Yena laughed softly and tossed a pebble at his boot.

"I get into plenty of trouble, Kai. But I have killed every single man who ever tried to put his hands on me without asking first. You might want to remember that before you get any funny ideas."

"I always ask nicely," Kai shot back, watching the way her chest rose and fell with her steady breathing.

"And I usually get a yes."

"You’re far too arrogant for a boy wandering a desert," Yena murmured.

The playful glint in her eyes betrayed her stern words.

"City boys talk a good game, but they usually panic when things get rough."

"I’m full of surprises," Kai promised her.

They rested until the sun began to dip lower in the sky, and the punishing heat finally broke.

Packing their gear back onto the horse, they resumed their trek through the bone yard.

The terrain grew much rougher as they navigated steep, sliding dunes and jagged rock formations hidden beneath the powder.

Climbing a particularly steep incline, Kai reached the top first and turned around to help his partner.

He offered his hand down to Yena.

She gripped his fingers tightly, and he pulled her up the slipping sand with a smooth motion.

Her boots lost traction near the crest, so she stumbled forward right into his chest.

Kai caught her easily by the waist, his hands resting firmly on her hips to keep them both from falling backward down the slope.

Yena gasped quietly and looked up into his dark eyes from only a few inches away.

The physical contact sent a sudden, noticeable jolt of tension zipping right between them.

"Careful," Kai whispered, keeping his hands right where they were.

"I would hate to see you break your neck before we even reach the city."

"I just slipped," Yena replied quickly, stepping back from his embrace with a slightly flushed face.

She brushed invisible sand from her trousers and cleared her throat. "Don’t let it go to your head."

’She’s definitely starting to like me,’ Kai thought, turning around to lead the way down the next dune.

They traveled side by side as the sky turned a shade of orange.

Playful banter continued easily between them, wrapping smoothly around their shared survival tasks.

They shared water, pointed out hidden traps in the terrain, and kept a close watch for more mutant bugs.

Kai found himself actually enjoying the journey as he appreciated Yena’s sharp wit and capable skills just as much as her obvious physical beauty.

Earning her trust was proving to be a highly entertaining challenge, and he fully intended to conquer her defenses long before they ever saw the high walls of Sunfall Oasis.

The air in the area slightly increased as a sandstorm formed in the middle of the place.

Kai looked at it and then grabbed Yena’s wrist to stop her from moving.

"Something’s there."

She dropped her pack onto the ground and spun her spear into a ready stance.

"It’s an ancient ghost made from betrayed worshippers," Yena warned him.

"Don’t let it touch your skin."

’Of course, the weather wants to kill us too,’ Kai thought, drawing his dagger.

Shadows moved quickly within the blinding sandstorm.

Twisted, ruined faces materialized right out of the dust.

They looked like dying people with cracked lips and sunken eyes.

Ghostly hands reached out toward Kai, and hollow voices echoed over the wind, begging for a single drop of water.

His throat suddenly felt like sandpaper.

The phantom was actively pulling the moisture right out of their bodies just by floating near them.

"Back to back," Kai ordered, stepping close to Yena.

She pressed her spine firmly against his shoulder blades.

Her spear began to glow with a fierce golden light.

Anti-undead runes carved deeply into the wood flared to life, pushing back the swirling gray shadows.

"Watch the left side," Yena commanded, thrusting her weapon forward.
