Day seven. Morning warm-up before the group tests.
The atmosphere in the training hall had shifted over the week. On Day 1, seven strangers had walked into a sealed room and sat apart from each other like objects placed too carefully on a shelf. Now, seven days later, the distance had closed. Not completely — there were still edges, still silences, still the cold gap around Kaelen’s desk that nobody crossed — but the room had a rhythm now. People knew where to stand. Who to nod at. Where the tension lived.
Selene had them running individual technique drills — not scored, not ranked, just refinement. One at a time. She walked the line, watching each student work through their forms, correcting stances, adjusting energy flow, saying very little.
Ren was working through a standard energy circulation pattern when it happened.
The exercise was simple. Circulate energy from the seed outward through the root channels, loop it through the body, return it to the seed. A closed cycle. Nothing aggressive. Nothing that should have caused any problems at all.
Except that on the third loop, the energy moved too fast.
Not by much. Not enough that the circulation collapsed or his body strained. Just — faster than it should have been. Smoother. The energy flowed through his root channels the way water runs through pipes that have been cleaned and widened by something far more precise than ordinary cultivation.
Which, of course, they had been. By the System. Weeks ago.
The problem was that the difference was usually invisible. At normal output, the optimized channels behaved like slightly-better-than-average channels. Nothing a teacher would look at twice.
But today, for some reason, the efficiency spiked.
Maybe it was because his foundation had deepened further after yesterday’s push. Maybe the energy surge had shifted something inside him. Maybe he was just too close to the edge of Sprout, and the seed was responding to the pressure by running hotter than usual.
Whatever the cause, the result was clear. For about four seconds, Ren’s energy circulation ran at a level that belonged to someone who had been cultivating for months, not weeks.
And Kaia stirred.
— • —
The warmth in his chest pulsed. Not gentle. Urgent. A sharp, clear signal that arrived the same way it had during the dangerous surge yesterday — concern wrapped in heat, a feeling without words that said something is showing.
’I know,’ Ren thought. ’I feel it.’
He clamped down on the circulation immediately. Slowed the flow. Let the energy stutter slightly on purpose — a controlled wobble, like he had lost focus for a moment. Then he resumed at normal speed, rough edges back in place, the careful disguise pulled over the truth.
The whole thing lasted less than five seconds.
He exhaled slowly and kept drilling. His face showed nothing. A student who had lost concentration for a moment. Nothing unusual. Happened to everyone.
Cassian, two stations away, didn’t even look up. Yuelan was focused on her own forms. Iris was reading something on the side wall. Lyra was practicing in the far corner, her control clean and careful.
Nobody noticed.
Except one person.
Selene was standing six meters away, her back half-turned to him, correcting Kaelen’s energy cycling posture.
She did not turn around.
She did not stop what she was doing.
But Ren saw her hand pause, very briefly, against Kaelen’s shoulder. A half-second hesitation. The kind of pause someone makes when they hear a sound they weren’t expecting and decide not to look toward it immediately.
Then her hand moved again, and the correction continued as if nothing had happened.
Ren kept drilling.
But inside, his stomach sank.
’She felt it.’
Not with her eyes. With her cultivation sense. She was a Peak Stage 4 Bloodline Plant Lord — her awareness of energy patterns in the room was not something she had to activate. It was always on. And when Ren’s circulation had spiked for those four seconds, it must have registered as a brief, sharp note in an otherwise steady background.
She might not know what she felt. She might not even be sure it was him.
But the crack was there now. One more data point in the growing file that Selene Hart was building on the quiet student in the fourth seat.
— • —
The warm-up ended without further incident. Selene announced team assignments for the afternoon group tests and dismissed them for a break.
Before they left, she posted the team pairings on the screen. Three teams. Mixed deliberately — not by strength, not by background. By friction.
Team One: Ren, Lyra, Iris.
Team Two: Kaelen, Lin Yueying, Cassian.
Team Three: Yuelan, solo evaluator role.
Ren looked at the list. Lyra and Iris. The warmth track and the suspicion track, on the same team, with him in the middle.
’Of course,’ he thought. ’Because this week wasn’t complicated enough.’
Cassian leaned over and read the list. He glanced at Kaelen’s name next to his own and let out a low whistle. "Well. That’ll be fun."
Kaelen didn’t react. He was already walking out.
The group filtered through the door. Cassian clapped Ren on the shoulder. "You looked a little tight today."
"Tired," Ren said.
"Yeah, yesterday was rough. Get some food. You’ll be fine."
Ren nodded and left.
In the corridor, Kaia pulsed once more. Softer now. The urgent warning had faded. What remained was the steady, present warmth she always carried — quiet company, named and known, watching from inside.
’Thanks for the warning,’ he thought.
No answer. Just warmth, steadier than before, as if being acknowledged had made her more settled. Having a name for the warmth changed things. He couldn’t explain how, exactly, but every pulse felt a little more like communication now and a little less like a reflex.
Ren walked toward the front of the annex, his expression quiet, his thoughts already turning to the group tests. Lyra and Iris. On his team. Together.
Behind him, the training hall emptied.
One person stayed.
— • —
Selene stood in the empty training hall, arms folded, looking at nothing.
The formation grid was off. The dummies were still. The only sound was the faint hum of the annex’s protective wards, which she had long since learned to tune out.
She was not looking at the room.
She was looking at the data in her head.
Ren Valis. Eighteen years old. Bloodline Plant Lord. Germination Stage. No noble family. No known private training. Parents off-world. Background: unremarkable.
And yet.
Day one: foundation reading — third overall. Unusually balanced for his stage. Root spread too even. Energy quality too clean. She had flagged it and moved on.
Day three: combat technique — placed fifth. Inconsistent with his foundation score. But during the reaction drill, one block had been perfect. Not good. Perfect. The kind of muscle memory that did not develop in two weeks.
Day six: the push drill. His technique had run too smoothly under full pressure. Then the surge — an energy output spike that should have been impossible for a Stage 2 cultivator. She had considered intervening. He had shut it down himself. Fast. Precise. Like someone who knew exactly what was happening inside their own body and had the control to stop it.
And now, this morning: a four-second circulation spike during a basic warm-up. Small. Easy to miss. But she had not missed it.
Selene let out a slow breath.
She had been sent here to watch the Seven and identify anything unusual. The Alliance had been clear about that. Watch. Evaluate. Report anything that suggests the anomaly is deeper than the numbers.
She had expected to find strong students with rare talent, pushed by good families and expensive resources.
She had not expected Ren Valis.
He was not the strongest in the group — Kaelen’s raw numbers were higher. He was not the most refined — Lin Yueying’s energy quality was exceptional. He was not the most combative, the most controlled, or the most politically important.
But he was the one who did not make sense.
Every other student’s results told a story she could read. Family resources. Training time. Natural talent. Effort. The numbers matched the backgrounds, within normal variation.
Ren’s numbers matched nothing.
His foundation was too good for his history. His technique was too clean for his experience. His control slipped in ways that revealed more ability, not less. And there was something else — something harder to name. A quality in his energy she had never felt in a student before. A depth. A completeness. As if his seed had been growing under conditions she could not identify.
Selene unfolded her arms and walked toward her office.
She would not confront him. Not yet. Confrontation would only make him more careful, and he was already far too careful for an eighteen-year-old.
Instead, she would watch. More closely. More patiently.
And she would include his name in her next report to Caelan.
Not as a problem.
As a question.
