"The elder is technically right about the output but he assumes a controlled environment or to maximize your output for a single attack to break out of somewhere for example. I prefer to keep my rivers of Qi circulating constantly through my meridians. It provides a better defense against unexpected attacks and allows for smoother transitions between techniques."

Thale stroked his thick beard and joined the conversation. "We rely on the earth to manage our flow. We draw the natural Qi up through our bodies and let it cycle through our bark armor. Holding it in the chest creates a rigid center. A rigid center snaps under heavy pressure."

"Do you ever struggle to draw that nature Qi when fighting in barren areas?" Li Yu asked with genuine curiosity. "If you fight in a desert or a dead zone, your connection to the earth must be weakened."

"It is much harder," Thale admitted with a heavy sigh. "We carry seeds infused with our own life force to compensate. We scatter them on the ground before a fight to create a temporary domain of nature Qi. It is not ideal but survival requires preparation as well. Some of the most powerful techniques need to be set up, after all."

Monk Jin opened his eyes and chimed the small brass bell resting in his palm. The clear sound washed over the table and brought a sense of calm to the group. "The environment should not dictate the state of your spirit. The sound of the bell originates from within the metal but the resonance is carried by the intent of the ringer. If your intent is pure, the environment becomes secondary."

"That sounds beautiful Monk Jin," Ren chuckled while raising his cup. "But a pure intent will not stop a blade from piercing your neck if your Qi reserves are empty."

The table erupted into lighthearted laughter as they continued to debate the practical applications of the morning lecture. While there was no real wrong or right, the situation usually dictated what must be done. Li Yu enjoyed the exchange of ideas immensely. He did not agree with everything they said but hearing their perspectives broadened his own understanding of the Dao.

Li Hua walked over a moment later and held a beautifully carved wooden box. "The White Jade Clan sent over these sample pills as a token of goodwill. They wish to discuss a potential alliance during the evening forums tonight."

"Set up a meeting for the third hour," Li Mei instructed her sister. "Ensure the seating arrangement places them facing the light. I want to see their expressions clearly when we discuss the tribute percentages."

"I will take care of it," Li Hua nodded before hesitating. "Sister, you seem even more tense today. The convention is going very well. There have been no fights and the elders are pleased with your efforts."

"I am tense because we have a viper sitting in our garden," Li Mei said coldly. She pointed a slender finger toward Li Yu. "Look at him. He is holding court with the dregs of the Myriad Realms. He laughs with the Freeblade thugs and shares tea with peasants."

Li Jian frowned and looked across the plaza. "He is just talking to them, sister. He has not approached a single elder or anyone of true influence from a powerful faction, outside of Ren who he was already familiar with, since the convention began. He is not trying to steal your political allies."

"That is exactly the point," Li Mei hissed as the regal mask she wore for the public slipped further away but not explaining much further.

"I truly believe you are overthinking this," Li Jian sighed in frustration. "He told everyone he does not want the position. Our parents confirmed it."

Li Mei turned and glared at her brother with a look of bitter anger. "You are too trusting Jian. Power is never given away willingly. He is waiting for the right moment to strike and he is using this convention to gather his army. I will not let him blindside me."

She gathered her flowing robes and marched away toward the administrative pavilions. She planned to review the patrol schedules and ensure the enforcement elders were watching the Freeblade Alliance closely. Her paranoia had taken deep root and she began to view every laugh and every shared cup of tea as a direct threat to her future if it involved Li Yu.

The fifth day of the convention arrived with a strange shift in the ambient energy of the estate. The morning lectures proceeded as scheduled but a pervasive whisper rippled through the audience. Cultivators exchanged excited glances and passed secret notes among their delegations while the speakers tried to maintain order on the stage. Suo nearly dropped his plate of food as his eyes widened. "Are you certain? Which trial ground?"

"The Sunfire Sovereign legacy," Ren announced to the table. "The spatial seals are thinning and the ambient heat in the region is skyrocketing. It is definitely his realm."

Li Yu furrowed his brow. He had spent most of his life in the lower realms and lacked the deep historical knowledge of the upper echelons. And while he had read up on many things since he returned, it of course wouldn’t cover everything. He had no idea what Ren was talking about. Li Yu looked at the excited faces around the table and asked for context. "Who is the Sunfire Sovereign and why does his legacy matter so much?"

A scholar from the White Jade Clan who was sitting at the adjacent table leaned across the divide. His eyes shined with academic excitement. "He was a legend from over five thousand years ago. His true name was Yan Shen. He possessed no formal backing and no elite bloodline but he manifested a mutated fire Qi that burned hotter than anything the realms had ever seen. His flames did not just burn flesh. They consumed spiritual energy itself."

"He was a terror in combat," Ren added with deep respect. "He did not build an empire or settle down to start a clan. He just traveled the cosmos and challenged every expert he could find. He burned brightly but his time was short. He dominated the realms for barely a century before he mysteriously vanished. Some say his own flames consumed him, while others claim he retreated due to a defeat and some say he simply got bored of winning."

"Regardless of how he died or disappeared, his legacy is a treasure trove," the scholar continued rapidly. "The last time this spatial realm appeared was five millennia ago. It is heavily geared toward those who practice fire techniques. The sovereign left behind his insights and his personal armory."

Li Yu thought about the implications and looked toward the Blazing Edge Empire delegation across the plaza. Crown Princess Yan Fei was speaking rapidly to her elders and the fire aspected, cultivators were practically vibrating with anticipation.

"If it is geared toward fire cultivators, why is everyone else so excited?" Li Yu asked. "Most of the people here do not use fire arts."

"Because you do not need to obtain the final legacy to reap the rewards," Ren explained while pouring another round of wine. "The trial grounds are filled with secondary tests. The Sovereign designed the realm to temper warriors of all paths. Even if you fail the main inheritance, there are side paths filled with high grade spirit stones, rare weapons and unique resources. There are fire seeds that can refine the physical body and flame herbs that can cleanse the soul of impurities."

"Those resources fetch a high price on the open market," Suo pointed out while gripping his sword. "A rogue cultivator could live comfortably for decades just by bringing back a handful of flame herbs. It is too bad that I will not be fated with such fortune, I have no way to get there and even if I did, I’d most likely just be robbed."

“Nonsense, Suo. You can come with us! If you happen to get anything, we’ll make sure you get to keep it.” Ren said while slapping him on the back.

"When does it open?" Li Yu asked as he realized the potential value of the trial ground. He needed resources to strengthen his body and soul if he ever wanted to lift the dark staff waiting for him at the lakes.

"That is the best part," Ren said with a relaxed sigh. "The spatial seals are decaying slowly. The experts investigating the perimeter estimate it will take at least one to two months before the entrance fully stabilizes. No one can force their way inside before then without being torn apart by the spatial turbulence."

"So there is no rush," Li Yu concluded.

"Exactly," the scholar agreed. "It gives everyone ample time to prepare their expeditions and gather their allies. It also means we do not have to abandon this convention early. We can finish sharing our knowledge here and then head there when the time is right."

The revelation of the Sunfire Sovereign legacy dominated every conversation for the rest of the fifth day. During the afternoon demonstrations, the spectators paid very little attention to the martial artists on stage. The crowds gathered in small circles to debate strategies and form temporary alliances for the upcoming exploration.

However, the resources within that realm are too valuable to ignore. If we secure a large portion of the secondary treasures, we can trade them to the fire sects."

"Will you lead the expedition, sister?" Li Hua asked quietly from the corner of the room.

"Of course I will," Li Mei stated with unyielding authority. "This is the perfect opportunity to solidify my standing among the elders. I will lead our finest disciples into the realm and return with a bounty that will silence any remaining doubters."

She paused and her eyes narrowed as a dark thought crossed her mind. The crack in her regal facade deepened as she envisioned her cousin stealing her glory. "Li Yu will undoubtedly go. He spends all his time with those mercenaries and they will certainly convince him to join for the loot."

"Why does it matter if he goes?" Li Jian sighed in exasperation. "Let him hunt for anything he needs, his strength is the clan’s strength. It does not affect your mission to gather resources for the clan."

"It affects everything," Li Mei snapped as her voice rose in anger. "If he returns with better treasures than the official delegation, it will humiliate me. The elders will view it as proof that his unorthodox methods are superior to my leadership. He will use the wealth from the trial ground to buy the loyalty of others. I cannot allow him to overshadow me in a public trial."

Li Jian fell silent and looked at the floor. He realized his sister was trapped in a cycle of her own making. Her obsession with Li Yu was causing her to view every event as a personal attack on her position. She no longer interacted with the other factions to build peace. She only interacted with them to ensure she looked better than her cousin.

The sixth day of the convention dawned with a restless energy that permeated the entire estate. The morning lectures focused on the structural integrity of defensive barriers but the audience were still clearly distracted. There was no helping it, when it came to free loot, cultivators were all one and the same.

He had broadened his understanding of the cosmos and learned to appreciate the diverse paths others walked. He looked up at the moon hanging over the Li Clan estate and smiled.
