The room was very quiet.

Outside, the street did its ordinary nighttime things.

Ellie Harper looked at him with twelve years of a question in her eyes, and the lamp was warm, and Stanley Ford was somewhere across the city in an urban planning review session, and she had a wine glass she was no longer holding.

"Yes," she said.

Mike looked at her for a long moment. Then he lowered his hand from her chin and leaned back.

She blinked.

"It would have been good," he said, quietly. "The way things are good when two people are actually paying attention to each other and neither of them has learned yet to be careful."

"I know it’s not nothing," she said.

"Good," Mike said.

She exhaled. Something in the room shifted, not all the way back to where it had been, but slightly. "Hmph."

"You’re doing the thing again," she said.

"What thing?"

"Where you know exactly what to say," she said. "And exactly when to say it and when not to."

"Maybe," Mike said.

"Not maybe," she said. "Definitely." She picked up the wine glass again. "You came over here and sat on my kitchen counter and told me the story about the street, and you looked at me like that, and then you—"

She gestured at him. "Said the responsible version."

"You’re in a relationship," Mike said.

"I know I’m in a relationship," she said. "I know."

"So do I," Mike said.

She looked at him. "That’s not a rule for you," she said. "Is it. Other people being in relationships."

Mike didn’t answer that.

"I’m not judging it," she said. "I’m just noting it."

"You’re allowed to note it," Mike said.

She turned the glass in her hands again. "Why didn’t you just—" She stopped.

"Why didn’t I just what?" Mike said.

She met his eyes. "You know."

"Say it," Mike said.

She held his gaze. "Because you would have," she said. "And it would have been—"

She stopped. "And I don’t know if I would have stopped it."

"I know," Mike said.

She looked at him for a long moment. "And that’s why you didn’t."

"One of the reasons," Mike said.

"What are the others?"

"You’ll figure them out," Mike said. "You always do."

The clock on the wall said eight-forty.

"You should go," Ellie said. It wasn’t said with hostility or relief—it was just a statement she was testing for its validity.

Mike didn’t move.

She looked at him. "Stanley will be home in—"

"Twenty minutes," Mike said. "Maybe thirty."

"Right," she said. "So."

Neither of them moved.

She looked at the wineglass in her hands and then set it on the table with the careful deliberateness of someone who needed to do something with their hands and that was the available option.

"You said the responsible version earlier," she said.

"I did," Mike said.

"And now you’re not leaving," she said.

"You haven’t asked me to," Mike said. "You said I should go, and that’s different."

She looked at him. "You’re drawing a very specific line."

"You draw them that way or they don’t mean anything," Mike said.

She was quiet for a moment. "What happens if I ask you to go?"

"Then I go," Mike said. "Immediately. No argument."

"And if I don’t ask?" she said.

He held her gaze. "Then we’re in the conversation we’ve been in since the steps outside the arts building."

She turned that over. "That’s what this has been," she said. "One long conversation."

"Most things are," Mike said. "If you’re paying attention."

She looked at the table between them. The dinner plates were still there, and the lamp was still warm.

Outside, the street was doing exactly what streets do at eight-forty on a Thursday, which was nothing in particular.

"Tell me something true," Ellie said.

"About what?" Mike said.

She was still. "I was thinking about my grandmother," she said quietly. "She’d died the month before."

"I know," Mike said. "I didn’t know that’s what it was, but I knew it was real."

She looked at him. "You were twelve."

"I was paying attention," Mike said.

"You’ve been paying attention to me for fifteen years," she said, and her tone conveyed a meaning that was neither an accusation nor something else entirely.

"On and off," Mike said. "There were twelve years in the middle."

"But you remembered," she said.

"I remember everything," Mike said. "I told you that."

She pushed her chair back from the table and stood up, which was a movement that could have meant several things, such as frustration, a desire to leave the conversation, or simply the end of dinner. Mike stayed at the table and watched her.

She turned around and leaned against the counter with her arms folded, looking at him across the kitchen. "And then you showed up in the canteen on Tuesday and sat down and ate your lamb and let Haruka tell you that you were structurally efficient, and I thought—"

She stopped.

"What did you think?" Mike said.

"That I’d been using a different word," she said. "I was referring to something that wasn’t exactly right."

Mike got up from the table.

He crossed the kitchen in his usual unhurried manner and stopped in front of her, positioned so closely that she would have to move to create distance, but she remained still.

"Ellie," he said.

"Stop it. Don’t try to be a smartass about this," she said.

"I wasn’t going to," Mike said.

She looked up at him. "What were you going to say?"

"Nothing," Mike said.

He reached up and tucked the strand of hair back from her face, the same gesture he used when he meant something and wasn’t going to put it into more words than that. Her eyes followed his hand and then came back to his face.

"That’s... not fair," she said.

"No," he agreed.

"You’ve been doing things like that all evening," she said. "The way you touch your chin, the way you tuck your hair behind my ear, and the way you look at people as if they’re the only ones that matter."

"Well, ain’t that right, though?" Mike said. "You are the only thing in the room."

She exhaled. "See," she said. "That again."

"Is it working?" Mike said.

She stared at him. Then, despite everything, she laughed with a genuine and slightly helpless laugh, the laugh of someone who had lost an argument they were trying to have with themselves.

"Yes," she said. "Obviously yes. That’s the problem."

"You keep calling it a problem," Mike said.

"It is a problem," she said. "Stanley is—"

"Not here," Mike said quietly, his tone not unkind.

"No," she said. "He’s not."

She gazed at him for an extended moment. The kitchen felt warm and inviting.

Outside, the city continued its routine, indifferent to their conversation.

"You never actually told me," she said. "What that version would have felt like."

"No," Mike said. "I didn’t."

"You said it would have been good," she said. "The kind that stays."

"Yes," Mike said.

"No," he agreed. "It’s not."

She held his gaze. "So tell me."

"I’d rather show you right now," Mike said.
