Caelan moved fast.
The morning after his briefing, Ren walked toward the annex and counted three faces on campus that hadn’t been there yesterday. A woman near the administration building. A man at the east gate. A third near the training yard entrance. They wore plain clothes and carried nothing visible, but they stood the way soldiers stand when they’re pretending to be civilians — straight-backed, alert, eyes covering every approach in practiced sweeps.
Ren extended his ground-sensing technique as he walked past the woman at the admin building. Her cultivation was suppressed, pushed down tight beneath her surface, but he could still feel the edges of it. Tier 2. At least Stage 5. Stronger than Selene.
He checked the others. Same reading. Three Tier 2 cultivators posted on a school campus like it was a military installation.
Alliance security. The real kind.

Inside the annex, the changes were subtler but everywhere. The ward system had been upgraded overnight — Ren felt the new layers the moment he crossed the threshold. Heavier. Denser. His ground-sensing couldn’t fully read the depth of them, which meant they were designed by someone operating at a level above what he could measure. The old wards had been Alliance-grade. These were something beyond that.
Corridor cameras had been repositioned to cover blind spots. Emergency beacon stations were restocked with fresh equipment. And Room 3-C had a new addition — a small flat device mounted near the ceiling in the corner, almost invisible against the ward-glow. SCAN tagged it as a real-time energy monitoring system, military grade, capable of detecting cultivation signatures within a hundred-meter radius.
Cassian spotted it the moment he sat down. He glanced at the ceiling, then at Ren, and raised an eyebrow.
Ren gave a small nod. Yeah. I see it.
They were being protected by the people watching them. Ren didn’t mind. Three Tier 2 guards and military monitoring was better than anything he could do alone.

Selene ran the morning session like a different instructor.
No energy drills. No formation exercises. She walked in, set her tablet on the desk, and said: "New protocol. From today, we train for threat response. You will learn defensive formations, coordinated retreat patterns, and how to fight as a unit against opponents who are trying to hurt you, not score points against you."
She pulled up the training-hall grid and configured the dummies. When they activated, Ren noticed the difference immediately. They weren’t moving like beasts. They were moving like people — coordinated approaches, feints, flanking maneuvers, and targeted strikes aimed at the weakest-looking member of the group.
The first time Lyra got targeted, Ren and Iris adjusted their positioning to cover her before anyone said a word. The second time, Cassian had already shifted to a rear-guard stance that intercepted the flanking dummy. The third time, Kaelen took it out with a clean strike before it reached range.
The corruption zone had built these instincts. Selene was sharpening them.
"Again," she said. "Faster."
They ran it twelve times. By the end, the group was moving like a single organism — covering angles, rotating positions, protecting their vulnerable spots without needing to communicate. Yuelan handled the front. Kaelen and Ren took the flanks. Iris directed the mid-line. Cassian and Lin Yueying covered the rear. Lyra sat at the center, running energy support and stabilization, which was where her real talent lived.
It was the first time Ren had seen Selene look satisfied in weeks.

During the break, Ren ran SCAN on the perimeter. The result was the same as it had been for days.
SCAN — perimeter sweep.
Anomalous surveillance signatures: none detected. Zero contacts in 6 days.
Assessment: external observers have completed reconnaissance and withdrawn. Their information package is likely complete — campus layout, ward patterns, security rotations, training schedules.
Escalation probability: high.
Six days of silence. The watchers had finished their work and pulled back. Whatever came next wouldn’t be reconnaissance.
Ren closed the SCAN window and looked around Room 3-C. Cassian was stretching his leg. Yuelan was shadow-boxing in the corner. Iris was writing something precise in her notebook. Lyra was helping Eira restock a trauma kit. Lin Yueying was sitting perfectly still, eyes closed, cultivating. Kaelen was cleaning his training gear with the focused attention he gave everything.
Vesper sat near the wall with Mistwhisker in her lap. The void-cat’s ears were flat. Her violet eyes tracked the room in short, sharp sweeps — door, window, corner, door. She hadn’t relaxed since the deep zone, and today she was worse than usual. Whatever Mistwhisker sensed in the air, it wasn’t good.
Vesper caught Ren’s eye. She didn’t say anything. She just looked at him and then looked at Mistwhisker, and the message was clear: she feels it. Something is close.

That evening, Caelan appeared on the campus grounds again. Ren saw him from the annex window — walking with the same two Alliance officials from the briefing, plus a fourth person Ren hadn’t seen before. A tall man in dark clothing whose cultivation was so deeply suppressed that Ren’s senses couldn’t read it at all. Not even a whisper.
Either the man was incredibly skilled at concealment, or he was operating at a level where Ren’s Sprout-stage senses simply couldn’t reach. Stage 7 or above. The kind of cultivator whose existence reshaped the security calculation of an entire region just by being present.
Caelan was talking to the group with his hands in his pockets and his easy posture, but his face was serious. He glanced up at the annex window, saw Ren watching, and held eye contact for one second.
The look said: I’m handling this. Stay ready. Trust me.
Ren nodded to himself and stepped away from the window. Whatever Caelan was doing behind the scenes, it was bigger than a school principal managing a security concern. He was coordinating with people whose power level made the Tier 2 gate guards look like students.
The Crimson Serpent Sect had scouted a school with seven BPLs inside it. And the Alliance had responded by bringing in someone whose cultivation Ren couldn’t even measure.
That told him everything he needed to know about how seriously the adults were taking this.

He went home that night and sat on his bed in the dark for a while. Kaia was warm in his chest, alert but steady, the way she got when danger was near but not immediate. The Life-law side of his foundation hummed gently, keeping his body in perfect condition. The Death-law side was quiet, coiled, ready.
He thought about the group eating together the night before. About Cassian saying we handle it together.About Lyra’s steady hands restocking trauma kits like she was preparing for something real. About Kaelen’s silent nod that said I will catch up. About Selene choosing to teach instead of investigate.
These were his people now. Not just classmates. Not just a training group. People he would fight for, and who would fight for him, against something none of them had chosen but all of them were going to face.
’Let them come,’ Ren thought.
Kaia pulsed. Warm. Sharp. Ready.
Outside the apartment window, the city of Orien slept peacefully. It didn’t know what was circling in the dark beyond its borders. But inside the sealed annex on the east side of campus, seven Bloodline Plant Lords and the people who protected them were awake, trained, and waiting.
The Crimson Serpent had finished watching.
Whatever came next, the Seven wouldn’t be caught sleeping.
