Seeing this, Yu Yong sighed inwardly. He realized he’d been too optimistic.

The ventilation duct looked like a critical entry point, but the risk was just too high. One small mistake and it would cost them their lives.

The quiet was shattered by another burst of machine gun fire.

Muzzle flashes bloomed from the firing ports on the factory’s front wall, hammering against the officers’ riot shields with a deafening CLANG.

Two more grenades were thrown out, nearly sending the two closest officers flying.

"Hahaha, you sons of bitches from the Patrol Department! What’s the matter, stopped charging?!"

"Don’t tell me you’re scared of dying! Did we scare you little cowards?!"

The brazen taunts echoed from inside the factory again, punctuated by the sharp SLAP of hands hitting flesh and the cries of hostages. Veins pulsed on every officer’s temples; they were on the verge of losing control.

Yu Yong gritted his teeth. As much as he hated to admit it, he knew the mission now depended entirely on Ruan Hui’s team and their raid through the secret passage.

A calm voice suddenly cut through the communications channel.

Yu Yong froze, and the other officers and squad leaders were stunned into silence.

The next instant, everyone on the slope turned or glanced toward the Third Squad, positioned at the rear of the right flank.

Their squad leader, Yang Wangtao, looked just as astonished, as if he was a half-beat behind everyone else.

When he snapped out of it, he followed their gaze to a spot two meters to his right.

A young man with a buzz cut, dressed in a bulletproof vest, was crouched on the ground. He wore a riot helmet and clutched a heavy, black metal riot shield. Sparks flew as machine gun rounds ricocheted off its surface.

As if sensing the attention, the man turned his head and met his gaze.

"Let me give it a try."

Lu Chao offered a small smile and said calmly, "I can’t guarantee it’ll work, but there’s at least a sliver of hope."

"Just give me a chance, Captain Yu. All of you."

As his words hung in the air, Yang Wangtao’s mouth fell open.

Many of the officers exchanged complicated looks. Even Yu Yong, who glanced back from the front line, had a shifting expression on his face.

"Are you sure?"

He hesitated, worried Lu Chao was acting on impulse. "Once you give yourself away, no one can help you," he warned.

"And even if you make it inside, Qiu Shan and his men will spot you easily. You’ll have to face all of them at once..."

Several squad leaders roared and followed suit, their black riot shields forming a mobile iron wall that absorbed the brunt of the sniper and machine gun fire.

Even when grenades landed nearby, they braced themselves, gritting their teeth and enduring the blasts.

Soon, a series of smoke grenades were thrown, spewing thick white fog that obscured the advance and confused Qiu Shan and his men inside the factory.
