Tielan watched the sky for a long moment before turning her attention back to the reality on the ground. She knew exactly what a newly conquered and completely devastated territory required to survive the coming weeks.

She pulled a glowing jade transmission slip from her spatial ring and infused it with her Qi.

"I will contact Patriarch Zhan Yue," Tielan announced to the group as her voice slipped effortlessly into its commanding tone. "The Gongsun Clan's infrastructure is shattered. They cannot secure their own borders right now, let alone govern their remaining vassal populations. I will have Zhan Yue dispatch a group of our logistical elders, along with a detachment of three thousand soldiers to help you stabilize these lands."

Ming, still reeling from the sudden weight of the leadership thrust upon him, offered a bow of gratitude. "Thank you, Commander Tielan. The presence of Zhan Clan enforcers will deter any factions from trying to take advantage of our current weakness."

Hua Eversong stepped forward with her elegant robes shifting in the gentle breeze. She placed a comforting hand on her husband's arm.

"The Eversong Clan will not stand idle either," Hua said warmly. "You are my husband, Ming. I will personally petition our Patriarch to send a host of our own administrators and array masters. The Zhan Clan can provide physical security as our people can help rebuild your defensive formations and manage the internal resource distribution."

Zhan Tian, who had been resting his massive heavy glaive against his shoulder in silence, suddenly spoke up.

"From this day forward, the tribute from the Gongsun Clan will be split exactly fifty-fifty. Half to the Zhan Clan, and half to the Eversong Clan."

Ming, Hua and even Tielan stared at the Worldkeeper in surprise. In the harsh reality of the cultivation cosmos, factions did not simply share tribute. The Zhan Clan was an empire of hammers; what they conquered, they kept.

Furthermore, the Eversong Clan had never possessed any formal alliance or shared territory with the Zhan Clan prior to this very moment. They were a respected faction but they were vastly weaker than the Zhan Clan.

Hua’s eyes widened slightly as the realization slowly dawned on her. She looked at Zhan Tian and then she looked over at Li Yu, who was quietly observing the exchange.

The Worldkeeper was not doing this out of random generosity. He was deliberately paving the way for their families once again. He was elevating the Eversong Clan’s status and wealth for his further granddaughter in law.

Zhan Tian was building a bridge of unquestionable support between the two, smoothing out any future political resistance should Li Yu and Lian choose to walk the Dao together. A warmth blossomed in Hua’s chest. The terrifying warlord who had just casually cleaved a massive spiritual battleship in half was actively looking out for her daughter’s future and doing so with meticulous and gentle care.

"We are deeply honored, Worldkeeper," Hua bowed, her voice thick with emotion. "The Eversong Clan will not forget this."

"There is nothing to remember." Zhan Tian grunted softly. He turned to his daughter and son-in-law. "Tielan, Canghai. Stay here and help Ming draft the initial edicts. Ensure the surviving elders understand exactly where they stand in the new hierarchy."

"We will handle it, Father," Tielan promised.

"Good." Zhan Tian turned to his grandson. "Brat. You are coming with me. We need to talk."

Before Li Yu could even nod, Zhan Tian reached out and grabbed the fabric of space itself. He didn't tear a rift to a different realm; he simply folded the immediate reality around them.

The ruined courtyard, the smell of blood and the figures of his parents vanished instantly. Li Yu found himself standing on a small, perfectly circular platform of white jade. The platform floated in an endless and tranquil void filled with slowly swirling currents of silver Qi. It was a temporary pocket dimension, forged entirely from Zhan Tian's mastery over spatial laws.

Zhan Tian stabbed his heavy glaive into the jade floor and sat down heavily on a simple wooden bench. The terrifying aura of the warlord receded, leaving behind a weary and ancient man.

"Sit," Zhan Tian commanded gently.

Li Yu walked over and sat on the bench beside his grandfather, not sure what his grandfather wanted to talk to him about. The silence of the pocket dimension was absolute and incredibly calming. Zhan Tian stared out into the silver void for a long time before finally speaking.

"Tell me the truth, Yu'er," Zhan Tian said with his quiet voice. "Do you think what I did today was too much? When I executed the Patriarch and cut down that ship... do you look at me and see a tyrant?"

Li Yu looked at the scarred profile of his grandfather. He could hear the genuine weight behind the question. The Worldkeeper carried the lives of trillions on his shoulders and the burden of those choices clearly lingered.

"I don't know enough about ruling an empire or commanding a faction to say if what you did was too much or not," Li Yu answered honestly, his tone respectful and steady. "I have never had to manage vassal clans or weigh the lives of thousands against what has to be done. But I do know that you are incredibly wise, Grandfather. I trust that you understand what is best for the survival of our family."

Zhan Tian turned his head and a slow laugh rumbling deep in his broad chest. The tension in his massive shoulders visibly relaxed.

"A very good answer," Zhan Tian smiled while reaching over to playfully cuff Li Yu on the back of the head. "And there is absolutely nothing wrong with admitting that you do not know. That is the first lesson of leadership, brat. You do not need to possess the answers to every single problem in the cosmos. That is exactly what advisors and tacticians are there for."

Zhan Tian leaned forward while resting his elbows on his armored knees.

"The key to authority is not absolute knowledge," Zhan Tian instructed while his eyes turned serious. "The key is having good people around you. People you can trust with your life and people who will tell you the truth even when you are blind to it. If you surround yourself with sycophants, your empire will crumble from the inside out."

Li Yu nodded slowly and was absorbing the wisdom.

"Speaking of good people," Zhan Tian shifted the topic, a knowing glint appearing in his sharp eyes. "That little Eversong girl. Lian. Her mother is a sharp woman and her father has a good heart. She comes from a solid foundation."

Li Yu felt a slight heat rise in his cheeks, realizing exactly where this conversation was heading.

"I am not telling you to marry her tomorrow. Your path is your own but hear me clearly on this: make sure that even if you do not want to be with her in the end, you do not mistreat her. She has done more than you know. That kind of loyalty is rarer than any supreme treasure."

"I would never mistreat her, Grandfather," Li Yu promised sincerely even though he wasn’t quite sure what his grandfather meant by what she had done for him. "Lian is an important person in my life. Even if she finds someone vastly better than me and her path takes her somewhere else entirely, I only want her to be happy."

Zhan Tian stared at his grandson for a long moment, completely taken aback by the purity of the statement. Then, he threw his head back and laughed loudly, the sound echoing through the silver void.

"By the Heavens," Zhan Tian chuckled while shaking his head in amusement. "It is incredibly rare for someone with the Zhan bloodline to be so genuinely kind hearted. We are a lineage of brutes, boy. We usually just smash what we want and dare the cosmos to take it back."

"I think you are selling yourself short," Li Yu countered with a subtle smile as he was leaning back on the bench. "I may not know politics but I have eyes. I think my grandfather is very kind hearted as well."

Zhan Tian raised a scarred eyebrow. "Oh? I just severed a man's head and blew a kingdom's flagship out of the sky. Where exactly is the kindness in that?"

"I picked up on the subtleties," Li Yu explained calmly. "You could have easily wiped the Gongsun Clan from the face of the cosmos. Instead, you gave them an out. You installed Ming because you knew he would treat them fairly and you split the tribute. You acted like a ruthless tyrant to scare off the vultures but your actions actually saved the clan from total annihilation. You showed mercy, even if you disguised it with a blade."

Zhan Tian paused and he looked at his grandson, a sense of pride swelling in his chest. The boy was not just physically monstrous; his mind was sharp, at times anyways, he’s seen the boy be as dense as a rock as well.

"Keep those observations to yourself, brat," Zhan Tian grumbled playfully, though a warm smile remained on his face. "If the rest of the cosmos finds out I have gone soft, I will have to start cracking skulls just to maintain my terrifying reputation."

Zhan Tian stood up and pulled his glaive from the jade floor.

"Come on," Zhan Tian said as the space around them was already beginning to warp. "Let us return to the courtyard. Your mother will start worrying if I keep you away for too long."

Far across the shifting spatial currents of the cosmos, the heavily damaged flagship of the Aurelian Spear Kingdom finally breached the defensive arrays of its home realm. The golden spires of the capital city pierced the clouds, radiating an overwhelming aura of spear intent that naturally suppressed the surrounding Qi. But there was no triumphant return for Crown Prince Shen.

Shen stood in the center of the command deck with his golden robes immaculate but his expression dark as a thundercloud. He stared at the jagged, blackened edge of his flagship where a full third of the vessel had simply been sheared out of existence. The arrays were sputtering and were whining in agony.

He was absolutely furious.

He had mobilized a fleet and promised protection in exchange for a talented, beautiful concubine. Instead, he had walked directly into the wrath of a warlord, nearly lost his life and had his symbol of power permanently crippled. All because the woman he had bargained for couldn't control her own suicidal arrogance.

'She was absolutely not worth this,' Shen thought bitterly again as his fists clenched at his sides. 'How foolish I was to think I could simply sweep in and claim the spoils from the Zhan Clan without consequence.'

When the ship finally docked at the royal pavilion, Shen did not hesitate. He bypassed his personal quarters and marched directly into the central throne room of the imperial palace.

The chamber was lined with ancient spears that hummed with the blood of vanquished enemies. Sitting upon the high throne was Emperor Jinhai. The ruler of the kingdom possessed a suffocating presence and his aura sharp enough to cut the air itself.

Standing to the right of the throne was a truly ancient figure. He leaned heavily on a plain wooden spear and his face a map of horrific scars earned in the darkest corners of the cosmos. This was Ancestor Longwei, the legendary veteran who had served as a general under Zhan Tian.

Shen dropped to one knee in the center of the hall and was bowing his head in shame.

"Speak," Emperor Jinhai commanded, his voice echoing like clashing steel.

Shen did not hide a single detail. He explained the bargain with Gongsun Yue, the arrival at the ruined territories, the confrontation with Zhan Tian and Yue's hysterical insults that ultimately led to the destruction of the flagship. He laid his own foolishness bare before his father and his ancestor because they would know anyway.

Silence hung heavily in the throne room when he finished. Shen braced himself for a severe reprimand. Instead, a sudden, booming laugh erupted from the right side of the throne.

Ancestor Longwei slapped his wooden spear against the marble floor as his scarred face twisted into a massive grin.

"Ah, the Worldkeeper!" Longwei laughed loudly, the sound filled with nostalgic reverence. "That is actually very unlike the Zhan Tian I followed into the abyss! If an enemy had cursed his bloodline back in the dark zone, he wouldn't have just sliced a ship in half. He would have erased the entire armada from existence and reduced the surrounding areas to ashes!"

Longwei looked down at Shen with his ancient eyes twinkling.

"You do not understand how lucky you are, boy," Longwei said while shaking his head. "By only destroying a third of your ship and leaving you with your life, Zhan Tian gave me a monumental amount of face. He stayed his hand purely out of respect for the blood I bled under his banner. It brings a smile to my old face to know the warlord values his veterans so."

Emperor Jinhai nodded slowly and was processing the political reality of the situation. He looked down at his son.

"The Ancestor is right," Jinhai stated pragmatically. "You survived a storm that should have killed you. But we must cut the rot away before it infects our own roots."

Jinhai leaned forward on his throne.

"Gongsun Yue and her remaining retainers are a liability," the Emperor decreed coldly. "There is no need for someone like that in my kingdom now. Not only has she proven herself to be arrogant and foolish but she will undoubtedly be unhappy with you for failing to kill her enemy. Worse, she will forever harbor a deep, venomous resentment towards the Zhan Clan. If we harbor her, that resentment becomes our problem."

Shen looked up and nodded firmly. "I agree completely, Father. Bringing her aboard was one massive mistake on my part. I let my ambition blind my judgment."

"It is okay," Jinhai said as his sharp aura softened into a rare, fatherly warmth. "You are young and ambition is the lifeblood of a Crown Prince. Consider this a painful but necessary learning opportunity. Stop falling so easily for beautiful faces that carry hidden knives."

Jinhai stood up as his golden robes were shimmering in the hall's light.

"Furthermore," the Emperor instructed. "I want you to pay close attention to the shifting currents. The Worldkeeper's grandson has been revealed to the cosmos. I want you to find a way to befriend Li Yu if the opportunity ever presents itself. Be his ally, be his drinking companion, be his rival in the Dao if you must. But under no circumstances are you ever to become his enemy."

"I understand, Father," Shen bowed deeply.

Jinhai waved his hand dismissively. "Go. Handle the execution yourself. Make it clean." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Shen rose to his feet and marched out of the throne room. He descended into the lower holding cells of the palace where Gongsun Yue, Scholar Mo, and Auntie Lan were chained to the cold stone walls.

Yue looked up as the Crown Prince entered. She was pale, missing an arm and her cultivation was sealed but a desperate spark of hope still flickered in her eyes. She thought he had come to heal her.

Shen did not speak and he did not offer any final words of comfort or explanation. He simply drew a golden spear from his spatial ring and channeled his Qi. In three swift and merciless thrusts, the golden spear pierced their hearts and shattered their spiritual foundations.

Gongsun Yue slumped against the chains, her eyes wide as the final spark of life faded from her body. The ambitious rebellion that had sought to break an ancient oath ended not with a glorious battle for freedom but in a damp, silent cell, executed as a mere political inconvenience.
