The command was a lifeline. Lucian grabbed onto it like a drowning man grabs onto driftwood.

He stepped back. His entire body was shaking with the effort it took to move away from her. His breathing was ragged. His hands were clenched into fists that looked like they might explode.

But he stepped back.

And the line...barely...held.

Lilith was staring at him with even more fear now. She’d just witnessed exactly how close he’d come to losing control. She’d seen the struggle. She’d understood that it would have been easy for him to simply take what he wanted.

And that understanding terrified her more than anything else.

Sebastian was sitting rigidly in his chair, his entire body tense, his dark eyes locked on Lilith with an intensity that made her feel like she was being physically touched.

Nicholas returned to his seat, his composure settling back over him like a cloak despite the storm raging underneath.

"You’ll need to rest," Nicholas said, his voice back to its smooth, measured tone. "And eat. The pack has not been taking care of you adequately."

Lilith didn’t respond. She was too confused. Too afraid. Too caught off-guard by this gentleness masking such obvious desperation.

"We will need more of your help throughout our stay in Shadowmere," Nicholas continued. "You will attend to our everyday needs. Food. Cleaning. Other things. We’ll send for you when we require your assistance."

It was a different kind of possession. Not sexual, but intimate in a different way. He was claiming her time. Claiming her attention. Claiming her presence in their space.

Lilith bowed her head in acknowledgment.

"You’re dismissed," Nicholas said quietly.

She turned and walked toward the door, her movements stiff and uncertain. Behind her, she could feel three pairs of eyes tracking her every movement.

She could feel Lucian’s desperation like a physical pressure. Could feel Sebastian’s focused intensity. Could feel Nicholas’s possessive awareness.

She could feel them not claiming her, and that restraint was somehow more terrifying than if they had.

When she reached the door, she paused for a moment. She wanted to turn around. Wanted to understand what was happening. Wanted to ask why they were different.

But she didn’t.

She simply opened the door and left the room.

The moment the door closed behind her, Lucian stood up with an almost violent movement.

He walked to the window and pressed his forehead against the cool glass, his entire body vibrating with the effort of maintaining control.

"How long?" he asked, his voice raw.

"As long as it takes," Nicholas said.

"I almost lost it," Lucian said. "When she looked at me, I almost..."

"I know," Nicholas said. "But you didn’t. You held the line."

Sebastian was still sitting rigidly in his chair, his breathing gradually slowing, his eyes still locked on the door she’d exited through.

"She’s ours," Sebastian said quietly. "She doesn’t understand it yet. She’s afraid. But she’s ours. The bond is real. She’ll understand it eventually."

"Eventually isn’t now," Lucian said, his voice sharp with frustration. "My wolf is losing his mind. Zev wants to hunt her down right now and..."

"Zev can wait," Nicholas said, his tone brooking no argument. "We take this slow. We show her that we’re different than she expects. We show her that we want more than just her body."

"We want her body too," Sebastian said, his voice dark. "Don’t pretend we don’t."

"Of course we do," Nicholas acknowledged. "But we want more than that. And if we move too fast, if we scare her, if we push her the way we did during the contract, we lose her. And I will not lose her."

The finality in his voice was absolute.

Outside, in the corridor, Lilith walked back to her assigned room with her mind spinning.

She didn’t understand what had just happened. She didn’t understand why they hadn’t immediately claimed her. She didn’t understand why Nicholas had asked questions instead of giving orders.

And most confusing of all: she didn’t understand why part of her had wanted him to lose control. Why part of her had wanted Sebastian’s kiss to continue. Why part of her had responded to the intensity of Lucian’s gaze.

She was supposed to hate them. She was supposed to be afraid of them.

But as she entered her room and closed the door behind her, she realized that fear wasn’t the only thing she was feeling.

And that realization terrified her more than anything else.

The main hall of Shadowmere pack compound had been transformed.

Long tables lined the space in careful arrangement, positioned according to pack hierarchy and political alliance. The most powerful alphas sat closest to the raised dais where Alpha Garrett would deliver the formal opening address. Lesser alphas occupied positions farther back. The arrangement was a visible representation of power, respect, and standing within the werewolf realm.

Hundreds of warriors filled the space. Dozens of alphas sat at the tables. The air crackled with political energy and barely concealed tension.

Lilith moved through the organized chaos with a tray of drinks, her movements practiced and efficient. She’d been trained for this role over the past two weeks, to serve at the Summit, to move invisibly through the space, to anticipate needs before they were voiced.

But she wasn’t invisible tonight.

The moment the Blackwood brothers had arrived, something in the hall’s energy had shifted. The other alphas’ conversations had paused. Warriors had straightened slightly. Even the air itself seemed to change when Nicholas, Sebastian, and Lucian took their seats at one of the prominent tables.

They commanded attention without doing anything to demand it.

Lilith had been serving drinks to a neutral section of the hall, carefully maintaining distance from them, when she felt it, that inexplicable awareness of their presence that had become constant over the past day.

She kept moving. Kept serving. Kept trying to ignore the sensation of being watched.

But as she approached a nearby table, a familiar voice called out:

"You."

Nicholas.

He was looking directly at her, his dark eyes carrying the weight of absolute authority. The gesture was subtle, just a slight inclination of his head, but the message was clear: come here.
