Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 19: Prize beneath the Fault Plates

Chapter 20

The boar wrenched its head sideways.

Its right tusk shuddered in Severin’s left hand. Fault plates ground above the shoulder, pinching Wisdom’s Edge where the blade had entered beneath the lifted edge. The animal’s right forehoof tore deeper into the clay, but the twist only opened the line already in front of him.

Severin changed the angle of his wrist and drove the sword inward and slightly back.

Pale steel crossed the upper chest. Resistance thickened for less than the length of his next breath, then gave.

Its body locked around a broken exhale. Its forelegs folded. Severin kept hold of the tusk and turned the head down as the weight followed, lowering over 1 ton of plate and muscle without letting it crash onto the blade. The right shoulder struck first. Clay compressed beneath the plate with a dull crunch, but the skull, tusks, and layered back remained intact.

A final rasp left its throat. The tension in the tusk vanished from his palm.

Severin held the head in place through the last small shudder. Warm blood moved around the blade beneath the plate. The chest failed to rise again, and no pulse pushed back through the ivory in his grip.

Wisdom’s Edge came free with a brief wet scrape. He moved the bloodied blade clear of the body before releasing the Void.

Dense black mist poured over the boar.

It swallowed the lifted shoulder plate first, then the dark hide beneath it. The curve of the tusk disappeared from Severin’s hand. Mist closed across the body from both sides until the plates were only broken gray shapes inside blackness.

Nearby sounds dulled. Water ticking somewhere in the wall became faint, and the scrape of the last settling hoof stopped altogether.

The body gave no further movement. Severin watched the mist close over every visible edge until no plate, tusk, or strip of hide remained outside it.

Blackness contracted once and vanished.

Empty clay remained where the boar had fallen. The sudden absence left Severin’s left hand open over nothing. A dark smear marked the floor beside his boot, and fresh blood still lined the lower edge of Wisdom’s Edge.

[Void Devour successful.]

[Target: Faultback Boar]

So that was its name. Severin checked the empty patch of floor for a severed plate, a strip of hide, or any other fragment the Void had failed to take. Only blood already spilled outside the body remained.

Digest.

[Digestion Target: Faultback Boar]

[Digestion initiated.]

He lowered Wisdom’s Edge beside his right leg. A fresh bead gathered along the lower edge of the blade. It swelled, pulling more blood toward itself, but had not yet fallen when the next block arrived.

[Digestion Target: Faultback Boar]

[Digestion Progress: 100%]

[Digestion complete.]

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Grade: F — Nascent Skill]

[Skill Name: Seismic Ping]

Severin knew how to trigger it. A pulse through connected solid would return rough direction and scale. A gap ended the path; identity and a map lay beyond what it could provide.

The principle was clear. Reading the result would still take practice.

A shallow red line crossed his left palm where ivory had ground against skin. He flexed the fingers once, then faced the descent.

He had crossed enough Rank thresholds to recognize reconstruction. This acquisition settled without the bone-deep lock that had accompanied them. The new Skill joined what he already owned without remaking him around it.

Blood slipped from Wisdom’s Edge and struck the clay.

Severin turned toward the descending throat.

Size had not been the boar’s only advantage. Now he knew the exact source of the correction he had seen behind the stone spur. Understanding the Skill’s principle did not tell him how much detail he could separate on his initial attempt.

He stepped to the mouth of the descent and crouched. The throat ran down for 3 paces before curving beyond the reach of the gray light. Packed clay covered most of the floor, but an exposed rib of stone joined the wall to the slope below. The exposed rib continued to the bend instead of breaking into loose blocks.

He kept Wisdom’s Edge in his right hand, set the point away from his leg, and placed his left palm against the rib.

Cold, slightly damp stone pressed grit into the heel of his hand. He let the side fissures and the chamber behind him fall outside his intent, then directed the new Original along the connected path descending ahead.

The chamber stayed still and silent. Dust remained where it lay around his fingers.

The return arrived all at once and made poor sense for a fraction of a second. It carried no image or measured distance. He caught open volume first: ahead, lower, and too broad to be another narrow passage. Another irregularity clung to the same return somewhere to the right.

Severin held the contact long enough to separate them. The larger answer remained a hollow. The smaller one stayed blurred, too coarse to distinguish a break from an opening.

His initial reading tried to make the smaller signal into another opening. A moment longer against the stone dissolved that certainty. The Skill had returned a discontinuity, nothing more, and Severin discarded the shape his mind had supplied.

The coarse result did not change the route. Ahead, the direct descent still led to the only space large enough to matter. The right-hand irregularity could wait until he stood close enough to see what the pulse could not name.

He released the Original and lifted his palm. Clay grit clung to the damp skin. He rubbed it away with his thumb as he rose.

Without the Faultback Boar, the guardian chamber looked wider. Blood on the floor proved something had died here, but no witness had seen what took the body or where it went.

Severin brought Wisdom’s Edge low beside his right thigh and entered the descending throat. Gray light followed the initial step, then weakened against the bend.

Beyond the bend, the hollow and the blurred break to its right remained out of sight.
