The teenage girl poked her head out from behind the old man.

She let out a loud gasp of relief and scrambled out into the open.

"They are safe," the girl told the old farmer, pushing the heavy crossbow down toward the floor.

Kai looked at her and remembered her from the earlier rescue.

Her name was Thom.

It was traditionally a boy’s name, but she was definitely a scared teenage girl.

The old farmer grumbled and lowered his weapon.

Vienna stepped fully into the lantern light.

She rested her hands on her hips to offer them a little modesty, but the posture did not hide much at all.

The old man blinked twice.

"The thralls started digging at the old cellar doors an hour ago.

Eliza went deeper into the secondary catacombs to find a safer room for us.

She told us to wait here and guard the ladder."

Kai frowned and looked at the small group.

They were a very fragile bunch.

The old man could barely hold his bow, and Thom was shaking like a leaf in the wind.

He shifted his gaze back to the teenage girl.

She was sweating despite the cool air.

Her eyes looked glassy and unfocused.

She kept scratching frantically at her left forearm.

"Hey," Kai said softly, taking a slow step toward Thom.

"Show me your arm."
