Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 4: Furnace Learns Too Late

Chapter 5

Pale vapor poured from the open slot and hugged the metal floor.

Severin held the breath already in his lungs. The vapor crossed the place where the flame had died without catching fire, then washed around his boots. His eyes watered. His mouth had already been dry; now bitter metal coated his tongue, and his throat tightened hard enough to make the next breath a choice.

A glow swelled inside the nearest flame slot.

He moved when the heat pulse flattened the vapor against the wall. The bandage around his left calf had stiffened in the furnace air. Every lifted step tugged at the skin beneath it, but no fresh blood warmed his boot.

The lane opened around a shaft with no visible bottom. Heat rolled up its black throat. A narrow strip of metal curved beside the drop, while fitted stone ran farther out.

Severin chose the stone. His sword stayed low in his right hand, the scraped point angled away from his left leg.

Air began drawing toward the shaft. The thinning vapor stretched across the plates, and something rushed through it.

Threat Vector cut the lunge down to a sidestep.

Severin took it and dropped the blade across the creature’s shoulder. Flexible plates folded beneath the edge. Dark blood streaked the steel as the low animal struck the floor on 6 limbs and wheeled around.

The cut had worked.

He struck the same shoulder again.

The hide tightened before the blade landed. The creature rolled with the force, spreading the impact through its plates. Steel skated away after opening little more than a line.

The rebound kicked Severin’s right elbow high. Jaws came for the gap beneath it.

Threat Vector gave him the high bite and a narrow corridor inside the forelimbs.

He waited.

A rear foot planted beside cooling runoff. Severin caught the water with Water Lash and snapped it sideways around the ankle. The foot slid. The body lagged behind the head, widening the corridor below its chest.

Still he waited.

The jaws opened wider.

He triggered Gust Vector. The burst struck his back and sent him in low. Severin turned the sword point forward and drove it through the open mouth. The blade stopped at the back of the skull.

The animal scraped across the stone. Its weight sagged around the steel.

He wrenched the sword from the skull and called Void Devour.

Black mist spilled around the body. The pull toward the shaft dragged vapor and heat through the darkness without disturbing it. When the mist withdrew, bare stone remained.

[Void Devour successful.]

[Target: Echohide Strider]

Whatever had hardened the creature against his second cut belonged in his hands before the chamber punished the mistake again.

Digest.

[Digestion Target: Echohide Strider]

[Digestion initiated.]

Severin crossed a short bridge toward the metal beside the shaft. Heat pressed through his damp boots. Behind him, another vent clicked open.

[Skill Grade: D — Developed Skill]

[Skill Name: Impact Echo]

The harmless second cut and the violent rebound finally fit together. Impact Echo gave him the shape of a force only after his body survived it. The skill offered no protection from the hit itself.

A vent ahead released another pale pulse across the stone. Severin waited for the draft to drag its leading edge toward the shaft, crossed the thinning cloud, and came out on the narrow metal path beside the well.

Farther around the shaft, suction caught his torn shirt and shortened his breath. The broad stone remained open, but he drove Gust Vector against the pull and landed on the same strip of metal beyond the vent.

The chamber curved. A shallow channel appeared along the outer wall, carrying cooling water across the stone. Dull contacts sat above it.

Severin swept the runoff aside with Water Lash and crossed to the inner strip before it returned.

He had returned to the same strip of metal after every obstacle.

The next slots opened toward it. Stone beside the path ticked as trapped heat spread underneath. Each shift had come only after the route worked.

Severin remained on the metal. Heat tightened the bandage against his calf. The vapor had left his eyes burning, and the draw from the shaft made every breath shallower. He repeated the answer until it looked like habit.

The exit appeared above a short ramp in the north quarter. A bridge crossed outward near its foot.

Something heavy waited between Severin and the rise.

The beast stood low on 4 thick legs, armored from neck to tail with overlapping plates. Its claws gripped the heated metal. Heat shimmered above its back as it lowered its head and shortened its breathing.

Severin advanced along the path he’d repeated around the well.

The beast rushed him.

He turned late, holding the route through another step.

Its tail swept right to left behind the turn. The heavy end slammed across his right lower ribs.

Pain folded him around the blow. His breath vanished halfway in. He stayed on his feet until air came back in a thin, ugly pull.

"Damn."

He activated Impact Echo. The tail’s force pattern locked into the skill while the bruise was still forming.

During the follow-through, the near foreleg stretched. For a breath, the plates opened along a seam behind it. The tail was already returning, and the beast’s balance kept the gap beyond his reach.

A wall vent spat pale mist across the metal. Clear membranes slid over the beast’s eyes. Its nostrils narrowed, and its breathing changed before it entered the cloud.

The shaft drew harder. Mist stretched between the beast and the dark well. Its stance widened against the pull, and a heavy pulse showed along its throat.

Severin gave ground along the same path. His calf ached beneath the hard bandage. His ribs hurt when he rotated.

He left Pain Partition untouched. The pain told him when his left foot began to turn and when his torso tried to protect the bruise.

Cold rain burst through ceiling grates above the ramp.

It struck hot metal with a hiss and soaked Severin’s shirt against his back. Steam rolled off the beast’s plates. Its claws dug deeper, and the skin around them flushed dark red.

A stone plate cracked between them. A corner dropped and stayed low.

The beast shortened its steps around the break. Its rear feet began landing in the same narrow band.

Orange light grew inside the slots facing Severin’s route. Suction built with it. The bridge near the ramp remained clear.

Threat Vector opened an outward line across the clear bridge.

Now.

Gust Vector hurled him across the bridge to the lower path by the wall.

The beast followed.

It left the heat it had claimed and entered a mess the chamber hadn’t finished clearing. Low pressure dragged lingering mist through residual warmth. Freezing water ran through the cracked plates and collected beside the wall.

The beast narrowed its nostrils against the mist, spread its feet in the cold runoff, then shifted its weight again before the last change had settled.

Its tail came right to left, aimed at the same ribs.

Threat Vector gave Severin a turn instead of a brace.

He rolled with the sweep and triggered Impact Echo.

His back turned with the sweep instead of fighting it, and his hips followed. The tail still drove pain through the existing bruise, but his feet stayed beneath him and his breath didn’t disappear.

The beast’s near rear foot skidded. Its far rear foot stamped down beside the widening crack.

Contacts above the channel began to hum.

Severin hooked the runoff with Water Lash and dragged it beneath the beast’s rear feet. He released the water before the pulse arrived.

Blue-white current entered the channel.

The pooled runoff flashed. The beast jerked its hindquarters clear and threw its weight onto the forelimbs. The near forefoot planted beside the old crack. Stone split farther under the load.

The hum died. The light vanished from the water.

Severin waited until the channel went dark.

With most of its weight thrown onto the forelegs, the beast tried to turn into a low bite and body check. The near foreleg couldn’t retract cleanly. The seam behind it opened again.

Threat Vector reduced the recovery attack to a lateral step.

His lead boot found dry stone. Severin slipped past the jaws and drove the sword sideways behind the foreleg bearing most of the beast’s weight.

The point passed between plates and entered the chest.

The beast’s shoulder carried past him as its strength failed. Severin pivoted with the mass, locked his left hand beneath his right on the hilt, and let the body fall away from his bruised side.

It collapsed across the broken stone.

He pulled the sword free. Freezing rain thinned the blood along the blade into dark streaks.

Black mist rolled from Severin and climbed over the plated body. It poured beneath the overlapping armor until the beast vanished inside the darkness. When the mist withdrew, the cracked stone was empty.

[Void Devour successful.]

[Target: Moltstorm Varan]

He wanted the instinct that had carried the beast through every hazard before the next gate.

He chose Digest.

[Digestion Target: Moltstorm Varan]

[Digestion initiated.]

Severin climbed the exit ramp and stopped on the highest dry step. The chamber continued cycling below him. He kept the sword ready while a vent closed and another began to glow.

The bandage showed no fresh spread, but his calf still pulled when he turned. A deep breath pressed hard against the bruise beneath his right ribs. His eyes had stopped watering, but his throat felt scraped raw. He swallowed and found almost no moisture. Then he rolled his shoulders against the weight settling into them.

[Skill Grade: C — Refined Skill]

[Skill Name: Hazard Attunement]

The beast’s changes no longer looked separate. It had rebuilt itself around the danger pressing hardest, and every overlap had pulled the response out of shape. Severin understood the instinct, not the timing. He left Hazard Attunement untouched.

The gate opened onto broken land beneath a pale sky.

A stream cut through the nearest low ground. Stone heights rose on either side, their upper shelves hidden behind fractured ridges. Beast packs fought across the region, too widely scattered for Severin to count from the threshold.

The closest pack had been driven into a narrowing strip between the stream and a wall of rock.

Another charge struck its front line.

The line bent.
