Testing my reactions, and watching Lark’s too.’

Damon poured three cups, his movements calm. He held one out toward Lark. "Tea?"

Lark finally turned. He approached with measured steps, took the cup with a nod of thanks, and immediately retreated to a solitary cushion near the ship’s bow.

He held the cup with both hands, his gaze fixed on the clouds streaming past.

Over the next hour, Damon watched.

Whenever Mei moved or spoke, Lark’s eyes would flick toward her, then instantly away, as if the sight of her was a physical shock he had to avoid.

When a serving crew—a young woman with a bright smile—brought a plate of spirit fruits, Lark accepted it with a bow so precise it was robotic, his fingers careful not to touch hers.

Mei noticed everything. She stretched languidly, arching her back so her chest strained against the fabric of her robe.

"The air is so thin up here. It makes one... breathless."

Lark’s knuckles whitened around his teacup. He took a small, controlled sip.

"Lark," Mei said suddenly. "You’re from a noble family, aren’t you? Such impeccable manners. So restrained. It must be exhausting."

"Discipline is its own reward, Elder," Lark replied, his voice even.

"Discipline." Mei savored the word. "Some things are more rewarding when you let discipline... slip." She looked directly at Damon, her eyes half-lidded.

"Don’t you think?"

Damon met her gaze. "Depends on the goal."

Mei sighed, a mock lament. "Very well. I shall be disciplined too. For now." She rose in a fluid motion.

"I will be in my cabin. The view is better from the private balcony. You two... try not to be too boring."

She glided away, leaving a heavy silence in her wake.

The only sounds were the wind and the hum of the ship. Damon stood and walked to the railing near Lark. He looked out at the endless sky, dotted with distant, jagged mountain peaks.

"Nervous about the capital?" Damon asked, his tone casual.

Lark kept his eyes forward. "Not, at all. Sect Master give me this mission because he trust me that I’m capable."

"Oh Right. Mission." Damon leaned on the rail, close enough that their sleeves almost touched.

Lark move a inch away.

"You know, for a guy who’s about to see the greatest city on the continent, you seem more interested in your tea."

"Well, I’ve been there a few time so I get use to it." Lark said.

Damon’s golden eyes traced the line of Lark’s jaw, the smooth skin of his/her neck where the Origin Grade necklace lay invisible.

’But why? A princess running from her own life? Or hiding form something?’

The ship sailed on, cutting through a bank of mist. For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, from the shadows of the doorway to the cabins, Damon felt a familiar, predatory gaze watching them both.

Mei wasn’t in her cabin at all.
