- Chapter 1: On the Matter of Attributes
He opened his eyes.
He was no longer staring at the crude roof of a tent, but a comforting wooden ceiling.
He had slept very comfortably.
Judging by the sunlight outside the window, it had to be almost noon.
Zelir lay in bed for a while, spacing out, before slowly sitting up.
A relaxing, dreamless sleep had greatly restored his physical condition.
With a flicker in his gaze, the panel appeared. The data had changed slightly.
The analysis progress for Embrace of the Mist Veil had reached 4%.
’So I can increase the progress by 4% a day... That means it’ll take over twenty days to finish the analysis. What a grind.’ 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
’Technique Celestial Calculation really does need time to develop. If I had chosen Magical Surge, I could have boosted my immediate combat power.’
His gaze shifted downward. The mysterious Great Creation Skill was still at 0%.
Zelir flopped back onto the bed and began to think about what he should do today.
’Should I go to the Adventurer’s Association to accept a quest... I don’t feel any rush. I still have enough money to live on for a while.’
Besides, his original body’s first adventure had been far too reckless. He had only brought a dagger for a weapon, and his armor was practically nonexistent.
He was lucky the quest target was just a wild wolf and that Marcus Gray had been there to hold off the Fog Demon. Otherwise, things would have most likely gone wrong.
He absolutely had to be fully prepared for his next adventure.
There was also the matter of his Mage rating to sort out.
Zelir was eager to explore this world’s Magic System.
In his original body’s memories, there was a Mage’s Guild in Black Stone Town, but he had never gone near it due to his timidity and low self-esteem.
Since he had chosen the path of a Mage, he would definitely have to deal with this organization in the future.
He might even get to witness some Mages casting High Level Magic, which would allow his Technique Celestial Calculation to come into play.
"Alright then... I’ll head over to the Mage’s Guild today and get myself rated while I’m at it," Zelir muttered as he got out of bed.
After a quick wash, Zelir enjoyed a meal of minced salted pork with roasted potatoes before leaving the inn.
However, his first stop wasn’t the Mage’s Guild, but a clothing store.
The clothes Zelir was currently wearing were rather shabby. While he didn’t quite look like a vagrant, he wasn’t much better off.
His coarse cloth clothes, stained with wolf’s blood and mud, made him look both wild and slovenly.
It didn’t matter at the Adventurer’s Association, where everyone looked like that, but the Mage’s Guild would clearly not accept such an appearance.
Those master Mages might just throw him out like a beggar.
Standing in front of the mirror, Zelir admired his new image.
He had chosen a gray, long-sleeved, belted tunic, paired with black linen trousers and mid-calf soft leather boots.
Although it was a fairly common outfit, Zelir’s high Charm stat of 46 was clearly having an effect.
The years of farm labor hadn’t tanned or roughened Zelir’s face; his skin was still fair.
His low body fat percentage gave him a sharp jawline and defined facial features. His black hair, black eyes, and soft features combined to give Zelir the overall handsome look of a pretty boy.
The man in the mirror didn’t look like an Adventurer, but more like a young instructor from an academy.
"Not too bad," Zelir said with a small smile, adjusting his collar.
He bought the outfit for five silver coins, leaving him with a total of three gold coins and fifty-three silver coins.
Next, Zelir asked for directions and, after a few twists and turns, finally arrived at his destination.
Compared to the Adventurer’s Association, the Mage’s Guild was undoubtedly far more luxurious and grand.
It wasn’t a single building but a large compound of several buildings, enclosed by a surrounding wall. The entrance was a large, white stone archway.
Even the guards standing post under the archway had a better bearing and equipment than the ones at the Black Stone Town gate.
Zelir took a deep breath and walked forward.
"Halt."
The guard raised a hand. "Show me your identification."
Zelir took out his Adventurer’s Badge as usual.
The guard took it and looked it over, his voice tinged with confusion. "Don’t you have a badge issued by the Mage’s Guild?"
"This is my first time at the Mage’s Guild. I’m here today to get my Mage rating," Zelir said.
"Please wait a moment."
The guard turned and rummaged around in a room beside the archway for a moment before coming out with a small Crystal Ball.
As the guard instructed, Zelir placed his palm on the Crystal Ball.
He channeled a little Magic Power, and a light began to glow from within the Crystal Ball’s slightly cloudy interior.
’Looks like a little gadget for detecting Magic Power...’ Zelir surmised.
"Alright, you may enter."
The guard stepped aside and pointed Zelir in a direction. "The General Affairs Office, which handles Mage Level assessments, is over there."
"Thank you," Zelir said with a nod.
The Mage’s Guild was somewhat deserted inside. Zelir looked around and saw only a few people passing by sporadically. This was actually normal; compared to other Professionals, Mages were few in number.
If Black Stone Town didn’t possess the two major resources of the Black Stone Vein and the Gray Wood Forest, the Mage’s Guild would never have established a branch here. Usually, only city-level settlements had that privilege.
After crossing a lawn, Zelir arrived at the General Affairs Office the guard had pointed out.
Inside was a spacious, brightly lit hall filled with the pleasant smell of old books.
An Elder Mage with a long, white beard was handling reception, slumped over the counter and dozing off.
"Hello."
Zelir gently woke him. "I’d like to undergo a Mage rating."
The Elder Mage didn’t even lift an eyelid, simply pointing to a long bench off to the side. "Go over there and wait."
Zelir followed his gesture and saw that a girl was already sitting there.
She looked to be about the same age as Zelir, dressed in a well-tailored, Light Purple Magic Robe. A cascade of beautiful, long, curly golden hair fell down her back, and a delicate, Deep Red Magic Wand hung at her waist.
The girl seemed to notice the movement. She tilted her head slightly, her gaze meeting Zelir’s.
’Her eyes are sapphire blue... quite pretty.’
That was Zelir’s first impression.
Zelir gave the girl a polite nod and then sat down a few empty seats away from her.
Perhaps because the wait was a bit boring, the girl took the initiative to speak.
"Hey, are you also here for the rating?"
"Yes," Zelir nodded.
"My name is Bev Alberti. And you?" Bev introduced herself with an easy grace.
"Zelir."
"Zelir..."
Bev mulled over the name, her tone probing. "No surname... so you’re not the son of some noble family?"
"That’s right. I’m just a commoner."
Zelir chuckled softly. "I’m self-taught in Magic, so I thought I’d come and get a rating."
