An Ning dialed Director Hu’s number.

The person who answered was a familiar voice—Wang. He didn’t waste a moment, transferring her to Director Hu’s office.

An Ning asked about getting electricity.

"An Ning, don’t worry. About the electricity—while it’s true I pulled some strings for you, it’s not exactly special treatment."

"Don’t feel burdened by it. Our country is electrifying the entire nation step by step. It was bound to reach your village sooner or later."

Director Hu wasn’t taking credit; instead, he was reassuring An Ning.

An Ning simply said a modest "thank you," and they both hung up.

She pressed down the switch hook on the phone’s cradle with one finger, and a dial tone buzzed from the receiver.

’If I’d known I could make a trade for electricity, I would’ve done it a long time ago.’

An Ning felt there was nothing wrong with trading the fruits of her labor, or her intellect, for something she needed.

She put down the phone, said goodbye to Auntie An Qi at the door, and headed home.

As for getting the electricity hooked up, Sun Dazhuang would be following up on it.

Getting electricity was a simple affair back then. It just took a few wooden utility poles and a wire run to each household, and that was pretty much it.

At that time, besides light bulbs, the village had almost no household appliances.

An Ning walked home alone from the brigade office.

An Ning was drying her hair but didn’t dare leave the room. Lin Cuihua herded her over to sit on the kang.

Lin Cuihua fussed over her, making An Ning change into a fresh set of clothes.

An Ning was happy to change. Her old clothes had a certain smell.

"They did, but I just love your cooking, Mom."

Far, far away, An Guoming let out a huge sneeze for no reason at all.

After returning, An Ning resumed her usual schedule of teaching classes.

The village had been bustling with activity for the past few days. Director Zhao must have held a very high position, because Sun Dazhuang received a call in the morning, and by the afternoon, an inspection team had arrived.

They didn’t just inspect; they also drew circles on the ground. Each circle marked a spot where a hole needed to be dug for a utility pole.

For a job like that, Sun Dazhuang didn’t need to wait for an official work crew. He gathered the men of the village, and they had all the holes dug in less than half a day.

The next day, a large truck drove into Shili Gou, and a full load of utility poles was unloaded.

The children cheered. They didn’t really understand what electricity was, but they were overjoyed all the same.

"We’re getting electricity!"

"We’re getting power!"
