The next morning, Eira handed Ren a small sealed vial at breakfast. Inside was a clear liquid with a faint red tint — the purified essence of the Crimson Vitality Bloom, cleaned of corruption and ready for absorption.
"That’s as clean as I can get it," she said. "The compound is stable. High quality. Absorb it during a proper cultivation session, not in the field."
Ren tucked the vial into his pack. "Thanks, Eira."
One step closer to Sprout, sitting in his bag like a glass of possibility. But he didn’t have time to think about it, because Selene had other plans for the day.
— • —
The exercise was a sustained clearing sweep — push through a dense section of corrupted forest, maintaining full energy filtration the entire time while dealing with whatever came at them. No breaks. No rest stops. Move forward, stay filtered, fight when necessary, keep going until Selene said stop.
It was designed to drain them. The point wasn’t combat or navigation — it was endurance under constant energy stress. In a corruption zone, the biggest danger wasn’t the beasts. It was the slow, steady drain of maintaining filtration for hours. Eventually everyone’s reserves would thin, and that was when mistakes happened.
The group moved out in formation. Cassian and Yuelan on point, Ren and Kaelen in the middle, Iris and Lyra behind them, Vesper ranging to the side with Mistwhisker. Eira near the center. Selene at the back.
— • —
The first hour went well. They cleared twisted undergrowth, fought off a pair of corrupted boars, and kept filtration steady. The corruption here was thicker than the outer zone — constant, heavy pressure against their channels.
By the second hour, the drain was showing. Cassian’s movement had slowed. Iris was conserving energy, her strikes becoming more precise to compensate. Even Kaelen looked like he was working harder than usual, though he’d never admit it.
Lyra was quiet.
Ren had been watching her since the sweep started. He knew what was coming. He’d seen it in the energy control test, in the pressure chamber, in every situation where sustained output mattered more than technique. Her control was excellent. Her talent was real. But her reserves were shallow, and a two-hour sustained sweep was exactly the kind of exercise that would empty them.
By ninety minutes, he could see it happening. Careful but slightly unsteady steps. Controlled but too-fast breathing. The edges of her filtration thinning toward the point where corruption energy would start leaking through.
She didn’t say anything. She didn’t slow down. She didn’t ask for help.
She just kept going.

At two hours, Selene called a formation halt in a small clearing. Five-minute rest. Not enough to recover, just enough to breathe.
Lyra leaned against a tree and closed her eyes. Her face was pale, her hands shaking slightly. Eira moved toward her with a recovery tonic, but Lyra shook her head. "I’m fine."
"Your energy output has dropped about thirty percent in the last twenty minutes," Eira said quietly. "If your filtration fails in this zone, corruption starts entering your channels. That’s not something you push through."
"I said I’m fine." Lyra’s voice was steady but tight. The voice of someone who knew exactly how bad things were and had decided that quitting was worse.
Ren walked over casually, as if he was just finding a spot to rest. He sat down against the tree next to hers, close enough that their shoulders were almost touching. Then he adjusted his own energy output — a subtle shift, barely noticeable. He widened his filtration field slightly, extending his clean-energy zone to overlap with Lyra’s position. By maintaining strong filtration in her immediate area, he reduced the corruption pressure on her channels, which meant her own filtration could do more with less.
It was the field equivalent of standing upwind of someone in a sandstorm.
Lyra’s breathing slowed after about thirty seconds. Her color improved. Her hands stopped shaking. She opened her eyes and looked at him.
She didn’t say anything. But her expression said she knew exactly what he had done, and why, and that he had done it without making it look like help so she wouldn’t have to feel like she needed it.
Ren looked at the trees. "The bark patterns in this section are different from the outer zone. More red veining."
Lyra almost laughed. "You’re terrible at pretending you’re not doing what you’re doing."
"I have no idea what you mean."
She smiled. Small. Tired. Real.

The sweep continued for another forty minutes. Lyra made it through. She was running on fumes by the end — thin filtration, heavy steps — but she didn’t stop, didn’t quit, and didn’t ask to be carried. Every meter she covered, she covered on her own.
Ren stayed near her for the rest of the sweep. Not obviously. He just happened to be in her general area, with his filtration running a little wider than necessary, giving her extra breathing room at every step.
When Selene called the end, Lyra sat down heavily and didn’t get up for three minutes. Eira was beside her immediately with the recovery tonic. This time Lyra took it.
"That was stupid," Eira said, checking her channels. "You should have taken the tonic an hour ago."
"Probably."
"Definitely."
Lyra looked at Ren across the clearing. He was drinking water, looking exactly like someone who had just finished a hard exercise and was tired like everyone else. Not like someone who had burned extra energy for two hours to shield another person’s filtration zone.
"Thank you," she mouthed. No sound. Just the shape of the words.
He raised his canteen slightly. You’re welcome.
— • —
On the other side of the clearing, Iris was running maintenance checks on her gear with her usual precision. She hadn’t said anything during the sweep. She hadn’t commented on Lyra’s struggle or Ren’s positioning.
But she had been two meters behind them for the entire second half. Close enough to feel the edge of Ren’s widened filtration field. Close enough to notice his energy output had been running about fifteen percent higher than his own protection required.
The note she added to her mental file on Ren Valis wasn’t about suspicion this time. It was about the way a boy who hid everything about himself kept choosing to spend his carefully rationed energy on protecting someone who couldn’t protect herself. That told her something about him that no combat test or foundation reading ever had.
She packed her gear and didn’t look at Ren again for the rest of the afternoon.
But she thought about it.

Author’s Note: Lyra fights through. Ren shields without showing. Iris sees more than she says. The corruption zone is pushing all of them — but some of them are being pushed closer together. Thanks for reading!
