- Chapter 1: In The Distant Seas
Soon after the great presence entered the waters, all sailors present in the surrounding seas saw a giant being travelling through the water.
Its figure remained just below the surface of the sea, so no one could see its true form. However, the trail of waves it created as it travelled fiercely was a sign of its great size.
It swam around following no specific route. Sometimes it circled itself, and sometimes it swam close to its mother, whose body remained afloat.
Eventually, its eyes locked onto the Redflower ship, and it made a straight line towards it. The ferocious waves created from its sudden movements caused all surrounding sea life to flee away.
It passed the small mermen that had previously attacked the ships, and as it did, the mermen ceased to exist. Whether they fled or were devoured by the newcomer, no one could tell. However, so much ink was released that the seas turned black.
Blodwen’s eyes went wide as he sensed the danger of the approaching creature.
"Brace yourselves! No, forget that. Hide! Hide beneath deck and give me space to fight!"
Immediately, he knew that the crew had thrown themselves into something far greater than they could handle. Even with his strength, Blodwen could tell that this being was not his equal.
He suspected that it was Treasure-Eater Nammon, born in flesh, but that didn’t make sense. Even when pacts were broken, gods usually only brought their wrath onto their pact-breakers. It was rare that they ever appeared themselves to bring such judgement.
The members of the crew didn’t need to be asked twice. They quickly hurried beneath the deck, praying to whichever gods would hear them.
Blodwen took in a deep breath as he watched the creature approach from the distance. Then, he noticed something beside him.
Captain Roseus stood there, red hair cascading in the wind. In his right hand, he wielded the giant Greycloud Longsword, with its golden-black point resting in the deck. In his left hand, he held his revolver, loaded with the Monochrome .38 Special. His face was straight and serious.
Blodwen’s expression became disturbed.
"Are you fucking insane? Do you know what that is?"
Roseus continued staring out at the approaching being. His face never changed.
"The Treasure-Eater, whose wrath is aimed towards me."
Blodwen could only stare at the captain. At that moment, he noticed a look on the young man’s face.
It was similar to the expression that Redeye often wore when he had made a decision and would not go back on it.
He knew there was no hope in trying.
He let out a sigh and placed his hands on the railing.
"Alright, defend the ship. I will attack the seas."
Before Roseus could ask any questions, Blodwen’s body suddenly started to change.
The shark carcass which he wore on his back like a cape suddenly grew, enveloping around him like living skin. His body began to mutate, and his clothes tore as his limbs shifted to strange proportions.
Before the process was finished, Blodwen placed his foot on the railing and dove into the water. By the time he landed, he had already mutated into a dark green-and-white shark, roughly five metres long.
He was nowhere near the size of Nammon, but still, he swam underwater towards the sea god, preparing to meet it in a clash.
Roseus braced himself. Was Blodwen truly about to clash with a sea god?
...
Underwater, Blodwen used his shark form to swim towards the sea god, Nammon. He charged himself with numerous powers that would increase his swim speed, bite force, and ramming power.
He knew that this was a risk, but it was a risk he was willing to take. His shark form was powerful and had always been able to deal with incredibly dangerous creatures.
As he swam, he couldn’t see the form he was heading towards. Not until he got close.
As he sensed that they were less than fifty metres away from each other, Blodwen opened his shark jaws wide, preparing to devour.
Then, he saw Nammon. Or at least the being’s jaws.
It was like a cave of absolute darkness, easily towering over him as though he were a minuscule bug.
At that moment, Blodwen felt fear unlike anything he had ever experienced before.
He turned his body as sharply to the right as he could, just barely dodging Nammon’s gaping mouth.
Once safe, he felt his heart rate slow down. Then he realised...
Nammon’s trajectory was heading straight for the Redflower ship.
His evasion had damned his crew.
...
From the ship, Roseus watched as Blodwen’s figure manoeuvred out of the way of the oncoming force. To him, it was a testimony to just how powerful Nammon was.
And now, the sea god was heading straight towards their ship.
At first, its figure still couldn’t be seen. It was only a mass moving beneath the ocean, creating waves wherever it travelled.
Then, as it neared the ship, its golden figure slowly began to emerge from the waters.
He could only see the top part of its head. It was like a ginormous worm made from gold. It had no eyes or anything else on its face other than a gaping mouth whose insides looked like the deepest cave.
Slowly, Nammon’s mouth opened wider. The sea god was so large that it could devour the ship if it wished.
Roseus cursed inwardly, trying his best to calm himself after sighting the golden worm.
He thought about his allies waiting for him beneath the deck, relying on him and Blodwen to keep them safe. He thought about his father and the creatures that man may have had to face during his journey.
Then, with recklessness, Roseus lifted his sword above his head, leapt over the railing, and swung the Greycloud Longsword down with as much force as he could muster, aiming towards Nammon.
He made sure to strike with the full intention of activating the lightning effect on his target.
