- Chapter 1: Verso
The afternoon sunlight seeped through the high end curtains of Verso’s new room, painting his room golden.
Verso sat up in bed, letting out a long groaning stretch that made his joints pop like bubble wrap.
"Ugh, nothing feels better than spending the entire day mauling Sirens."
Yesterday, after the swamp incident and the lobby standoff, Verso had retreated to his room for a much needed shower and a deep dive into the Lost Island Realm.
While the rest of the Academy was likely socializing or asleep, Verso had spent the entire night and most of his morning hunting in the Lost Island, killing Lost Sirens to farm for Elite rank fillers.
As he pulled up his system window he could see a new Lost Siren added to his collection, as a big smile appeared on his face.
’This makes all the trouble worth it... I’m finally gathering enough fillers to start synthesizing some of my Elite beasts.’
The thought of his next synthesis project provided enough dopamine to kickstart his brain as he rolled out of bed and headed for the bathroom.
After a long, steaming shower that finally felt like it scrubbed away the dirt and phantom sensation of centipede legs, he stood in front of his room mirror.
He pulled on the new clothes that he had bought with Moon — a chic dark charcoal hoodie made of some special beast silk and tailored trousers that fit him perfectly.
He looked... different. As with this new look, he did not look like the homeless kid from Meridian City anymore. He looked like he actually belonged in this place with all the other elites.
"Hmmm... not so bad," he murmured, adjusting his collar.
"Fake it till you make it, I guess."
He turned his attention to his dressing table. Three pulsing blue attribute crystals sat there, reflecting the sunlight as they pulsed a slow rhythmic blue
He had already tucked the red glowing ability crystal safely into a locked drawer by his bed, but these three were his ticket back to having some sort of financial stability.
The only problem? He had no idea how to sell them. In Emerald City, you had auction houses built on every single street where you could list your items. But in Phoenix City, he had not seen a single auction house after walked through the financial district for hours.
’I need a guide.’
Verso grabbed the crystals, walked out into the hall, and hammered on the door next to his.
"Hey Moon! Open up!"
The door flew open almost instantly. Moon stood there, wearing a silk shirt and trousers that looked like they cost more than Verso’s net worth. His red eyes were slightly bloodshot, looking as if he had also just woken up from a deep sleep.
"Do you have a fucking death wish, scum?" Moon greeted him with his usual warmth.
The door was open wide enough for Verso to catch a glimpse of Moon’s room. It was a chaotic mess of discarded clothes, empty energy drink bottles and expensive watches laying on the bed.
’No way... we have the exact same floor plan, and he has already turned it into a dump...’ Verso thought.
"Want to go hunting today?" Verso asked with a smile, trying not to get caught.
"Maybe we can get something good."
Hearing his request, Moon froze. He narrowed his eyes, leaning against the doorframe as he analyzed Verso like a suspicious beast.
"What the fuck do you want?" Moon asked flatly.
"There is no fucking way you asked me to hunt after shouting how much you hated it yesterday."
Verso let out a dry cough, his smile wavering.
"Umm, yeah. So, I also wanted to sell those three attribute crystals we got yesterday... and I don’t really know where to go."
"Huh. That’s it?" Moon’s suspicion vanished instantly as a wide, shark like grin spread across his face.
"Give me ten minutes. Don’t move."
SLAM.
The door shut in Verso’s face as he stood in the hallway, blinking.
’Is it really that easy? Is the promise of violence the only way to get this guy to move?’
Exactly ten minutes later, the door swung open again. Moon was fully dressed, sunglasses perched on his nose, looking like a model who was ready for a photoshoot.
"Let’s go, scum."
Moon led the way to the lobby with a spring in his step, acting as if he had just signed the deal of the century. As they reached the white marbled lounge, Moon did not head for the exit. Instead, he snapped his fingers at a man in a crisp tuxedo standing near the desk.
"Hey! You!" Moon shouted.
The man walked over instantly, bowing slightly.
"How can I assist you, Mr. Bloodveil?"
Moon pointed a thumb at Verso.
"My friend here wants to sell a few attribute crystals. Handle it quick."
"Certainly, Sir." the man said, turning to Verso with a professional smile as he pulled a high end tablet from his jacket.
"If you could provide us with your bank details, Sir? We will have our internal appraiser verify the attributes and transfer the credits to your account within the hour."
Verso stood there, paralyzed. He looked at the man, then at the tablet, and finally at Moon, who was currently wearing the biggest, most self satisfied grin Verso had ever seen.
’Wait a second...’
The Star Complex was one of the most expensive housing complex in the city built specifically for students training to be hunters. Of course they had an internal exchange service for their elite residents.
Moon never needed those ten minutes to get ready for a trip to a merchant — he just knew that by the time Verso realized the market was literally in their lobby, he had already agreed to go hunting again.
’This bastard played me...’ Verso thought, his eye twitching.
Moon clapped him on the shoulder, leaning in close.
"So, about that hunt... I was thinking about resuming my hunt for the Poison Dagger."
His words making a cold shiver run down his spine as he thought about the creepy disgusting centipedes again.
