Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 34: Goddess Finishes Dying

Chapter 35

Morning light pressed through the low canvas shelter in pale strips.

The shelter had gone up on dry ground south of the broken stream. Four short poles held the canvas above folded blankets, a water jug, two bowls, and the food left from dawn. A second blanket lay rolled near the rear pole where Saelith had slept while villagers took the pale-stone watch. No one had crossed that stone. The cut, the cord, the bait, and the dragged groove remained where they had been.

Alicia sat beside Severin with her tail curved clear of a guy rope. The borrowed trousers had been opened and stitched at the back for it. Her silver hair was clean now, though the morning wind kept lifting loose strands across one cheek.

She had eaten twice the day before, slept through most of the night, and walked to the stream without needing to be carried. Tressa had checked her before they left Mereford, pressed two fingers to her wrist, and made her cross the shelter room once without holding the wall. The soreness from their first night remained in the care Alicia used when she settled on the blanket, not in her balance.

Saelith stood beyond the shelter on the last dry stones. Her gray-green coat had dried unevenly along the hem. She had eaten under the canvas and slept while two villagers traded the watch from the south side of the pale stone. Now one of them waited farther back with a covered cup and a folded message cloth while Saelith watched the northward seep.

[Noema: Varexia’s digestion is about to complete, My Lord.]

Severin set his cup down.

The warning did not change the cut or the water. It changed what would happen inside him.

He looked once at the shelter poles, Alicia, the villagers, and the marks Saelith had preserved. Then he turned toward the broad shelf of bare stone east of the stream.

"Stay by the pale rock," he told Alicia.

Her ears rose. "Yes, Master."

"Keep everyone behind the shelter," he told Saelith. "Watch the cut."

Saelith studied the stone he had chosen. It lay several dozen paces from the cord and beyond the loose bank. "I can see both from the western edge."

"Use it."

Severin crossed the dry ground alone.

The stone shelf was broad enough that one bad step would not reach mud, roots, canvas, or another body. He stopped near its center and lowered himself before the warning inside him became pain. One knee touched stone. His left boot stayed planted. His right hand hovered near the ground without taking weight.

Alicia remained beside the pale rock. Her tail had gone still.

Saelith moved to the western edge and raised one hand. The villagers withdrew behind the shelter without needing another order.

The last piece of Varexia gave way.

[Digestion Target: Varexia]

[Digestion Progress: 100%]

[Digestion complete.]

The body and soul the Void had held as Varexia broke down completely.

No face appeared. No voice cursed him. No battle returned.

The first acquisition opened before him.

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Grade: F — Nascent Skill]

[Skill Name: Faultspark]

Understanding struck cleanly. Direct touch would reveal one hidden weakness and the direction from which it could be stressed. The Skill supplied no force, no break, and no experience using it.

The next block followed before he could examine the first.

Linkglint followed, then Blight Prick and Ruin Knell.

The names rose through Grade E. Fracture Sense. Bond Fatigue. Deterioration Sense. Peril Alarm.

Grade D replaced them. Fault Inscription. Bond Erosion. Blight Infusion. Ruin Forewarning.

The pressure gathered behind Severin’s eyes without becoming memory. Each Original arrived with its own shape, limits, and intuitive use, but none carried the years Varexia had spent wielding it.

Grade C came next, then B, then A.

Fault Appraisal. Link Attrition. Decay Turbulence. Impact Adaptation.

Failure Lattice. Connection Rend. Ruinbrand. Catastrophe Endurance.

Fracture Cartography. Lattice Severance. Entropic Cascade. Calamity Tempering.

The blocks accelerated. He stopped trying to hold every name in immediate thought. Ownership did not require panic.

Grade S followed with Faultline Command, Network Rupture, Withering Mantle, and Hazard Acclimation.

Grade SS brought Cataclysmic Fault, Nexus Abscission, Ruin Continuum, and Disaster Symbiosis.

Grade SSS ended the lower cascade with Cosmoclasm, Cosmic Disjunction, Entropy Imperium, and Apocalypse Chorus. Their authority was broad enough that the limits mattered more than the promise.

At last, the names he knew appeared.

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Grade: SSSS — Primordial Skill]

[Skill Name: Kharaxis — The Law by Which Worlds Break]

The root of fracture settled into him without Varexia’s command of it.

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Grade: SSSS — Primordial Skill]

[Skill Name: Velkrath — The Severance Between All Things]

Connections, severance, and the difference between a link and the things it joined became intuitively clear, then stopped at the edge of untested use.

[New Skill Acquired.]

[Acquisition Source: Void Devour]

[Skill Grade: SSSS — Primordial Skill]

[Skill Name: Eschara — The Ashes After the Final End]

He understood the shape of Eschara, but no rot spread across the stone beneath him.

The cascade ended, and for one breath nothing moved.

[Noema: All thirty-nine captured Originals Skill have acquired, My Lord. No duplicate was found.]

He now held fifty-one Originals and four Copies. Nothing from Varexia had entered the Archive.

Then the accumulated weight reached his body.

[Evolution Rank advanced.]

[Previous Rank: Rank 6 — Transformed]

[↓]

[Current Rank: Rank 4 — Exalted]

[Existence reconstruction complete.]

[Physical and spiritual parameters reinforced.]

Severin’s back locked.

His abdomen drew tight enough to stop his breath. The contraction ran through his ribs, shoulders, arms, hips, and thighs in one connected seizure. His left boot ground against stone. Grit burst from beneath the sole.

He put his right palm down before his balance could choose for him.

The stone answered with a sharp crack.

Alicia took half a step.

"Stay."

She stopped at once. "Yes, Master."

The reconstruction drove through him again.

His Core did not expand like a vessel being filled. It was rebuilt around a scale his old body could not have held. Pressure moved through channels that had existed a moment earlier and returned wider, cleaner, and harder to restrain. His heartbeat struck once against the change, then found a new rhythm.

Severin kept his weight low.

He did not fight the contraction by standing. He let it pass through his spine and legs while his fingers bit into the stone. The shallow crack beneath his palm spread the width of two fingers, then stopped.

Water slapped once inside the worked cut.

Saelith did not look away from it.

The next breath came too quickly. Severin forced the one after it slower.

Air entered, held for one count, and left under control.

The pressure inside his Core settled by degrees. Strength remained everywhere his body touched itself. Shoulder against coat. Tongue against teeth. The pull of cloth across his knees. Even stillness carried more force than it had before.

Fine control first.

He released his smallest finger from the stone, then the next.

His hand opened one finger at a time until only his palm remained flat. He lifted it without pushing.

The stone stayed whole beneath the shallow crack.

Severin shifted his right knee the width of his hand. The movement wanted to travel farther. He stopped it.

He planted his right boot deliberately, felt the weight pass through heel and sole, then rose without throwing himself forward.

The canvas snapped once in the wind. Water ran through the cut. Alicia drew a careful breath beside the pale rock. He heard each sound without losing the others. His body could cross more distance before another person answered, but the morning itself had not slowed for him.

He stood still.

Alicia watched him with both ears angled forward. She had obeyed, but her hands were clenched at her sides.

Severin flexed his fingers once. Bent one knee. Turned his right foot on the stone without grinding it. His coat still fit. His hands remained his hands. Black hair fell across his forehead in the same way it had before.

No female shape. No Goddess body. No borrowed face.

Only greater weight held under control.

"You may come closer," he said.

Alicia crossed the space quickly, then slowed before the cracked stone. "Are you hurt, Master?"

"No."

Her eyes moved over his face, shoulders, and hands. "You feel different, Master."

"I am stronger."

She stepped to his side but did not touch him until his palm settled between her shoulders. Her tail looped once around his boot.

Saelith remained at the western edge. "The stone moved under you. The cut did not."

Severin looked toward the stream. The northward seep still ran through the worked channel. The cord remained under its root. No new break crossed the mud or reached the shelter.

"Mark this crack," he said. "No one steps on it until you know whether it runs deeper."

Saelith picked up a pale stone marker from beside her boot and placed it several paces short of the fracture. She marked the danger people could see. She did not name what had happened inside him.

Severin turned his attention inward.

Thirty-nine new Originals sat beside the twelve he already owned. Four Copies remained separate. The thirty-nine Skills had carried him across two Rank thresholds and rebuilt him once, with no pause between them. The count mattered. A name mattered when it met a real problem.

"Group the new Skills by use," he said.

Alicia looked up at him. Saelith glanced once from the cut. Neither heard the answer.

[Noema: The new Originals divide into four primary families, My Lord.]

[Noema: Fault Skills reveal, mark, map, command, or collapse structural weakness. Link Skills perceive, weaken, sever, or rupture connections. Decay Skills detect, spread, or govern deterioration. Calamity Skills warn of, endure, adapt to, or coordinate genuine destructive events.]

That was enough.

"Which of them can help at the stream?"

[Noema: Fault Appraisal. Deterioration Sense. Ruin Forewarning. Connection Rend.]

"The highest Grades?"

[Noema: You possess them, My Lord, but your current Rank limits their expression. Full use remains available through Grade A. The higher Grades are restricted.]

That was enough warning. A new name did not make him Varexia, and intuitive understanding did not give him her practice.

Fault Appraisal could read an accessible structure. Deterioration Sense could identify ongoing decay. Ruin Forewarning could warn of a true ruin already forming. Connection Rend could cut a valid exposed link.

None of them was the next tool.

The cord had dragged the groove. The knot still held the bait. Tool cuts and boot prints marked the same road north. He needed to learn which marks came from the same hand and which had only crossed later. The new Skills could test faults, rot, danger, or exposed links. None could tell him whether the same hand had cut the bank and tied the cord.

Unveiled Reality remained untouched and better suited.

"Varexia’s memories."

[Noema: Varexia’s memories are available through Void Recall, My Lord. No memory has been opened.]

A memory could contain a lie Varexia believed, a truth she misunderstood, or something useful. Opening all of it now would bury the cut beneath a dead Goddess’s life.

"Leave them closed."

[Noema: Yes, My Lord.]

"The Goddess body pattern."

[Noema: One Creator-made Goddess physiology pattern is available to Void Override. No pattern has been selected, My Lord.]

Severin looked down at his own hand. Human fingers. The dragon tattoo remained beneath his shirt.

He had no reason to replace a body he knew with one he had never tested.

"Leave it unselected."

[Noema: Yes, My Lord.]

"The Reserve."

[Noema: Varexia’s remaining bound Core Essence has entered the Void Reserve, My Lord.]

No number appeared.

Severin left it there. Whatever bound Core Essence remained after Varexia’s final battle now belonged to the Reserve.

He opened a compact status panel.

[Name: Severin Morcant]

[Race: Human]

[Evolution Rank: Rank 4 — Exalted]

[Core Essence: 100%]

The panel closed.

Alicia had watched his face through the private exchange. "Is it finished, Master?"

"Yes."

"May I stay beside you, Master?"

"You already are."

Her ears lifted. She moved close enough for her shoulder to touch his coat.

Saelith finished placing the marker and looked toward the shelter. "The villagers can keep the same line. I want the cracked stone left alone until I check it from the side."

"Do it after we leave."

Her gaze shifted north. "You are going to the cord."

"Yes."

Severin stepped off the cracked patch with less force than he had once used to cross a room. The first placement landed cleanly. The second did not crush grit beneath his heel.

He stopped beside the western edge and looked across the preserved ground.

"What remains strongest?" he asked.

Saelith pointed without crossing the safe stones. "The cord and knot. The cut faces have held. The dragged groove has softened at one edge, but the direction is still readable. Two boot-print rims remain under the root shelf."

"The bait?"

"Still tied. The scent is weaker."

Alicia’s tail moved once behind Severin. She studied the cord and the safe stones Saelith indicated instead of staring at a change she could not name. Her place beside him had not vanished when his body changed. Neither had her need to watch where she put her boots.

"Show me the cord first," Severin said.

Saelith stepped onto the known dry stones.

Severin followed at a measured pace. Alicia fell into place beside him, one step back where the path narrowed.

He wanted the people behind the cut alive. Dead, they could no longer name the roads they used, the records they kept, the employers who paid them, or the next hand in the chain.

He placed his boot on the first dry stone before the cord.
