Myriad Rivers to the Sea

The arena floor was a massive expanse of polished grey stone that was reinforced with ancient defensive formations. Tiered seating rose on all four sides and accommodated the cultivators who had gathered for the martial tournament.

The sweeping curved roofs of the surrounding temples cast long shadows over the stone. The morning air was crisp and cool but the atmosphere was thick with tension and the heavy scent of incense.

Li Yu sat near the front of the Zhan Clan pavilion alongside Zhan Chen and Zhan Ling. The ten official Zhan Clan fighters sat in a neat row behind them. They were preparing their minds and steadying their breathing. The two Core Wardens stood silently among the five Zhan elders at the back of the pavilion.

A deep and resonant hum echoed across the plaza as a bronze bell was struck three times and the chaotic chatter of the crowd instantly died down.

An elderly monk stepped onto the center of the arena floor. He wore simple saffron robes and carried a wooden staff. Despite his frail appearance, his physical vitality radiated like a burning fire. This was Elder Kuang of the Vajra Peaks. He possessed an aura that commanded respect from every faction present.

"Welcome to the Vajra Peaks." Elder Kuang spoke. His voice was not loud but it carried perfectly to every corner of the massive stadium. "We gather here to honor the true vessel. The body is the foundation of all cultivation and the ultimate weapon of the Dao. Today, we temper our juniors so they may break their limits."

He swept his gaze across the different faction camps. He lingered on the grotesque members of the Chimera Sect for a fraction of a second before moving on.

"Peace is the most important thing in the Myriad Realms." The elder monk continued with a serene expression. "Therefore, we expect everyone to be merciful in their matches. You may call a stop to your fight at any time and the officials will intervene to protect you. However, we are cultivators and our path is inherently violent, that is a fact. If you step onto this stone floor, you must ready yourself. Deaths and severe injuries can occur. If you are not prepared to face your own mortality, do not step forward."

He struck his wooden staff against the stone and the sound rang out with finality.

"The matches will begin tomorrow." Elder Kuang announced with a warm smile. "For the rest of today, we invite all of our esteemed guests to partake in a grand vegetarian banquet. Eat, relax and forge new bonds. The path is long but we do not have to walk it as enemies."

The heavy tension in the arena broke as thousands of monks flooded into the plaza carrying wooden trays loaded with steamed buns, spiritual root vegetables, roasted nuts and glowing clear teas. They set up long tables across the arena floor and invited the factions to mingle.

Li Yu walked down to the arena floor with Zhan Chen and Zhan Ling. The vegetarian banquet was a stark contrast to the brutal fighting styles of the attendees but it still looked incredibly delicious. The major factions however, maintained a strict distance from one another.

The monks of the Vajra Peaks stayed near their temples and spoke in hushed tones. The cultivators of the Chimera Sect huddled in their own dark corner and glared at everyone with open hostility. They refused the vegetarian food entirely and many of them chewed on food they had brought themselves. The warriors of the Piercing Heavens Pavilion were quietly eating their food in their own section as well.

The minor factions were much more social and seemed to have interacted with one another much more often. The members of the Titan Body Sect, the Blood Forge Valley, the Coiled Viper Guild and the Crushing Wave Pavilion mingled freely among the crowds.

Zhan Chen was incredibly popular here. The moment the Zhan Clan heir stepped onto the arena floor, cultivators from almost every minor faction came over to pay their respects. They recognized his Sovereign cultivation level, which was the highest of any of the juniors here, and admired his straightforward nature.

He did not act like an arrogant noble or demand people bow to him. He smiled warmly and drank tea with the disciples while openly discussing cultivation theories with anyone who asked.

"He is a natural leader." Li Yu noted quietly as he watched Zhan Chen laugh at a joke told by a massive warrior.

"He understands that strength is useless without allies." Zhan Ling replied as she stood next to Li Yu while she took a delicate bite of a steamed bun. She had become quite friendly with him on their trip. "The Zhan Clan rules through simple bonds and camaraderie on the battlefield. Zhan Chen makes people want to follow him and fight with him. He is the perfect candidate for heir."

“I couldn’t agree more, he puts many others to shame.” Li Yu smiled and added.

A giant bronze skinned man walked over to their table. This was Tie Shan from the Titan Body Sect. He carried a massive jug of wine and offered a respectful nod to the Zhan heir.

"Zhan Chen." Tie Shan greeted with a booming voice. "It is good to see the Zhan Clan attending this time. We always appreciate testing our defenses against your physical power."

"The pleasure is ours, Brother Tie." Zhan Chen smiled. "Your defense is famous and powerful. I am eager to see how much progress your sect has made since the last gathering."

Several young warriors from the Piercing Heavens Pavilion also walked over to join the conversation. They wielded heavy glaives and possessed a disciplined military aura. Their leader offered Zhan Chen a deep bow.

"Zhan Chen." The young spearman greeted. "It is an honor to share the grounds with you. We hope your fighters will show us the true weight of the Zhan Clan’s momentum."

"The honor is mine." Zhan Chen replied with a bright smile. "Your pavilion spear arts are legendary. I am certain we will all learn something valuable this week."

Li Yu watched the interactions closely as he absorbed the personalities of the different groups. The Titan Body Sect members were loud and boisterous. They constantly slapped each other on the back and challenged one another to wrestling matches.

The Coiled Viper Guild members were terrifyingly quiet and moved with an unnatural fluidity. They seemed to slither through the crowd rather than walk. The Blood Forge Valley disciples smelled like copper and possessed a manic energy that made them twitch constantly. It was a fascinating gathering of warriors.

The banquet lasted until the sun dipped below the mountain peaks and the factions eventually retreated to their respective pavilions to rest. The peaceful atmosphere was pleasant but everyone knew the real purpose of the gathering would begin when the sun rose again.

The tournament structure was officially announced to the crowd but most already knew. There were exactly one hundred fighters participating in the event. They were divided into five separate brackets based on their cultivation levels. This ensured that the matches remained relatively fair and focused on skill rather than realm suppression.

The five brackets were Law Integration, Domain King, Paragon, Karma Severing and Tribulation.

There were twenty fighters in each bracket. The Zhan Clan had brought ten official fighters. This meant they had exactly two representatives were competing in each of the five divisions. Zhan Chen sat out entirely. As a Sovereign, he had no peers in what would be called the junior generation here.

The massive bronze bell rang out and the first matches of the Law Integration bracket began.

The arena floor was divided into four separate combat squares so multiple fights could happen at once. Li Yu sat in his seat and leaned forward to watch. He did not skip the lower level matches or ignore them because he was a Paragon. He watched every single match with intense focus. He wanted to understand the fundamental mechanics of how these factions fought to see what he could learn.

The first notable match was a Zhan Clan fighter against a disciple from the Crushing Wave Pavilion.

The Zhan Clan junior charged forward with explosive speed and threw a massive right hook. The Crushing Wave disciple did not dodge the blow, instead he simply shifted his stance and met the fist with his own heavy blue gauntlet. A loud crack echoed across the stadium. The Zhan junior stumbled backward with a pale face while he grabbed his chest and coughed up a mouthful of blood.

Li Yu narrowed his eyes as he analyzed the exchange. The armor of the Zhan fighter was completely intact. The Crushing Wave disciple had fused his Water Qi perfectly with the force of the punch.

The resulting shockwave had bypassed the armor entirely and rippled straight through the Zhan junior internal organs. It was a terrifying display of force manipulation. The Zhan fighter smartly raised his hand and yielded before he suffered permanent damage. It was an extremely quick exchange but one that involved different laws, techniques and principles.

The Crushing Wave pavilion members cheered loudly for their victory. The matches quickly escalated as the Domain King bracket took the stage.

A massive roar shook the arena as Tie Shan from the Titan Body Sect stepped onto the stone floor. His skin possessed a literal bronze sheen and he looked like a walking statue. His opponent was a lithe female fighter from the Coiled Viper Guild named She Qing.

The match was a brutal contrast in styles. Tie Shan simply stood in the center of the ring and crossed his arms. She Qing moved like a blur of green mist as she darted around him and struck his joints from impossible angles. She contorted her spine to avoid his slow and heavy grabs. Every time her hands slapped against his bronze skin, a hiss of corrosive poison Qi burned the air.

However, Tie Shan's external defense was simply too strong. The poison failed to penetrate his skin. She Qing eventually exhausted her Qi reserves while Tie Shan waited for the perfect moment and stepped forward with terrifying momentum. He slammed his massive shoulder into her chest and sent her flying across the arena. She crashed into the defensive boundary and slumped to the floor unconscious.

The crowd cheered loudly for the dominance of the Adamantine defense. The Coiled Viper Guild elders scowled but they accepted the defeat without causing a scene. Sect healers rushed onto the floor and carried the unconscious girl away.

The sun reached its peak in the sky when the Paragon bracket finally began. This was Li Yu's current cultivation level. He paid incredibly close attention to the speed and the power output of his direct peers.

A fighter from the Chimera Sect stepped into the ring and he was a horrific sight. His right arm had been entirely amputated and replaced with the massive spiked forearm of a demonic mantis. The dark chitin gleamed in the bright sunlight. His opponent was a bald monk from the Vajra Peaks.

The crowd grew incredibly tense. The rivalry between the two factions was famous and their ideologies were completely opposed. The Chimera fighter shrieked and lunged forward. He swung the massive mantis blade in a deadly arc that was aimed directly at the monk neck. The monk did not panic or draw a weapon. He simply closed his eyes and pushed his hands forward.

His physical vitality erupted and fused with his Qi. A brilliant golden manifestation of a massive palm materialized in the air around his physical hands. The golden palm slapped the mantis blade aside with a resounding clang of metal. The monk stepped into the opening and drove his fist directly into the Chimera fighter's stomach.

The physical force of the blow shattered the mutant ribs and folded his body in half. The monk caught the falling fighter and gently laid him on the ground to show mercy. This peaceful gesture only infuriated the Chimera Sect elders watching from the stands even further. They gnashed their teeth and yelled insults at the monk.

"Such a filthy corruption of the human form." A nearby elder muttered in disgust as he watched the mutant being dragged away. "The monks are too lenient. They should have purged him from the arena."

The Karma Severing bracket delivered explosive violence that shook the entire mountain range.

Xue Tu from the Blood Forge Valley walked onto the floor. He was a lean man and his opponent was a disciplined warrior from the Piercing Heavens Pavilion holding a heavy silver glaive.

The match started with a blur of silver light. The Piercing Heavens warrior spun his glaive and unleashed a terrifying wave of Qi that cut across the stone floor. Xue Tu dodged the wave of Qi but then headed directly towards the Piercing Heavens Pavilion’s disciple. The disciple swung his glaive once again at him.

The silver glaive pierced straight through Xue Tu's left shoulder and pinned his arm. The crowd gasped at the massive mistake. However, Xue Tu simply grabbed the shaft of the weapon and grinned with bloody teeth. The pain instantly triggered his berserker state. His skin turned bright red as his blood boiled and his internal meridians expanded violently.

Xue Tu then moved with impossible speed. He ripped himself off the blade and ignored the bleeding wound entirely. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second and slammed his forehead directly into the warrior's face.

The sickening crunch of breaking bones echoed through the stadium. The Piercing Heavens warrior fell backwards but was still able to swing his weapon some more. They battled on as Xue Tu continued to take damage but continued to get stronger. With another sickening blow to his face, the warrior collapsed. Xue Tu stood over him while his shoulder and other wounds actively steamed and began to close itself through regeneration.

"That is terrifying." Li Yu muttered to himself. He realized that fighting someone from the Blood Forge Valley required complete decapitation or total destruction. Standard wounds only made them faster and stronger.

The final matches of the day belonged to the Tribulation bracket. The power on display was breathtaking.

The main event was a fight between the lead Tribulation junior of the Zhan Clan and a powerful disciple from the Vajra Peaks. The stone floor of the arena shattered beneath their feet as they traded heavy blows. They did not use weapons and instead relied entirely on their fists, legs and body.

The Zhan Clan fighter gathered all of his power and pulled his fist back. He unleashed a punch that tore the air apart. His physical energy and his Qi fused perfectly to create a massive physical manifestation. A giant roaring lion head made of compressed Qi and blood vitality shot forward from his fist. The lion head roared loudly and carried the force that threatened to end life.

The Vajra Peaks monk planted his feet and thrust both palms forward to meet the attack. He manifested a massive golden bell that covered his entire body.

The lion head slammed into the golden bell and the resulting explosion generated a shockwave that rattled the defensive arrays around the stadium. The crowd roared in excitement as the dust finally settled.

The golden bell was covered in deep cracks but it held firm. The monk was bleeding from his nose but he remained standing. The Zhan Clan fighter was exhausted from the massive output and respectfully yielded the match. There was no reason to push forward in that kind of state and risk serious injuries.

The stadium erupted into cheers as the first day of the tournament officially concluded. The minor injuries were quickly treated by sect healers. The rivalries between the factions were heavily cemented but the rules of the tournament had been respected. No deaths had occurred on the arena floor.

Li Yu sat back in his chair and let out a long breath. He had gained an understanding of how truly expansive the path of the body could be. The Vajra Peaks was a great place to broaden his understanding on the paths of the body.
