Chapter 6 - You've got potential, kid

The sun hung low over the stadium, bathing the pitch in gold.

Nathan sat on the bench, hands clasped tightly between his knees, feeling the tremors running through his fingers.

The friendly had started at a breakneck pace. The Championship side—tough, disciplined, mean—played like they had a point to prove. Leeds matched their intensity, but it was a battle of inches, every loose ball fought over like a scrap of meat between wolves.

Nathan barely heard the shouts from the coaches or the chanting from the scattered fans in the stands. His focus tunneled in on the green battlefield in front of him.

But then adrenaline surged through him, snapping him upright.

He stripped off his bib, jogging toward the assistant who clipped the substitution tag to his wrist.

Nathan sprinted onto the field, the world tilting for a heartbeat under the roar of scattered applause.

Thud! — an opponent clattered into him chasing a 50/50 ball, leaving his ribs aching.

Nathan stumbled back to his feet, chest heaving.

The Championship players weren't just faster—they were smarter, meaner. They pressed him like vultures sensing weakness. His mind screamed at him to move quicker, think sharper.

The ball came to him again, fizzed in at knee height.

He spotted the run: their striker bursting between two defenders, a fraction of a second away from slipping free.

A clean, slicing pass split the defense like a razor through silk.

The stadium erupted into noise, players mobbing the striker, clapping Nathan on the back as they jogged back to restart.

Nathan stood there, blinking, heart thundering.

The final whistle blew not long after.

Victory.

As players shook hands and swapped jerseys, Nathan walked off the field slowly, savoring every second.

His legs felt like lead. His chest ached. His shin throbbed from a late tackle.

Grayson found him near the dugout, arms folded, expression unreadable.

Nathan braced himself.

The coach stared at him for a long moment before speaking, voice low and gruff.

"You've got potential, kid," Grayson said. His mouth twitched, just slightly. "Rough edges. Plenty of 'em. But there's something there."

Nathan swallowed hard, nodding silently.

Grayson clapped a hand on his shoulder—Thud—heavy but not unfriendly.

"I'm adding you to the first-team squad for the Championship opener," he said simply. "Don't make me regret it."

Then he walked away, leaving Nathan standing there, half-stunned, half-electrified.

The stadium was almost empty by the time Nathan finished his cooldown jog.

The air was cooler now, dusk settling in, a soft violet hue stretching across the sky.

Nathan sat in the dugout, pulling his boots off slowly.

Each movement hurt. Each muscle screamed.

But somewhere deep inside, past the exhaustion and the pain, a fire had been lit.

Small. Unsteady.

But real.

The road ahead was brutal. He knew that.
