The door opened, and the room changed.
Not physically. Nothing moved. The desks stayed where they were. The light through the window didn’t shift. But the air inside the room became heavier, the way a space changes when someone with real weight walks into it.
A woman stepped through the doorway and stopped at the front of the class.
She was young-looking. Maybe early twenties, at most. That meant almost nothing in a world where cultivation slowed aging, but the effect was still striking. Long hair, white as ice, falling past her shoulders in a clean, unbroken line. Pale skin. Sharp features that were beautiful and cold at the same time, the way a winter morning is beautiful — clean and bright and not at all interested in keeping you warm.
She wore a simple instructor’s uniform. No accessories. No decoration. Nothing that asked to be noticed.
She didn’t need any of it.
Because the moment she stood still and looked at them, every person in the room understood the same thing at the same time.
She was strong.
She was strong. Really strong. Ren could feel it the moment she stood still — a quiet, constant pressure that filled the room without being aimed at anyone. The kind of strength that didn’t need to announce itself because everyone’s body noticed it before their brain caught up.
The slouching boy in the back row sat up straight. He didn’t seem to decide to do it. His body just did it on its own.
The fighter girl’s hand twitched toward her forearm, an old reflex, then stopped.
The noble girl put her device away.
Even the cold boy in the corner seemed to focus, just slightly, the way a blade tilts toward a sound.
Ren felt it too. A faint pressure against his senses, steady and even, like standing at the base of something very tall and looking up. Not hostile. Not even uncomfortable. Just... present. Undeniable.
And inside his chest, the warm ember reacted.
Not with unease. Not with alarm.
With recognition. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
A faint, quiet pulse — the way the seed sometimes stirred near things that shared something with its own nature. Ren had felt it before, in the realm, near certain plants or materials that carried traces of life energy. But this was stronger. Clearer. As if the ember inside him had sensed something in this woman and thought: same.
’She’s one of us,’ Ren thought. ’She’s a Bloodline Plant Lord.’
That realization hit harder than the pressure did.
— • —
The woman let the silence hold for exactly long enough to be uncomfortable.
Then she spoke.
"My name is Selene Hart."
Her voice was calm, clear, and cold. Not cruel. Not hostile. Just completely free of anything that could be mistaken for warmth.
"I am a Bloodline Plant Lord. Peak Stage 4. Seedling level."
She said it the way someone states their address. No pride. No weight. Just fact.
But the effect on the room was immediate.
The nervous girl by the window drew a sharp breath. The fighter’s eyes narrowed. Even the jade-still girl looked up for the first time.
Peak Stage 4. Seedling. That was higher than any teacher in this school. That was higher than most people any of them had ever been in the same room with.
And she was a Bloodline Plant Lord.
Not Bloodline. Not Plant. The same pathway they had all awakened. The same talent the world considered almost legendary.
She was what they could become. Or at least, what the best of them could become, if they survived long enough and worked hard enough.
Selene waited for the reactions to finish. She did not seem impressed by any of them.
"Starting today, I am responsible for your training, evaluation, and development as Bloodline Plant Lord cultivators. This is not a request. This is an assignment from people above this school, and you do not get to refuse it."
Nobody argued. Nobody even shifted in their seats.
"I will not waste your time. You will not waste mine. If you have questions, ask them when they matter. If you have complaints, keep them until you are strong enough for your complaints to mean something."
She looked across the room once, her pale eyes moving from one face to the next, pausing just long enough on each to make it feel like being measured by a scale.
When her gaze passed over Ren, he felt it.
Quick. Precise. The same kind of half-second evaluation the noble girl had given him earlier — but heavier. Deeper. As if Selene had looked at him and, in that one moment, read something she had not expected to find.
The pause on him lasted slightly longer than the others.
Then she moved on.
— • —
"For the next seven days," Selene said, "I will be testing each of you."
She let that sink in.
"The tests will cover your foundation, your energy control, your combat ability, your response under pressure, and your ability to work with others. Some will be done alone. Some will be done as a group. I will decide the format. You will not know the schedule in advance."
"At the end of the seven days, I will rank you."
That word landed in the room like a stone hitting water.
Rank.
The slouching boy’s grin faded. The fighter’s jaw tightened. The cold boy’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes sharpened.
"The rankings will determine your resource priority, training intensity, and my personal assessment of your potential. They are not permanent. But they are real."
"Those ranked higher will receive better materials, earlier access to training opportunities, and more of my time. Those ranked lower will receive less. This is not punishment. It is efficiency. I have seven of you and limited time. I will invest where the return is highest."
The nervous girl’s face went pale. The cold boy’s did not change at all.
She paused for one beat.
"The seven days begin now."
Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not after they had time to prepare, study, or plan.
Now.
— • —
The room was quiet after that. Not the nervous quiet from before Selene had arrived. A different kind. The kind of quiet that forms when seven young people realize, all at once, that the next seven days are going to determine something that matters.
The nervous girl’s hands were clenched in her lap. The noble girl was already thinking — Ren could almost see the calculations behind her eyes. The slouching boy looked at the ceiling, then at Selene, then at the ceiling again, as if deciding whether this was exciting or terrible. The fighter was perfectly still, ready. The jade-still girl had not moved, but her eyes were fully open now.
The cold boy sat exactly as he had before. Unmoved. Unsurprised. As if he had always expected something like this.
And Ren...
Ren sat in his forgettable middle seat and did what he always did.
He thought.
’Seven days. Foundation, combat, energy control, pressure, teamwork. Ranked at the end. Resources on the line.’
That part was manageable. He had trained. He had fought real things. He could perform well enough to look talented without looking impossible.
But that was not the real problem.
The real problem was standing at the front of the room with ice-white hair and pale eyes that had just paused on him a beat too long.
’She’s a Bloodline Plant Lord.’
He let that thought settle, because it changed everything.
A normal teacher could test his foundation and see strong results. Good technique. Solid energy control. A talented student. Nothing suspicious.
But Selene Hart was not a normal teacher. She had walked the same pathway. She had grown the same kind of seed. She knew, from personal experience, what a Bloodline Plant Lord’s growth was supposed to look like — from the inside.
Which meant she would also know what it was not supposed to look like.
The too-smooth technique. The too-clean energy flow. The foundation that was too deep for someone who had been cultivating for barely two weeks.
A normal teacher would see talent.
Selene Hart would see a question she couldn’t answer.
’Hiding from other teachers who has not walked same part is difficult but manageable,’ Ren thought. ’But Hiding from someone who has been exactly where I am, and knows what the path feels like from the inside. Sign, i could already feel the headache coming.’
He could already imagine it. She would watch him run through a basic technique and notice that his form was too clean for a two-week cultivator. She would test his foundation and find roots that had spread too far, too evenly, too fast. She would see the small things — the way his energy moved without hesitation, the way his body responded to stress — and she would know that none of it matched what a Stage 2 beginner should be able to do.
And she would not know why. But she would not stop looking until she found out.
He looked at Selene, who was now calmly preparing something on the front screen.
’...That is going to be very, very hard.’
The warm ember inside him pulsed once more. Quiet. Alert. As if it, too, understood that the rules of the game had just changed.
Seven days.
The clock had started.
