Lira looked at him.
Then she looked at the imaginary note in her head.
"Ah, yes." A pause. "How clumsy of me."
She said it with the tone of someone admitting they left the key in the door — not embarrassment.
Kai looked at her.
"It happens," Lira said, in the same tone.
Serah had stopped fighting.
Not because the S-rank vampires had stopped — but because she had sensed something the moment Lira emerged from the darkness.
Recognition.
She turned.
Lira looked at her at the same time.
The silence between the two lasted three full seconds.
---
"Serah," Lira said.
"Lira."
"You’re still alive."
"So are you."
Lira tilted her head slightly.
"It’s been a while," she said.
"Long enough."
---
[GarcíaFTW: THEY KNOW EACH OTHER]
[NocheEterna99: THAT EXCHANGE ISN’T BETWEEN STRANGERS]
[StreamerHunter: "you’re still alive" / "so are you" — there’s HISTORY there]
[xSorinx: Kai noticed. He’s got that face like he’s filing information fast.]
[Pedro_Sierra: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ancient history ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)]
[Deral_Bleattler: how many centuries has it been since they saw each other??]
---
Kai looked at Serah.
Serah didn’t look at him.
She kept looking at Lira — not jealousy, not tactical evaluation, not the warm glow of the last few nights.
Serah didn’t answer. Her markings pulsed once and went still.
"Do you know each other?" Kai said.
Neither of them answered immediately.
Lira spoke first.
"When S-rank wolves learned to take human form," she said, "some dared to claim territory that wasn’t theirs." She looked at Serah. "The first to achieve it chose territory that had been ours."
"Vampire territory," Kai said.
"Vampire territory." Lira kept looking at Serah. "She was among the first."
Serah didn’t deny anything.
"There was a war," Lira continued. "Long. Costly for both sides. In the end we reached an agreement before wiping each other out." A pause. "But before the agreement, for years, we would meet."
"Where?" Kai said.
"Neutral territory." Lira looked at her own hands — the black gloves, perfectly intact despite everything that had happened in the chamber. "To face each other. Without witnesses. Without political consequences." She turned back to Serah.
"I respected your strength."
"And I yours," Serah said.
"Until you stopped showing up."
Serah didn’t answer.
---
[NocheEterna99: CENTURIES OF HISTORY. FIGHTS IN NEUTRAL TERRITORY. MUTUAL RESPECT.]
[GarcíaFTW: "until you stopped showing up" — Lira hasn’t seen Serah in a long time]
[StreamerHunter: Kai is processing all this with a face like "this only happens in movies"]
[xSorinx: Serah didn’t answer the "stopped showing up" part. There’s something there.]
[Pedro_Sierra: (;′⌒) tragic history between vampire and wolf (;′⌒)]
[Deral_Bleattler: wait wait. Lira said she respected her strength. That’s huge coming from her.]
---
Kai looked at Serah.
"Why did you stop showing up?"
Serah looked at him for a second.
"Because I was banished."
The silence that followed had a different weight than the previous one.
Kai looked at her.
Banished.
I didn’t know that.
From the wolf kingdom?
Lira spoke before he could ask.
"The great Serah," she said, with a tone that was aristocratic and sharp in equal measure, "banished from the kingdom of wet dogs." A pause. "If you were as incredible as you think you are, they wouldn’t have cast you out."
Serah’s silver markings accelerated.
Kai saw it.
But Serah spoke before he could say anything.
"I don’t care," she said. Without drama. Without the heat of defense.
"It’s in the past."
Lira looked at her.
"And what do you have now instead?"
"My Alpha." The markings pulsed once, warm. "To start a family with."
Lira looked at her for a second.
Then looked at Kai.
Then back at Serah.
And smiled — not the noble smile, the other one. The small, genuine one.
It vanished in less than a second and was replaced by something more mocking.
"Aww," Lira said. "How sweet."
---
[GarcíaFTW: "AWW HOW SWEET" FROM LIRA IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING SHE’S SAID]
[NocheEterna99: I saw that smile. I SAW IT BEFORE SHE TOOK IT OFF.]
[StreamerHunter: Lira genuinely smiled for half a second and covered it immediately]
[xSorinx: Kai saw it too. I saw it on his face.]
[Pedro_Sierra: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Lira has feelings ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) she’d deny it in any court ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)]
---
"Made for each other," Lira continued. "A human piece of trash for a wet dog."
Serah’s markings stopped pulsing warmly.
Kai looked at her.
Serah was looking at Lira with the most disgusted expression, as if she’d just heard something insulting directed at someone important to her.
The insult toward herself she had processed without flinching.
The insult toward Kai was different.
"You can insult me," Serah said, her voice dropping half a tone, "all you want."
Lira looked at her.
"But not him."
---
The two looked at each other.
Three seconds.
And they lunged.
---
Serah was first — her primordial aura expanded, her partially transformed form, speed that made the exchanges with the S-rank vampires seem slow.
Lira went at the same time — not dodging, receiving — and the impact of the primordial aura against something Kai hadn’t yet seen in Lira was like two atmospheric fronts colliding in an enclosed space.
The catacomb floor fractured beneath their feet.
The ceiling shook.
One of the A-rank vampires on the perimeter involuntarily stepped back three paces from the pressure of the exchange.
Kai watched them.
For the first time since arriving in Aethon, he saw Serah fight without restraint.
Without the careful control of the training sessions.
Without the calculation of previous combats. With years of primordial instinct unleashed in every movement, every martial technique she had learned integrated into instinct until it became indistinguishable from it.
It was completely different.
It was extraordinary.
And Lira matched her.
---
[GarcíaFTW: THEY LUNGED AT THE SAME TIME]
[NocheEterna99: THE FLOOR FRACTURED. THE CEILING SHOOK.]
[StreamerHunter: Kai is watching Serah fight with EVERYTHING for the first time]
[xSorinx: an A-rank vampire stepped back from the ambient pressure. AN A-RANK. FROM AMBIENT PRESSURE.]
[Pedro_Sierra: ε=ε=ε=ε=ε=ε=┌(; ̄◇ ̄)┘ SSS vs SS with centuries of history ε=ε=ε=ε=ε=ε=┌(; ̄◇ ̄)┘]
[Deral_Bleattler: Lira is matching her. AN SS MATCHING AN SSS.]
*[User_7741: (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ FIGHT OF THE CENTURY ✧゚・: ヽ(◕ヮ◕ヽ)]
---
Kai let them fight.
Not because he didn’t want to intervene — but because something in the combat dynamic told him intervening would be the wrong mistake at the wrong time.
This was between them.
It had been for centuries.
He turned.
At the back of the chamber, separated from the combat area by a short hallway no vampire had blocked because everyone was watching Serah and Lira, there was a gate.
Large.
Black iron.
With the kind of thickness that suggested it wasn’t designed to stop normal humans but to stop things stronger than that.
And behind the gate, in the darkness, Kai could see silhouettes.
The townspeople.
Alive. Standing. Scared but alive.
Kai started walking toward the gate.
---
Lira’s right hand was exactly where Kai expected her to be.
Between him and the gate.
Standing.
Eyes the dark red of the S-ranks looking at Kai with something that wasn’t hostility.
It was hunger.
Professional.
Controlled.
But present.
"My mistress is SS," she said, with the voice of someone who has rehearsed this conversation. "But I am an S of a higher rank." The rank markings on her uniform glowed faintly. "I’m not as weak as the vampires you faced before."
Kai looked at her.
"And I’m not going to break my mission." A pause. She licked the edge of a fang lightly. "To protect the prisoners until my mistress decides what to do with them."
Behind the gate, someone from the village recognized Kai.
"It’s the hunter from the dungeon!" a voice said.
"The F-Rank one!"
"Get us out of here!"
Kai looked at Lira’s right hand.
Then at the gate.
Then back at her.
"What’s your name?" he said.
The right hand blinked.
"Why?"
"Because I’m going to have to go through you," Kai said, "and I’d rather know the name of who I’m fighting."
---
[GarcíaFTW: "I’D RATHER KNOW THE NAME OF WHO I’M FIGHTING"]
[NocheEterna99: KAI BEING KAI]
[StreamerHunter: viewers: 1,800,000. The townspeople recognized him from the stream.]
[xSorinx: the right hand blinked. FIRST INVOLUNTARY EXPRESSION.]
[Pedro_Sierra: ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ TWO SIMULTANEOUS FIGHTS ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ]
[Deral_Bleattler: Serah vs Lira in the background. Kai vs right hand up front.]
